Casa Degraciela - Boutique Hotel

n 1920 , Doña Graciela Jimenez, spoused to Don Alfonso Cornejo Guerrero, lived in this house built in the late nineteenth century. Despite being a married couple, they both used to live in different houses as an unusual way of being married. Don Alfonso was a man who was strictly commited to agriculture, especially, the coffee business and he prefered to keep his ‘workspace’ in another house across the park, the house where he lived in. Doña Graciela was fully commited to the house chores and she prefered not to get involved with her husband’s work affairs. People who have worked for both of them, say that every single day Don Alfonso would come to visit her for lunch, in the afternoon they both would have a cup of coffee and arroz con leche (Don Alfonso’s favorite dessert), and when the sun came down he would have dinner with her, it was a ritual: Playing boleros, having a glass of brandy and smoking an Habano. Doña Graciela’s house suffered two important transformations: In 1962, after her death, the house walls were enhanced in order to strenght the house’s structure; and in 2001, after an 7.8 earthquake hit El Salvador, the whole infrastructure was reinforced but always keeping the colonial style that always characterized the house. Currently the house is owned by Doña Graciela’s grandson and great-grandson and over the years, this house has been used as a rest home. During the past 15 years, the house has always been an attraction to both national and international tourists who would ask to go inside the house just to take pictures. Nowdays, Casa Degraciela opens the doors as a Boutique Bed & Breakfast to receive anyone who appreciates an environment of elegance and good taste, privacy and of course, an outstanding quality of service. Casa Degraciela is now 150 years old. The house’s antiqueness, its architectural beauty, the comfort of its facilities, the quietness (despite being located in the middle of the city) and the nearness of the best bars and restaurants in town… makes of you stay an unforgettable experience. Each room is differently decorated with antique furniture used by all our ancestors. Even if you’re staying in a 150 years old house, the experience suits to the highest standards of comfort and quality of modern hotels nowdays.

Nice hotel but small

Reviewed By Javier C

We had to stay at Ataco for one night and tried this hotel. Doesn't have many amenities. 12 rooms but most of them small and not well taken care of. Poor decoration and rare smell inside like humid. However plants give the place a nice look. Fair enough for a one night stay.

Capricho Beach House

Capricho Beach House is a small hotel situated at the beach front of the peninsula Barra de Santiago. This cozy and relaxed place is made in ecological style with palm thatched roofs, rustic motifs, wooden beams and the four rooms share a cool corridor overlooking the beach. The spectacular natural surroundings frame this property with the long stretched sandy beach in front and the still waters of the estuary (lagoon) at the back side. The area is dotted with coconut palms and is frequented by different birds such as humming birds visiting the flowers in the garden. The rooms all have A/C and private bath. There is a lounge area for sun bathing, small palm thatched ranchos at the beach front, a living room and restaurant area. Our hotel offer a restaurant service from 6am to 9pm but if you want to visit other places, the village (3kms away) and the Bocana (1 kms away) are other options for meals. This is the perfect place for nature lovers as the location is conducive to enjoy the amazing wildlife in this protected natural area. Tours into the mangroves to observe birds, reptiles, crocodiles, mammals and the local fishing community´s way of life tops the list along with surf activities, observing the great ocean turtles and other ecological conservation programs. Services available are : board rental, surf classes, boat trips into the estuary or mangroves, fishing trips, night walks to observe turtle lay eggs on the beach and turtle baby release tours. Beach front eco friendly property

We found this as a last minute destination, the host was very nice and provided excellent directions and instructions on how to get there and set the right expectations from the beginning, such as no TV.... It is a bit remote but a great experience. We were a family of 3, and were able to book a room for $100 with A/C, which is a plus given that this time of year is very hot in El Salvador. Service was great, everything was super clean. There are a few areas of opportunity: (not a game charger I'd totally go again) - Kids playground - Food menu could have more options - Parking access for non 4x4 vehicles - Mosquito lamps outside the rooms - Taller tables, inside the rooms, to be able to reach the outlets and charge our devices Lena, the owner, was there and personally asked how our experience had been and she was open to feedback. I have no complaints at all, and if you are looking forward to unplugging yourself from the daily basis, this is for you. We didn't use WIFI but cellphones data worked perfectly fine. Even though is remote, signal is excellent.

