The 10 best Villas in Tasmania, Australia

May 1, 2023 Enriqueta Cusson

Off Australia’s South Coast you’ll find the rugged and beautiful island of Tasmania — a unique destination where you can see Tasmanian devils, walk in the wilderness, take in stunning eco-cruises, taste artisanal cheeses and even explore a controversial art museum. The best way to see it? Take the back roads, but allow plenty of time: A short drive in any direction can lead to wineries, distilleries, marine farms, convict settlements, pristine beaches, fields of lavender and national parks…

Loved our stay. I think this place has the most info I've ever seen. Any questions you might have are all covered in the information brochure. The breakfast basket was amazing and so plentiful and the free washer and dryer just a welcome bonus. It's old creaky and quirky and we loved it.

Devils Gap Retreat

Great place to retreat, relax and take in the awesome views and local wildlife.

Reviewed By wareinbelgium

As mentioned previously by others, there are two cottages at "Devils Gap Retreat", this review is for the "The Gap" where we had booked seven nights accommodation. While the two cottages are reasonably close together you cannot see the other cottage and both are private and remote. In fact if you didn't know the other cottage was there you would not have even known it existed. The previous reviews have painted a good picture of what the cottages are like. As I found it wasn't always clear from some of the reviews and the owners website which cottage was being reviewed or pictured I wanted to inform others of what to expect at "The Gap" only. My wife and I were met at the airport by Caroline and after picking up our hire car we followed her to the Gap where she gave us the rundown of the cottage and what to expect on KI. From the beginning I was most impressed by the abundance of little 'extras' that you don't normally get in most SC cottages. On the kitchen bench was a fresh loaf of bread from the bakery, in the fridge was bowl of fresh eggs, a slab of butter, tray of jam, a litre of milk plus a bowl of fruit. This was a nice touch but better still the cupboards contained a box of cereal plus a number of packets of Wheetbix, which could also be fed to the wallabies (see below). Additionally the kitchen cupboards contained plenty of the useful items not normally available, such as cooking and olive oil, glad wrap, aluminium foil etc. There was also a large supply of dishwashing liquid and other essential items to wash up with. An abundance of spices were available plus salt and pepper grinders. To drink there were a large variety of good quality tea (black and herbal), instant coffee plus a packet of pre-ground coffee for the coffee plunger. Plenty of pots & pans, plates, cutlery etc. The Gap cottage overlooks the west coast of the island with uninterrupted views of the coast and scrub. As Caroline pointed out, there is nothing between us and South America. On a couple of days the roaring 40s kicked in and the temperature dropped dramatically. For me this was a plus and was just the experience we were hoping for. It was great looking out over the windswept coast with the rain lashing the windows. We even lit the fire a couple of nights and the place was well stocked with firewood. The cottage comes with a large array of books and reading materials of all sorts. This includes novels, art books, history books and information on KI. There is a small TV and a number of DVDs to choose from. The bathroom had plenty of towels, soap toilet paper to use. The bedroom was spacious and had heaps of pillows, blankets and doonas to keep you warm. The bathroom has uninterrupted (meaning no curtains) views. This means there is nothing blocking the views in or out. A little hard to get used to at first but there really is nothing (or nobody) around so it didn't take long to get used to it. (Actually there were curtains on the main window that probably could be deployed but were tied up in a knot) Caroline did mention that a Wallaby might come around and we could feed her a dry Wheetbix if we wanted. Actually we had visits from wallabies every day we were there. Sometimes one or two and once there were 5 or six at one time. On the 3rd day we were there a mother with Joey came to visit which was really beautiful to see. She ended up coming back every day, mostly by herself but sometimes with another wallaby. They do like the Wheetbix! Overall the accommodation was sort of what we expected. I have added a few more pictures to help others get the feel for the place. The cottage is comfortable and nice but not luxurious. Some age is showing and a few things don't work properly but this doesn't necessarily detract from the experience but in keeping with the overall character of the cottage. Things Not Available. (Not necessary but just so you know) - No microwave dishes. No A/C. No washing machine. KI Tips & FYI 1. Hire Car - it's a must and there is only one hire car company on the island (KICR). We went with the cheaper option and the car was quite old but in good condition. I found KICR really easy to deal with and had no problems. 2. Mobile Phone coverage & WiFi. Only Telstra is available on K.I. The reception at the Gap is poor but passable. No WiFi is available. 3. Shopping. There are almost no retail shops on KI. There is a IGA which has a broad range of products on sale other than groceries as well as a Foodworks store. There is a bakery that serves great pies, a butcher shop next door and a chemist shop but not too much else. All shops close at 18:00. 4. Eateries. Not too many places to eat out on the island. We ate once at the Oleada restaurant in Currie which was great. There is another restaurant at Grassy which seems highly recommended but this is 30 plus minutes away from where we staying. Both restaurants are only open at nights and not every night so best check the times. We also had coffee and lunch at the Bakery and also at Cafe Brewer which is off the beaten track but well worth a visit. We also had a nice cheese platter and glass of wine at the KI dairy which is open every day but only offers the cheese platter and one other option. There are one or two other places to get a meal or you can eat at one of the clubs around the island as well. We didn't try these options. btw - Caroline also has a "Restaurant with no food" on the harbour but we didn't go there. 5. Sight Seeing & Attractions. Very limited options for sightseeing and attractions. This didn't worry us too much as the views and ambience at the Gap were the most impressive attraction. Having said that the museum was well worth a visit and included a tour of a building where they have restored the Cape Wickham lighthouse light. 6. Wildlife. There are a lot of wallabies on KI. Rarely would you not see one when driving, even when going down to Currie shops (5 min drive). Also in some places there are wild turkeys and chickens roaming about. You need to drive with some awareness especially as the roads are not too wide and windy. 7. Drinking water. It seems that the tank water at most places (including the Gap) is affected by salt and not recommended to drink unless you had boiled for 3 minutes. We purchased locally produced bottled water at the supermarkets to drink.

