Le vagabond

Reviewed By Robert F

This restaurant serves crepes, both savoury and dessert. It is set on a picturesque Vendee road, a short walk from the quay of Le Meule on the Ile d'Yeu. Reservation for meal times is essential. The welcome is genuine, in spite of the numbers crowding in and the damp state of those who had been swimming. The menu is extensive. It took some time to translate the ingredients of each galette, and equally as long to make one's choice. The accompanying salads were crisp and fresh and natural. The galette comprised a square savoury crepe, filled with ground meat with supporting ingredients, and in most cases, a green salad. Vegetarians are catered for by the Chef's Salad and other concoctions. The galettes were delicious, and not too large to blunt the appetite for the sweet crepes that followed. The dessert crepes were mainly fruit based. The Martiniquaise came with a layer of split almonds and two scoops of creme fraiche. The two dishes averaged E17 per person, a reasonable cost for a filling meal. Service was prompt and pleasant, with grandchildren receiving patient care. Speaking of grandchildren, the toilet cubicles were meticulously clean despite the large numbers using them. Le Vagabond is a great place to savour local food after a morning exploring this area.

Le Malougo

Reviewed By Jimmysboy

With my wife and two friends we cycled around half the island, couldn't get a drink at one bar (serving meals) got a beer in a bar at St Sauveur, but by the time we got back to Port Joinville we were ready for a large plate of Moules Frites. That is what we found at Le Malougo on the north end of the Harbour front. One of the biggest bowls ever. Good service, good ambience and location. Modest bill. By the time we had finished we were ready to collect our bags from our hotel and laze in the pleasant sunshine overlooking the harbour till our ferry arrived. Well recommended restaurant.

Les Bafouettes

Reviewed By Eric_Beylon

We had lunch there in June 2011 during a stay in which we tried different restaurants in l'Ile d'Yeu. Les Bafouettes was by far the best one.First, this is not a tourist-focused restaurant: locals do eat there too. As the restaurant is not located on the harbour itself (but in a quiet and tiny street a few meters above), it is very quiet. No sea view but the dining room is well decorated and comfortable. A few guests can also eat on a small terrace opened on the street.Second, the chef uses locally produced fish, seafood, meat and vegetables. No industrial or canned/frozen inputs here but authentic food from the country (Challans duck, Atlantic lobster, etc.). Meals are very creative: in some of them the chef mixes a lot of flavours (may be too many sometimes?). We enjoyed the mushroom and snail pie (do not be afraid: there are more classic starter options such as the salmon and orange carpaccio), the berry sauced pigeon, the vanilla fish, and the fruity desserts.Third, all this is very reasonnably priced (we took the cheapest regular menu at 28€ ; there is a three-course lunch only menu at 16€ which seems good too -our neighbours took it so we had a glimpse on their plates!- but with more basic and classic items). Wines are rather cheap compared to similar quality restaurants, with a selection of local (Loire valley and Vendée) wineries which is a big plus too. Anyway, we prefered a nice Burgundy white wine and took a half bottle of Meursault for 30€. Wine is also sold by the glass which is a convenient option.Fourth, service is friendly, efficient, fast and smily. No 3 Michelin star luxury of course (and tables are rather close to each other), but more a family like service since the chef's'wife and son (the sommelier) work in the dining room. Reservation was friendly and easy too.We had a very good time there so I recommend eating here when visiting the Ile d'Yeu. So much more quality and authenticity than the tourist traps we also tried, especially on the harbour. We do not think the restaurant has a web site yet but you can walk by there during your stay and have a look at the detailed menus in the street (as everywhere in France) to know more about food and wine offered.

This is a great place to have lunch. It is not large and can get crowded, but tables can be reserved (0251587979). It is situated on the waterfront, opposite the market. You can dine in or take away. English is understood, and the menu is easy to follow. The salads are very good, and the pizza large enough to share. The staff suggested a green salad and a pizza shared between us, and brought us bread - not always a given. English tea is served, and small cups of traditional coffee, as well as the usual assortment of soft drinks. For a break from the heat and for a light lunch, the Mille Pates is our choice from the long line of eateries along the waterfront.

All four of us really enjoyed our dishes. All the fish was very fresh tasting. We had hake and sardines, though it was felt that the sardines and chips would have been enhanced with the addition of a salad. We would recommend the Tiramisu for dessert.

This brilliant restaurant is amazing. Take away to eat at home or somewhere else or sit in, but either way the food is cooked to perfection. Muscles and other sea food delecassies are on offer with super nice sugary or salty crepes. A friendly group of waiters and cooks make you feel relaxed and happy as ordering is easy and quick.
