I last visited two years ago with my daughter. Lunch today again with my wife and my daughter (a student who frequents this place often). They've added ramen to the menu since my last visit. Now normally a restaurant that doesn't specialize in ramen has a difficult time producing a good version. I chose the tonkatsu ramen and was blown away by the quality of the broth, the char siu pork, and the perfectly cooked noodles. My daughter enjoyed her chirashi (normal order) and my wife the business bento plate. This is a small restaurant with apparently quirky service. That said, our food and experience was great.

This popular little take out on Nassau Street is run by hard working humble people. They cook up an incredible beet bowl which I always order and according to my sushi-loving wife (I only eat cooked food) some of the best this side of Tokyo where she once lived for 2 years.

Nassau Sushi

I went there the other day with some friends, I have to say that it was my very first time in a Korean rest. I didn't enjoy the korean side dishes at all but may be it is me that I don't like Korean food. We also had the teriyaki beef and the okatsu, these two were alright, nice and tasty. Very filling bowls with meat vegetables and the rice. The price is average... between 15-18 dolars per person. The service was good and the place was clean.

Well, as a sushi buffet, it is edible. However, considering the price, you can find plenty of better options in New Jersey. The tempura dishes had very thick batter and very oily. The rice of the sushi rolls was soggy. The soups were very salty. White tuna sashimi was pretty good. I will not go back there anytime soon.

We wanted Japanese (sushi, noodles, and teriyaki), we debated between 2 options that had beat equal rating choosing Sakura Express as it was open at 5:30, a bit more reasonable, and had slightly more detailed reviews. So I had the salmon teriyaki combo plus some salmon sashimi just because it looked so fresh. Bottom line was I was thrilled, tender, well prepared, fresh, with every dollar spent. The staff was friendly, helpful, and accommodating. My friends had chicken teriyaki, shrimp teriyaki, and a noodle soup all enjoyed. All dishes came with salad and veggies. Again not a complaint. The Resturant is simple, more of a take out place which was ideal as it was a warm evening and we sat at a table in the square next door and had an amazing experience that was far beyond expectations. In short highly recommended.

The food is fine, but beware.... the soft drinks are billed by the glass. The dining room temperature was at least 80°, and at $3 for every iced tea refill, I could easily have started a Princeton University scholarship fund for the server. I was told the price per glass was because they made the iced tea inhouse. When I asked if soda was also billed by the glass, the answer was again yes. However they do not make their sodas in house.

Midori

This store front restaurant has well-spaced seating and is decorated with pretty, well-lit, wall-hung parasols and carved stone ornaments. My wife and I both ordered the Negimaki beef bento and were well satisfied with the taste. It consisted of six smallish beef rolls wrapped around delicious, soft, piquant scallions in a lick-the-plate sauce. The rice, California rolls and sugar snap pea pods that accompanied them were also excellent though a serving of edamame was uncooked and had tough leathery pods. The miso soup starter was delicate and filling but the somewhat odd tasting beaker of hot tea took some getting used to. At $30 for two the lunch was pricier than most and the portions were not large but I'd give this place another go.

The big deal about this small Japanese restaurant is that it's next door to the Princeton Record Exchange, one of the few remaining large record stores. The crabmeat sushi I had was fresh, although they were a little stingy with the crabmeat. Just this and a green tea set me back over USD20 including tips. I probably wouldn't fight to find my way back unless I was visiting the Princeton Record Exchange again.

Roots Cafe & Restaurant

My wife and I decided to have lunch at Roots on a Saturday afternoon. I regularly walk by Roots when picking up my dry cleaning in this strip mall. My only regret is that I waited so long to visit this restaurant! For lunch, orders are placed at the front counter where a menu board lists the items. Even though it was a warm day, I love soup and decided to try the Pho Chay. This vegetable pho was delicious and included a separate plate of all of the fresh items that are added to pho--jalapenos, basils, sprouts and chili sauce. This was a very good bowl of pho with a broth that was flavorful and served piping hot. I also had a side of the vegetable Thai spring rolls. They were also very good with accompanying sauces. These spring rolls are small and served in portions of 2 or 6. Though small, they had lots of flavor without being greasy. I ordered the fresh brewed iced tea to wash it all down and was impressed at how good the tea was. It was a nice blend of organic teas that was unsweetened which allowed for the flavors to really stand on their own. My wife also ordered the strawberry crepe, which looked delicious! This was my first visit to Roots, but will certainly not be my last!