3.5 stars is not lucury

Reviewed By Willstars

Look this is perfectly ok as a 3.5star property, but it definitely should not be referred to as luxury. We took the top floor for 5 nights... 2 bedrooms w king beds - they were actually 2 king singles pushed together with single bed protector so you couldn’t sleep in the middle of the bed. No bed heads?! Main bedroom faces west- we arrived on a 31 degree day and the room was unbearably hot. No screens, no sheer curtains and no air con. Block out blinds- if up you got breeze, bugs and light. If down it was hot. Every night we had to spray for mosquitos. We opted to use the smaller second room because it was degrees cooler. Lounge is adequate and dining table shoved in the corner has to be pulled out if you want to use it. Bathroom is good and washer/dryer in a cupboard. Shower needs a good clean. Kitchen- pots and some utensils in terrible condition. Sugar jar (yuk) full of ants. Sink and floor need proper cleaning. Absolutely no housekeeping service. However: During our stay someone let themselves in to collect mail off the hall table- very odd. Great spot, close to everything.

Not Terrible but I wouldn't recommend it too my Friends

We stayed here because we met up with family and they have a unit that could fit 7. Never having been to Tasmania I didn't realise this place is located right on the main road north. I found it very noisy at night which made it impossible to get to sleep. The upstairs bathroom was OK but the toilet seat had a huge piece missing out of the side which was painful on your leg when sitting on it. One of the bedrooms upstairs didn't have a door. The room opened onto the lounge TV area so when the children went to bed it wasn't possible to have the living room light or TV on. We were woken in the night by the battery in one of the smoke alarms beeping. We had to take it out. This must have happened to someone else as the smoke alarm in the other upstairs bedroom was also dangling open with no battery in it. It was clean though. I would never come back sorry.

No wifi in villa

Reviewed By Desmond M

It is a pity that this issue is what drove me to write this review because the room is good, we have no issues other than the wifi issue. We had just checked in for 6 days yesterday and we noticed the network providing wifi does not reach our villa. When I asked about how we get wifi I was told to try connecting outside, which by the way also did not help. I was then told, it works in reception, which was no problem for me either, and because I suspect the hardware is in the main building where reception is. All I got was a sorry, and that no one ever had issues with wifi in the same Villa. Our Villa is one of the furtherest ones from the main building. Don’t expect wifi when you get here, because you may be disappointed. There is obviously an issue with the wifi but there is no level of awareness or acknowledgement of the problem. When I asked for another room that did get the wifi signal I was told they are fully booked, so money is clearly coming in but think twice before booking here if wifi is something that is important to you.
