Ponderosa

After a long day, and in an area where I wasn't expecting much besides fast food, we came upon this Ponderosa. The food was really good with a large selection to choose from - some healthy, some not. But there was a choice. It was quick - we didn't have to wait to order, then wait for our food - it's a buffet, so everything was ready and waiting for us. I would have given it a five, but we had to wait a long time before the cashier noticed that we were there. She was off doing something else and not paying attention. While we were having our meal, I noticed several other people having to wait.

Stopped here when first choice was closed. Spacious, family-style feel with large dining area of tables and booths and a separate gaming area. Waitress' first question was "Where are you from?" . She was very gracious and obviously wanted us to feel at ho

Went for a Sunday motorcycle ride and decided to stop for dinner. It was nothing special and the service was extremely slow. However on a Sunday in Moorefield there isn't much of a choice.

I love their deep fried Chimis. The seating is a bit uncomfortable, but tolerable. The atmosphere is ok, but the lottery tv is annoying. The wait staff is friendly and attentive. The food is always good. It definitely needs an update to the furnishings.

You want to like this place -- it's a lovely property and the area cold use a good restaurant that's a little more upscale than the average. Unfortunately the Blue and The Gray needs to up it's game to succeed even in a town starving for variety. The property is lovely, nicely restored historic house with lots of detail. You can see those details because the lighting is set at "operating room" levels. It was like eating in an old folks home where they cater to the sight impared. The food was, at best, edible. The names and descriptions on the menu just set you up for dissapointment. We started in the bar (which is lovely) with "Gumbo Queso Dip" ($7). It was velveta. Don't get me wrong, after enough drinks velveta dip is tasty, but not if you're expecting layers of flavor. There was one layer of flavor -- plastic cheese. We moved on the the dining room, squinting all the way, where we got "Catfish Etoufee" ($19). It's in quotes for a reason. A nice piece of catfish was covered in a strange yellow sweet sauce with tiny raw shrimp. Nope. The second entree was stuffed bison meatloaf with pimento cheese stuffing ($17). First off, not meatloaf. Two rubbery meat spheres with the same plastic cheese inside. More plastic-y due to the fact that it wasn't very warm and got a little play-dohish. Odd. HOWEVER, the potatoes and greenbeans were wonderful. So they can cook when they're not trying to fullfil some fanciful menu notation. For dessert we opted for a forgettable chocolate thing with ice cream -- not bad. The creamcicle cheesecake, on the other hand was a travesty. All I can say for it is that it was the right color. There was no taste of orange or vanilla, it was chalky instead of creamy and the dominant flavor was salt. It went untouched after we tasted it. When we mentioned the dessert to the waitress, she said they get dessert from a local baker, and don't know what's coming in from week to week. She'd tell the manager. That leads me to believe that the kitchen has no problem serving food they've never tasted, because there's no way anyone with a minimal sense of taste would have put that cheesecake on a menu after even one bite. Maybe that was the problem with the whole meal.
