The 10 best Lodges in Arizona, United States

April 18, 2023 Stefan Strunk

The state of Arizona is one that features a fantastic diversity of landscapes and areas of geological interest. North Arizona is famous for the Grand Canyon, a colorful chasm with steep rocky walls more than a mile deep and stretching some 277 miles alongside the Colorado River. Other notable destinations in North Arizona include Flagstaff set alongside the San Francisco Peaks which has the largest ponderosa pine forest, Museum of Northern Arizona, and is close to a number of national parks and monuments. On the south side of Arizona lies the city of Phoenix, the largest in Arizona. Notable day trips in Phoenix include the Heard Museum which is one of America's largest collections of Native American art, Phoenix Museum of History, as well as the Desert Botanical garden which has a great collection of desert plants.

Sky Ranch Lodge

Sky Ranch Lodge sits on the edge of Airport Mesa, 500 feet above town, peacefully removed from all the hustle and bustle below. Massive red rock views tower in every direction from the hotel and the mesa is ringed by an easy hiking trail that offers eagle-eye views of Sedona's most stunning rock formations. These are the best views in all of Red Rock Country. Sky Ranch Lodge is famous for its richly landscaped grounds, teeming with gardens, shade trees, and ponds - often referred to as an oasis in the sky as well as "Sedona's best kept secret."

Perfect location!

I researched almost every place to stay in Sedona. I found the best! Sky Ranch is a bit away from the crowds, way up on a hill next to the Airport vortex. (The “airport” is basically a landing strip for very small aircraft). We booked a Rim room, so worth it, facing the mountain and a patio to enjoy the view. The lodge is a quiet place, away from any commercial activity, very peaceful and meditative. The room is clean and very well appointed with coffee station, microwave, fridge, etc. Our first discovery : it’s the best place in Sedona to watch the sunset, truly! And a short ways to our first vortex/hike. There is a bar, but no restaurant. No problem, one of the best Sedona restaurants with fabulous views is a 5 minute walk away. They also have a pool, but being early March, we did not try it. The staff was very friendly and service was impeccable. We will definitely return and highly recommend this place if you are looking for something unique and lovely and quiet!

Yavapai Lodge

Aging lodge, but great location

Reviewed By marklV1786EW

This was our first stay in the park itself at the Grand Canyon. Previously had stayed 12 minutes south in Tusayan. All of the lodging in the area is overpriced, but in comparison the Yavapai Lodge was not unreasonable. Built in the late 1950s, the rooms are motel-like, and although may have been updated at some point, still feel "old". The staff (seemingly all international and young) were very friendly, and the lodge is very convenient to dining, the general store, and (most importantly) the shuttle system. We liked staying in the park, but may need to explore Bright Angel Lodge and the El Tovar Hotel before returning to Yavapai Lodge again.

Contemporary style blended with natural touches make Thunderbird Lodge an ideal accommodation choice at the south rim of the canyon. Family-focused, the lodge has ample amenities to make for a memorable stay in the heart of the Historic District. Many of the comfortable, modern rooms offer canyon views while others overlook Historic Village streets. Thunderbird Lodge is walking distance to restaurants, gift shops, Kolb Studio, Verkamp’s Visitor Center and Bright Angel Trail Head. Please Note: Guests staying at Thunderbird Lodge will need to check-in at the Bright Angel Lodge Front Desk. Situated directly on the canyon rim, many of the rooms at Thunderbird Lodge have partial canyon views available, called canyon-side rooms. The rooms have either one king bed or two queen beds. Guest room amenities include a full bath, in-room Keurig coffee maker, refrigerator, flat screen television with satellite TV, telephone, hair dryer, and safe.

Premium prices but not premium customer service!

First of all perfect location on the south rim, amazing views, decent rooms etc. BUT we were disappointed with our customer service experience! After a six hour journey and struggle to actually find the Lodge which we found was not well sign posted, then hassle with finding a spare parking space, we arrived at the Bright Angel Lodge to check-in, at a few minutes to 15:00 and were told by the person at reception that our room was not ready so I asked how long it would be, the response was that it should be ready within the hour but can take up until five o’clock. I replied that our booking confirmation stated check-in is at three o’clock …. the abrupt response back to me was “well this is NPS and that’s how we do it!” - I found this quite rude and unprofessional, however I decided to let this slip to avoid antagonising this person and risk even further delay. I provided my phone number and waited for the call - which thankfully came 30 minutes later. I’ve never been spoken to in this manor by hotel reception staff and suggest that customer facing staff are educated/trained in hospitality/customer service. Hospitality staff should not speak to customers this way, ever! Regarding this matter, if I am paying $363 for ONE night, not only do I object to this poor level of customer service I also expect my room to be ready at the stated check-in time or compensated accordingly! I am pretty sure if I stayed in the room for an extra 30 - 60 mins past checkout, I would be charged for it?? Double standards and It’s just not good enough. Things were no better at the Fred Harvey Tavern in the Bright Angel Lodge, we queued and requested a table for two and were advised there’s a wait time of 45 minutes. So we provided our phone number and walked straight into the bar for a drink whilst we waited. Only to be promptly ejected a couple of minutes later as the bar is also for restaurant service only, even though there were empty tables. What?…Seriously! No one bothered to mention this to us even though we’d literally just reserved a table. Only the 6 bar stools are for the open bar. When we got our text 50 minutes later we then had to queue up AGAIN for our table as there was only one person dealing with new customers and those of us who’d been allocated a table via text message - what a complete shambles!! Once seated the service and food was much better than I expected. Ironically we ended up sat in the bar from where we’d been asked to leave one hour earlier As a foreign traveller to the USA, I do not intend to stay at any hotel again that is operated by Xanterra/NPS and I do not recommend it - understaffed, completely overpriced due to having a monopoly (and no competition) and because of its proximity to the canyon, they charge premium rates because they can but in my opinion offer a below par customer experience! To me it appears that customer satisfaction is not very high on the list of this hotel and organisation. Dreadful attitude to customers!

