Chateau Le Prieure

A Life Saver

Reviewed By Wineaway

We had pre booked a room at Domaine de Joureau arriving to find that the stairs up to the room were so steep they were dangerous, we were left with a dilemma of where else to stay. Chateau Le Prieure to the rescue! The hotel is wonderfully placed, a super view over the Loire river, in it’s own grounds with plenty of parking. The rooms are spacious, well appointed and our bathroom had a great bath! The staff were wonderful and extremely helpful, the breakfast buffet was first class - all homemade as one of the receptionists said. We will certainly return.

Manoir de Ponsay

Lovely old property in an excellent location for exploring the vendee

Reviewed By The-Hills-onthe-hill

Manoir de Ponsay is a delightful find. A mini chateau nestled amongst sunflower fields and paddocks of Charolais cattle. We found the owners to be the perfect hosts, offering a genuine welcome with help and advice on days out and local restaurants. We flew to La Rochelle airport and the Manoir is approximatly an hour away by car, near to Chantonnay. The owners had sent directions through by email, which should be followed as it isn't very easy to find. We seemed to take a different route back to the Manoir every day, but always found it! Three of us stayed in a family room which had a very comfortable double bed and small sofa bed in one room, a small single bed next door on the way to the bathroom. The second room was small with no storage space, but it was fine for our teenage son - who lived out of his cabin bag for our 5 night stay. The main double room had a lovely window, in the round tower, with fabulous views. There was a TV, blue tooth speaker and wifi - we didn't really spend much time in the room. The room was spacious and clean, it did smell a little bit musty - but then again it is very old so what should I expect. It didn't worry me apart from when we initially arrived. The bathroom was clean, and well equipped and the shower was amazing. Our towels were regularly changed and robes were provided for accessing the pool across the courtyard. The pool area is lovely and peaceful, and there is a toilet nearby and a hot tub (which we didn't use as it was very hot when we stayed). The breakfast was excellent, with plenty of options including home made cakes which are delicious. We stayed for dinner one evening, and although there were not choices, the meal cooked using local produce was superb. My son and husband enjoyed playing pool in the evening, there is a massive chess set too and lots of games on offer. There is a table tennis table outside under an open barn, Sadly, we didn't get chance to challenge the owner, Laurent, as he says no-one has beaten him! There is also a lovely hammock in the garden, to enjoy the marvellous views. I was a little worried about staying in one place for our 5 nights in France, but it is actually very central within the vendee region with loads of things to do. We went to Puy du Fou for one day and evening, went to the beach at Tranche sur mer, took a couple of walks; to a local castle and also a walk along the river at Saint Laurent Sur Sevre, and took a barque trip at the Marais du Poitivan, all of which we enjoyed. Had we not had advive from Laurent and Aurielle regarding restaurants, we might have struggled to find places to eat, but their recommendations were perfect. Laurent is very proud of his ancestral home, and it is interesting to see the family paintings, photographs and memorabilia on display. Aurielle is a jovial and welcoming hostess, who is a superb cook. In summary the Manoir du Ponsay is a lovely quiet and beautiful place, with superb hosts who also speak English. What a treat.

Chateau de Vauloge

In a romantic and enchanting setting, the chateau rises - surrounded by wide moats where wild ducks, herons and swans are masters. Built in the 15th century and protected by crenulated walls and a prison, the castle with its towers and its turrets was extended in the 19th century in neo-gothic style. The charm and refinement of its living rooms and 5 bedrooms delight guests who seek peace and serenity. Be charmed by the romantic countryside and the peaceful walks by the water or in the park. We are pleased to welcome you in our deluxe b&b for your stays, receptions and corporate functions.

A lovely place to travel through time. One night in the Castle feels like one life during France Second Empire. You won't meet with Napoleon III but you will certainly meet with history! There is plenty to visit in the propriety and the owners are always happy to share secrets kept by the castle's walls. This old building is the perfect place for a weekend gateway. Mixed experience

I spent one night there with my husband. The host is an old Dutch lady. She is very nice, generous and has a good sense of humor. I liked the old charming house surrounded by the huge park. I also liked the heated swimming pool. The room was very big but the floors creaked, making a lot of noise. I could hear every step the guy upstairs was taken. And for some unknown reason, he could not stay still. The bathroom is one of the biggest I’ve seen. I’ve had 4 star hotel rooms in Paris smaller than that bathroom! One should know there is no air conditioner and in summer it can get very hot! Should you decide to open the window, you will have many unwanted guests biting you and buzzing around your ears. Breakfast was tasty and varied. The WiFi was weak. There is a restaurant on site serving tasty and well presented food.

Manoir du Bois Noblet

South of the river loire, between saumur and angers, the manoir du bois noblet is a stately manor house dating from the 16th century, standing on the outskirts of the village of louerre, in its 42-acre grounds flanked by a national forest. Boasting three large bedroom, a family cottage, monumental fireplaces and a friendly lounge, it will allow you to enjoy the gentle angevine way of life.

Superb hosts, restaurant standard dinner, very reasonable rates

stayed for one night only on way to holiday in the Loire, and would highly recommend the Bois Noblet. Superb hosts who went out of their way to make sure you had everything you needed. Special mmention must be made about the evening meal - it was perfectly cooked & to restaurant standard. Lovely breakfast too. Owners speak good English, but you can practice French with them over aperitifs before dinner. The hosts also gave us very good recommendations on restaurants & on Loire wines, for our holiday. Definitely recommend.

Grand manor house in need of a little TLC.

Domaine De La Gressiere looks very grand. The reception area, restaurant, main staircase and pool are also in keeping with this impression. Our room was comfortable, there was a bath in the bathroom which is a bonus and the toiletries smelt wonderful. We were directed to our room via a gloomy back staircase then along a very narrow, dark corridor. The room was just a bit tired with the wallpaper starting to peel in places; nothing too bad but not as we imagined. The restaurant was not open as on Thursdays they have 'After the Beach' parties which are open to the public. There was a DJ and a barbecue with oysters and cheese available. It would have been nice to have known this although, that being said, the food was very good and we enjoyed 'people watching' as there was a clear distinction between the mostly bemused looking guests and the youngsters who had come for the party!

Traditional stay in a family chateau experience, well placed for Puy du Fou

Reviewed By NickSaul

The real deal of an historic chateau offering rooms and meals with your hosts. The chateau really benefits from being run by serious hospitality professionals Muriel and Pascal as a bolt hole from industry careers in Paris. This ensures good food and wine along with well equipped and decorated rooms, so well decorated it was perhaps hard to find places to put out our own stuff. A memorable and relaxing place to stay, in our case for a visit to the nearby Puy du Fou.

Really nice place for a family vacation in a very nice location

Reviewed By Paul B

We just spent a week with my family in a part of the castle. It was my second visit but the first time renting an aisle of the castle. It felt like home. The place is very big, well decorated and with all the necessary equipment. I really enjoyed the park, it's very green and quiet. The big plus are the pool and the tennis course.
