As full time travelers we get around, moving every 3-6 months volunteering for the National Park System. If fried pickles are in the menu, I will order them. FATZ HAS THE BEST FRIED PICKLES I HAVE EVER HAD! Now that I have that out of the way I will go on to the rest of the meal: FATZ fried chicken....delicious! Baked potato swimming in butter and sour cream!:-). The fried shrimp and chicken strips as well as the Cole slaw rates a perfect 5...but the ribs only get a 4 because they were a little overdone on the outside. The waitress Susan is very experienced! The members of the team worked together to keep us happy. ! We will be back!

Pancake House

This is a down home local pancake place. Local flavor galore. Nothing fancy but that’s the way it’s intended. The food is good and at a reasonable price. The local specialty, livermush, is prevalent on the menu. Shelby has apparently declared livermush THE food of the gods and I think the locals agree. I’m vegetarian so I passed up that delicacy but the scrambled eggs, hash browns and pancake I had were quite nice.

Great "Asheville style" atmosphere. Deli sandwiches here are always amazing. I recommend the special no matter what it is. (look for what it is before you go, they normally post on facebook) It's all good. Great selection of Local and craft beer on tap and in bottles. Seems like we always end up taking some home. Truly one of my favorite places.

Joes Place

I struggled to rate Joe's. My meal was no better than a "2"...but the others in our group thought theirs was OK. So - I just couldn't bring myself to award a lower rating. But our experience suggests that ordering the right item makes all the difference in your appreciation of Joe's. The atmosphere of Joe's is that of a typical, small town, main street restaurant that does a decent business catering to out-of-town visitors. Nothing special but perfectly acceptable. The larger room to the right behind the bar looks like a better place to sit than in the main room. We sat in the main room.Joe's is a combo of pub food, Americana, and Thai. I know. It sounds a bit hard to pull off and their menu is super long for a small, not-so-busy restaurant. I always puzzle over how the kitchen can have available all the fresh ingredients necessary to whip-up 50 different meals on demand? I figure "fresh" is likely unrealistic in that case.So I ordered a hamburger. And it was below average. In fact, one of the worst I've had in a long time - fast food included. The burger was thin and oddly shaped. The bun was maybe a little mushy and the result was the whole sandwich sort of fell apart in my hands. It was peppery and was probably frozen 15 minutes before I ate it. I ate much of my burger with a fork and knife. Huh?Pet peeve - they use an off-brand ketchup that is runny and just not very good. The service was fine and I saw a very nice bar area with many drafts available. I stuck to a mid-day soft drink.So...my meal was a "2" but I'll give Joe's a "3". I suggest you very carefully consider what you're ordering. We do appreciate your having visited our restaurant, and are sorry that your experience was not like the loyal customers who have made Joe's Place a success for almost two decades now. As owner, I can assure you that our food is always prepared fresh to order, and with the finest of ingredients. I cannot speak to your particular order, but our burgers are very popular, so I am sorry that yours was not appealing to you. Maybe next time, try the Thai...

Set in the historical part of Shelby, this is a great destination for dinner. The restored space features a beautiful tin ceiling and some great music. The wait staff was attentive, but not intrusive. Specials when we went included $1 Shrimp Cocktail and $5 Martinis. We also ordered 2 of the entre specials; Fillet Mignon, and Pecan Encrusted Trout. The steak was cooked as ordered, and the trout was very tasty. The sides were perfect. The prices are appropriate. There is an early bird pre fix menu we missed, but it looked very reasonable.

Red Bridges Barbecue Lodge

For over 74 years, pit cooked barbecue has been the art of our success. We are one of the only few places left that slow cooks pork over hickory all night long. We feel that this is the only way to get the true old fashion flavor. 74-years down and a life

We decided to head out for dinner and a movie, throw-back style. Off to Red Bridges in Shelby for some barbecue. We discovered why this little BBQ place has managed to survive for more than 70 years. Simple and delicious, right out of the 60s. Hasn;t changed much for 30 years. One of the 10 must-visits according to Southern Living! Then over to the Hounds in Kings Mountain for a drive-in movie. Haven’t done that in years! Highly recommended.

With a different special every day and amazing variety, it is hard to choose to go anywhere else in Shelby. I enjoyed a Hamburger steak and three veggies. My wife and daughter got a vegetable plate. We all ate plenty of food and it was terrific. The service was amazing. Our waitress genuinely wanted us to enjoy our food and our experience. Actually gave her a hug before we left. I will go again....I encourage you to give this place a try!