We stayed in a single room that was quite spacious. The shower had genuinely hot water. The views are absolutely awesome and the staff are very friendly. Prepare to speak Spanish, you’re off the Gringo Trail here. Really enjoyed the hotel. It is a little noisy and it’s not super luxurious but the WiFi works great and the fresh air and panoramic views of the town are great. Would recommend.

Great place to stay, friendly staff and delicious Coffee

Reviewed By Gary H

Wonderful location in Ataco. Staff here are very friendly and make a great effort to provide top service but its for sure warm and genuine. The coffee here is delicous. Love the rooftop porch, great views of Ataco, perfect for breakfast in the mornings, coffee in the afternoon, and a beer or cocktail in the evenings. Owner Julio can also help arrange tours to see local culture/ food/ coffee plantations and shops. Rooms are comfortable but basic. Hot water is a bit of a challenge, would recommend trying for later afternoon showers for best hot water, definitely try and avoid mornings. Free and decent wifi available as well.

Spring Break at La Cocotera

Reviewed By A6731XHjohna

Where to begin. We were recommended this resort by a co-worker here in the states who grew up in El Salvador. You know its a good sign when the Immigration and Naturalization officer notices your "Destination of Travel" is La Cocotera and tells you "You will not be disappointed". From arrival to departure we were graciously waited on. The staff worked hard to accommodate every desire. My Spanish to English translation is a work in progress but, everyone was agreeable to use translation apps for perfect communication. Diego and his staff genuinely wanted to appreciate us as guests while also allowing us to appreciate their culture and country. The grounds were impeccable. The owner and staff have gone to great lengths to present a "Bali" style resort. The head gardener works diligently to perfect the flowers, plants, and trees on the resort. Rooms, ours was #5, were steps from the Pacific beach. The high bamboo ceilings, white washed walls, pebble showers, and windows galore made a perfect setting to wake up to a view of the ocean. Both pools were fantastic. Although, we mainly spent time at the beach front infinity pool for the beautiful views and constant cooling breeze. The pool side bar was perfect, timely, and served refreshing fresh fruit all day. The beach is about 200 feet of soft coffee colored sand. The staff is more than happy to set up a beach chair and umbrella if you like. Please take the short 1 mile walk down the beach to the end for great sunsets and sea shell hunting. We never felt unsafe exploring on our own. The food was our favorite experience. They employ an El Salvadorian born Michelin 3* chef on site. He provided us with Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner. All 3 meals served with attention to presentation, quality, and most importantly local flavors and foods. Additionally, all meals could be served on our rooms patio, pool side, traditional dining area, or even beach side with a fire. Please take advantage of the mangrove sightseeing boat ride, massage, and multitude of "off-site" tours. Our favorite was Santa Anna Volcano and a tour of a coffee plantation. One thing I will tell you is the ride from the airport is about 2.5 hours. Please do not let that deter you. Our driver educated us on his country and even stopped to share Papussas (El Salvador's national dish) with us from a roadside stand on the way to the resort. Also, note you can ask to take the scenic "beach road" if you prefer that to the expressway. Having stayed at both small and large scale resorts in Mexico and most of Central America, La Cocotera was uniquely different and delightful. We will most definitely be coming back.

Lovely courtyard and Comfortable Rooms

Reviewed By soulrebel23

Fabulous spot near the entrance to town. We had rooms 3 and 4. Room 3 was on road with two double beds and a kitchenette area and the bathroom at the back entrance to the courtyard. Room 4 is in the back and off the road-it was a gem with a larger kitchenette, couch and table area with large wooden dominos and lovely art work. Nice court yard. No A/C but it was cool the night we stayed there.
