This is actually my favorite Tex-Mex in Ausitn. Gotta go to the Southpark Meadows location! If you love enchiladas - they have the best in town! And, they are the only place in Austin that knows how to make great spanish rice! It's firm and not just mush.Great fresh salsa too - with a great kick to it. We have also always had great service at this location. A friend of mine was visiting from Kansas City recently who has a severe wheat allergy. The manager came to our table to get details of exactly what she could not have, made the cook clean an area on the grill and made sure every item was safe for her to eat. She said everything was delicious & the best Mexican food she'd had in a long time.

Go-To for take-out morning tacos. Very large(even my 3 teenage human disposals only eat one), made to order and great fresh ingredients. Also, their salsas are the regulars but kicked up with heat. Do NOT, I repeat, Do NOT mix up the two green creamy looking ones! Both are perfect but the spicy one will make you cry! (However, in moderation, I LOVE and can't stop eating it!). Also, the ladies behind the counter are all so patient, friendly, and knowledgeable.

Not surprisingly (although I hadn't really known this until we moved to Austin), what's generally called Tex-Mex has a number of regional variants, each with a devoted clientele. El Paso style is one of those variants, and the Texican Cafe is a go-to place for getting to know those dishes. It turns out there really is a noticeable difference -- the main dishes (enchiladas, tamales, etc) are as one would expect, but the sauces and tastes are distinctive -- and very enjoyable.Madame and I drive past the Texican on South Manchac on a regular basis, as it's one of our two main routes into the center of Austin, and we'd often talked about stopping in. For some reason -- maybe because the restaurant is located along the side of a long building some distance back from the street, or maybe because the neighborhood looks more like a place to fill up your car and buy tires than one where you'd look for lunch -- it took us until today to take a look at the place, and to have what turned out to be a really delicious lunch. We both went for the Texican Dinner plate because of its variety -- a crispy taco, a tamale, an enchilada, beans, rice, queso, guacamole -- and thoroughly enjoyed the cooking. Sauces are indeed distinctive, with complex and surprising flavors. The queso and guac were terrific, and the margaritas that went by -- we just had iced tea and sparkling water on this occasion -- looked big enough to dive into, which on a clear, dry, and HOT Saturday afternoon seemed like a fine idea. Apparently -- your intrepid correspondent will check into this on a future visit, and return with a full report -- you can get your 'rita with a "floater", which refers to an extra layer of booze (what's not to like about that?) added on top. Our lunch platters were groaningly large (as as I, by the time we finished), as well as delicious, and so desserts will have to wait for a future visit too. Service was on the slow side, but we were competing with a group of thirty (!) in the next room on that particular day. Indoor seating is in a series of pleasant, dark and cool rooms; there is outdoor seating too on a covered patio. The parking lot is huge and unlikely ever to fill up. Credit cards are accepted, and I *think* -- not certain, here, as we just dropped in -- that reservations are accepted as well. There is a weekend brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, and lunch specials (available until 4PM!) on offer during the wek. We will definitely return to work our way through the large and diverse menu...Itinerant_scholar, thanks so very much for your honest and wonderful review. We are thrilled that you enjoyed it. We are hoping to see you again soon and that on your next visit that you will take pics cause we have a feeling that you apply the same level of detail. Thanks, please try the weekend brunch, especially the Puffy Breakfast Enchiladas.

Beginning a work trip by stopping at Valentina's given recommendations - was totally worth the 30-minutes waiting in line. The proprietors use Mesquite wood for BBQ, which burns hotter vs Oak offering a different but delicious taste. The brisket, barbacoa and carnitas tacos were simply amazing. Will come back!

Been here for breakfast tacos around 8 times. Usually call ahead and pick up. Tacos are good. Service always slow. Today I called ahead and arrived 30 minutes later to learn the order was there but never made it to the kitchen to cook. Told the tacos would be out soon. 30 minutes later no tacos. Told the owner to cancel. No apology from the owner about the service. Nothing.

We ate here for the first time and really enjoyed it. Some of the best Tex-Mex I've ever had, and I eat a lot of Tex-Mex. Service was excellent. Our waitress provided us with the appropriate amount of attention and made sure our drinks were filled. From the complimentary chips to the entree (Slick's Fajita's for two), there was such a good, fresh flavor. I couldn't believe it. Next time we are in town, we will definitely come back!