Pleasantly surprised

Reviewed By himmelcat13

Upon arrival, I will admit I didn't expect much. When you have a hotel right on the rim of the grand canyon, you don't need much in order to attract patrons-they will come regardless. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the state of the hotel and rooms. The bathrooms had bottles of shampoo/conditioner/lotion/body wash, there was a coffee pot and television and fridge, and the beds were fairly comfortable. We did find out that we had a little lizard in our room that must've snuck in during a cleaning, but he didn't bother us and we didn't bother him. Keep in mind, though, while there is a fridge, there is no microwave. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with our stay here, especially considering the hotel could literally be a shack with a bed roll and it would still be booked up every night.

Stayed in Flagstaff for 2 nites with 9 year old daughter and we loved the new hotel. We’ve stayed at sister properties and were looking forward to this hotel opening. Still brand new so spa and sauna weren’t open yet but are on track to open soon. Beds were very comfortable, game room was fun and had a few board games (more needed), and the pizza was amazing!!!! Great decor everywhere, loved having a small refrigerator in the room and the staff was very helpful and engaging. Check out Walnut Canyon for the Cliff dwellings when you’re in the area. We will return to HCML.

Lees Ferry Lodge at Vermilion Cliffs

Small, rustic lodge at the base of the breathtaking Vermilion Cliffs in Marble Canyon, AZ

Fantastic location near Lees Ferry

First, the customer service in advance of our stay was phenomenal. My husband prefers to speak to someone vs booking online, and the gal he spoke with was amazing. She worked with us when we had to make a last-minute change. It was like calling up an old friend. We stayed in "Room 11" which is actually a freestanding unit behind the main lodge. This room encompasses the majority area of a mobile home. It consists of 2 rooms, 4 beds, 1 bath. You park next to the home and walk around back to enter. The entire back area is yours. It's a fantastic spot with stellar views! A gas grill is on-site and ready to go. There is a picnic table and gas fire pit. The restaurant was under construction during our stay, so we packed a cooler and grilled dinner. There are steps leading up to the front door. You enter into the first of 2 bedrooms. This room has 2 full-sized beds. There is a small hallway separating this space from the 2nd bedroom. That room has 2 twin beds and a door to close it off from the rest of the areas. The hall has a dresser perfectly placed to use as a flat surface. It was great for prepping lunches to pack on our day trip. The bathroom is well-sized and has a tub/shower combo. The water pressure is not powerful enough to rinse out long hair without some effort, but it isn't surprising or unexpected for a place literally in the middle of nowhere. The water was warm and refreshing and that was great for us. The place was immaculate! So very clean! The beds were very comfortable and even smelled clean. I was super impressed! It felt cleaner than the Hampton we stayed at the night before. (Is it obvious that cleanliness is a dealbreaker for me?) There is a mini-fridge, coffee maker (with supplies), and microwave in the room with the full beds. We especially appreciated the extra touches. Toiletries in the bathroom, a box fan in the closet, fantastic pillows (3 on each of the full beds and 2 each on the twins). It really was a nice surprise. Each room had an air conditioning unit, plus a third unit in the hall. The a/c in the kids' room froze up in the late evening before we went to bed, but the air outside was crazy humid and not unexpected. We knew we could call for assistance, but we just shut it down and the air in the other two rooms was plenty to keep it comfortably cool all night long. The kids said they woke up cold. This is a quaint little establishment. It's not glam but has an adorable rustic charm. The kids had great cell reception, but hubby and I didn't even check. We enjoyed the time away. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Very Bad experience

Reviewed By BrynS

For a cost of $220 usd/night I expected a very good, comfortable room. Only stayed here because after driving 9 hrs couldn't find anything else. The website made it look like a semi luxury golf resort. What I received was appalling. Absolute rip off. The room was musty smelling , never been updated in 30 years. Had an antique tube TV that was so fuzzy it was unwatchable, leaking taps, then to cap it all off shouting and arguments in the hallway, around 6am. Will never return and advise other to follow suit.

The worst stay I've had in years. NEAR TRAIN TRACKS THAT RUN ALL DAY AND NIGHT

Reviewed By M5379VNjohnb

We booked this place online and its not like the pictures. There is NOTHING good about this place. $140 a night, over priced dump. Trains, trains, trains, LOUD. LOUD neighbors and can hear their heater run off and on all night. TV signal fades in and out. Heater is louder than the tv, and it runs for 10 mins off and on. Very annoying. Sheets did not fit the bed and were falling off all night and dirty. Holes in the curtains and no soap in the dispensers. Towels were spotted and dirty. Front door does not seal, so cold air blows in all night
