North Carolina, United States Food Guide: 10 American food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Kernersville

July 9, 2020 Darwin Bolte

Find out what American restaurants to try in Kernersville. Kernersville is a town in Forsyth County, in the U.S. state of North Carolina. A small portion of the town is also in Guilford County. The population was 23,123 at the 2010 census, up from 17,126 at the 2000 census. Kernersville is located at the center of the Piedmont Triad metropolitan area, between Greensboro to the east, High Point to the south, and Winston-Salem to the west. Some of the rural farmland surrounding the town has been sold and turned into large middle-to-upper-class housing developments, and numerous large shopping centers have been built in the town over the past few years. Flue-cured tobacco was the major crop grown in the area and is still grown in some areas today. While Kernersville went through a growth spurt in the first decade of the 21st century, it has leveled off and farms are doing well for the most part in an attempt to revitalize the agricultural community.

Plaza Restaurant

We had not eaten here for awhile, so we decided to go to the Plaza Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant seems to cater to an older crowd. It is clean, quiet, and attractive. The booths are comfortable and roomy. My husband had sweet tea, and the Carolina Burger with french fries ($7.99) . The Carolina Burger comes with slaw and chili. He requested the slaw on the side and got a nice side dish portion of slaw. He enjoyed his burger and especially loved the french fries. I decided to go with water to drink and the 4 Vegetable Plate ($6.99). Today's vegetable choices were heavily weighed to starchy vegetables. The side items are very, very generous in portion size. I had the beet salad, hot chips with ranch dressing, potato salad, and stewed apples. I received a bread and butter plate piled high with hot chips and a vegetable side dish filled with ranch dip. The chips were perfectly cooked and not at all greasy. The other side items were served in vegetable side dishes filled up and piled high. The potato salad was tasty and I enjoyed it, but it lacked seasoning. The stewed apples were tasty but could have used a few dashes of cinnamon. The star of the Veggie Plate was the beet salad. I took my first bite and said Mmmmmm! These are sweet pickled beets with - I think - onions, sugar, vinegar, chopped parsley - and maybe another ingredient or so that I cannot determine - maybe orange juice. I also received a processed food style roll and a tub of margarine. They did warm the roll, which was a nice touch. Our server said the kitchen will not tell what's in the beet salad. I was very pleased with my meal. Our server was prompt and attentive. We will not wait so long before we dine here again! Maybe we will see you there!

Captain Tom's Seafood Restaurant

Take your appetite to Captain Tom's because you will get a HEAP of food, even if you order the small portion. We went for Sunday lunch and got 2-item combo plates. While I couldn't tell if I really got catfish or some other kind of fish, it was good. The popcorn shrimp were hot and good, and there were plenty of hushpuppies buried beneath everything else. My baked potato was large and good. Tea tasted fresh and not overly sweet. My lunch came with 2 sides -- one of which was unnecessary because of the sheer volume of food. I asked if the green beans had small pieces of onion mixed in, and my waitress said they didn't, so I asked for them. When I got them, I had to send them back because of ... onions. I wish she had known the menu a bit better than she did, but I didn't need those beans with everything else. Well, maybe I needed the beans and could have done without the other stuff! I thought my husband's side salad was small, but it came out first and looked fresh and nicely presented with 2 small cups of dressing and 4 cherry tomatoes. Prices were very fair for the portion sizes. Selection is good, and there are daily specials. I don't eat fried seafood often, but when I do, I will probably pick this place again.

We have been to Smitty’s many times and I usually don’t get past the oysters. This time I tried their crab stuffed Portabella mushroom; OMG it was delicious and it is huge! The portobello mushroom was stuffed with cream cheese, crab and seasonings then lightly breaded and fried topped with mozzarella and fresh tomatoes. It was served on top of their homemade marinara sauce which was superb. This dish can easily be shared. We had excellent service from Mike. They have a full bar and a good selection of beer.

Giadas Trattoria

Reviewed By John M

This is a clean and modern restaurant that easily accommodates larger groups, and the locals seem to enjoy it. Having just returned from a full month in Italy, the servings emphasize bulk quantity, and not special quality ingredients. I am not a small person, and I was hungry, but I only ate half of my smaller menu item dish. Non exceptional wines average about $30 a bottle, and the waitress just drops it on the table like it was a basket of bread, before walking away. Seemed pricey in a place where everything else was relatively cheap.

We visited the restaurant for breakfast this week. The food and service were perfect. The French toast features thick slices with powdered sugar. I had an egg and sausage plate with grits. Tasted creamy and were a great compliment to the plate. Hope to visit for lunch soon! Great prices too.

My husband and I were traveling to Raleigh, decided to stop for an early dinner and we’re so glad we did! The parking lot was packed. Little did we know, they have bluegrass live on Thursday!! BBQ and sides were great. You can choose from eastern style with vinegar base or Lexington, which is tomato based sauce. Lots of sides to choose from. Hush puppies were awesome!!! Thanks Prissy Polly’s

While passing thru Kernersville, 66 Grill and Taphouse was recommended to us as a good restaurant to try for a quick bite to eat. Having no experience with the food here, my wife and myself elected to get one of the lunch specials, the salad bar and a 8 inch two topping pizza. Were not disappointed, salad bar had a good selection and the pizza was surprisingly one of the best we have ever had. Namely the crust was perfect, good flavor, baked to a light crusty texture. We have plans to return and sample more from this restaurant

We always eat here with family when we visit them in Kernersville. Never disappointed. We love the lamb chop app. Prime Rib, Filet, and this time a rack of ribs which was excellent and recommended. Sides are always good including their stuffed tomatoes and asparagus. Desserts are no slouch either. This time Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Bundt Cake, and Carrot Cake! Great and reasonably priced wine selection especially their features. We love the place!
