Zion Train Lodge

Go there

After a disappointing stay nearby I took a trip with my son to Zion Lodge. Immediately felt the Love. Humble, informative and very helpful owners. Ate with us, talked to us and put us in the safe, right direction of where we needed to go. Chilled relaxing time. Not overbearing hosts. Despite the obvious lack of tourism, we never felt hurried, pushed or pressured to 'spend'. My ten year old boy described them as very kind, nice people. He felt totally at home. If there were more people and places like this, traveling would be paradise. I was impressed that as soon as I phoned, I was given an accurate, honest description of the accomodation which for tbe price was totally adequate. There is a warmth there. They genuinely seem pleased to have you. From the home grown fruits, jams, mayonaise to the vividly decorated compound the Rasta vibe comes through again and again. A great place to stay and chill or use as base camp for exploring.

good hotel for a good price, most rooms are renovated. Fish fried is very nice to eat and good makato. good service in an nice old style. Best value in Ziway. Good beds, hot water. Bekele Molla offers still all over Ethiopia decent bedrooms for a very reasonable price. It stays out the group of all these overpriced new hotels with often a bad service.

not so bad for that price

Old and clean rooms in the only garden in Shashemene. Take rooms on the right or middle side, the left ones get the noise of the lateral street through your bathroom, not closing window. The price is very low, and that makes it a good place. For food , just go on the other side of the road.

If you are travelling from the capital, you already know it is a long long trip and when you get to the hotel you just want to put your bags down, take a shower and relax. With that being said... We reached the Haile Resort and was met by unwelcoming receptionists, we told them we have a reservation and they straight away asked us for payment. I asked if we could pay when we check out to which they agreed. We asked a few questions like what’s in the area, local buses, taxi fares to the nearest attractions etc and they just said they didn’t know. We booked a large twin room and when we got in, it was a single standard room. It smelt damp and needed airing out. We went back downstairs to the reception and asked the receptionist about the room size, he said no large rooms were available until tomorrow and we could change tomorrow night but we booked only two days and explained this, he just looked at us blankly. There were no facilities as displayed on the booking page so we did not have tea, kettle, iron and literally had to beg for toilet paper which they gave us half a roll from the front desk. There was no air con/heating available so the room was very hot when the sun was out, and very cold and drafty in the night. The sheets were crumpled and discoloured like they had been used for years. The septic tank was right over your head above the toilet, hanging off hinges and was leaking, it also heavily smelt of sewer if the toilet was left open. No tea/coffee available before the kitchen opened. So you had to wait for breakfast or have tea before the restaurant closed. We planned to take the bus back to the capital at 6am so wanted to clear our bill for the hotel the evening before. From 10pm it took 2 HOURS for them to create a statement, pay and give us an invoice as the receptionists did not know how to clear the bill without checking the guest out, could not take card payments, sent us out at midnight in the town to find an atm then didn’t have any money in the entire hotel to give us our change when we paid - the change was 104 birr. They told us to come back in the morning multiple times but we explained that we want to leave early and wanted to avoid delay. If we wasn’t persistent we would still be there now arguing. Awful awful experience. Side note: The young men who were waiters, were exceptional and I wish I could give them a separate rating and review. The food was lovely each and every time and the waiters took it upon themselves to make my partner a birthday fruit platter when I told them we were celebrating his birthday so thank you guys for making the stay at least bearable.
