The 10 best Hostels hotel in Porto, Portugal

April 28, 2023 Franklyn Hardiman

The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon. Sometimes called Oporto, it's an age-old city that has one foot firmly in the industrial present. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 14th-century São Francisco church is a main attraction, as are the local port wine cellars, mostly located across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia.

Bedbugs - AVOID!

Reviewed By GalwayLad123

Stayed in Oct 2021. During our stay, we got bedbug bites. At first we put it down to possible mosquito bites (unlikely in October) however most of our time in Porto we were wearing long pants / jackets so no skin exposure. After check-out we visited a Doctor whom confirmed bedbug bites. What was really disappointing is that before our check-in, we e-mailed a few questions to the hostel and they replied within hours. Yet, 3 e-mails later regarding the bedbug issue and total silence.... shows the place for what it is. It's a pitty as the staff we met were very friendly, however the management is clearly letting this place down. I hate putting business down, but I strongly recommend staying somewhere else.

Definitely not for 'mature' vacationers!

Reviewed By lauraeV7858JL

If you value peace & quiet and privacy, this is not the place for you. The floor-to-ceiling windowed rooms, around the open air common area, are like a fish bowl. Anyone can look into your room while you're out as the curtain doesn't cover the door way. DJ sets, rubbish live music, and loud remote workers/drunk guests in the common areas made it impossible to relax or sleep. Plus, the room I booked online was no longer available when we arrived (for reasons that didn't make sense). My bad for not realizing that Selina hotels are really for Gen Z kids living their best lives, and not Gen X folks who work their tails off to afford a few days away from the daily grind.

Trendy cozy place whit the nicest staff

Reviewed By marielouiselyster

Supernova is an amazing trendy but still cozy place. The people working there are incredibly kind and helpful. Nice common room where you really want to hang around. Spacey, fun decor. Well equipped kitchen, so you easily could cook your own dinner. We ordered food at Supernovas little café, which offers good low key food. There is a nice back yard with a terrace - we stayed there in late October, but I imagine that in summer, the terrace must be buzzing. Absolutely loved staying at Supernova!

My partner and I want to give a shoutout to Pedro, one of the staff members here. He provided us with amazing service, responding to multiple emails prior to our visit as we tried to coordinate receiving tickets for a soccer match in the mail. When we arrived, he gave us excellent recommendations on foods and drinks to try while in Porto and suggestions for how best to get around the city. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay in Porto. The private suite we stayed in was very clean and spacious and conveniently located for many different activities. We would definitely stay here again!

Nice Space, Poor Hospitality

Central location, clean room and bathroom. Was questioned about my age by front desk staff. Told me that although I was over the 36 (?) year old age limit to stay there, it would be ok because I "look young." Ew.
