This restaurant was recommended to us by the hotel where we were staying. We were just passing through Hildesheim and it was late in the evening, so we decided to try it out. We weren't expecting much, since we expected it to be a small local village restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated and the staff very warm, friendly and welcoming. The food is excellent. I had a salad with sheep cheese and my husband had the "Wiener schnitzel", a dish that one expects to be "standard". I tried it too and the schnitzel was one of the best I have had in a long time, nice crispy outer crust and very tender meat on the inside. The salad was very fresh and the dressing not at all heavy. Would definitely recommend this restaurant!

If you want to enjoy your coffee & cake off the historic market square (which, in fact, is not as historic as it seems but has been fully reconstructed in the 1980s), walk the few steps to the Pfannkuchenhaus Antik Cafe. (The place is no longer called "Cafe Beste" but, as usual, TripAdvisor finds it hard to accept corrections). From the market square, take the little path left of Hotel Van der Valk into Kaneelstrasse -- the Cafe will be on your left. Pfannkuchenhaus means Pancake House, which points you towards one of their specialties. The pancakes come sweet or savory, and they are not what the average gringo would expect. They are fried and buttered to become crispy on the edges. Try the pumpernickel version; this, too, is maybe not what you might expect but constitutes a Hildesheim Christmas specialty that you can now enjoy all year round. Besides pancakes, they have a daily choice of cakes and pies. The atmosphere is special. You are basically sitting in a little 19th century museum. You are surrounded by period objects, paintings, furniture, dishes and toys. Someone took the trouble to print labels, just in case you need to know whether the table you are sitting at is Biedermeier or Gruenderzeit. If you want to sit outside, they have a little courtyard where you can have lunch or coffee during the summer. Restrooms are downstairs and not accessible for wheelchairs.

Believe it or not, the half chicken served here is simply wunderbar.. Some may even say it is better than roast chicken in Penang!

Delightful small restaurant, very popular with locals, that I found only thanks to Tripadvisor - there's just a small street sign to mark the spot. The menu is limited, but what I ordered (a huge pork schnitzel covered in mushrooms) was excellent. Reception and service were very friendly; and since the weather was fine, I sat outside in the small rear garden, which was especially nice. I don't know how many foreign tourists will find their way here, but if they do, they'll find a pleasant and "typical" German dining experience

This is my 2nd review on this restaurant! The first was because I was so infuriated at the ridiculous comments found in some other reviews which just didn't reflect my numerous experiences there! This review is specifically in response to the exceptional way that they delivered 2 wedding receptions for us. The first was a low key event following our Town Hall bureaucratic wedding and the a more Grand affair into heir upstairs room - full of gothic character and balconies overlooking the animal enclosures found next to the restaurant! A table for 17 please!? No problem - with my British guests blown away by the quality of food, portion sizes, and hospitality! The main reception was catered for by friendly staff who laid on an exceptional hot and cold banquet, inclusive drinks package and cake etcTruly perfect in every way - smiles on the faces of the staff until the very early hours and genuinely very reasonable for the standard and quality of everything presented. They have a dedicated weddings team who help with the arrangements and even supplied a laptop projector and screen for the UK translations! First choice for me if I want a meal out and a serious contender for Weddings of any sensible scale! The staff and owner could not be easier to work with and provided a first class personal wedding package that could not have been better!!

Dinner with a colleague. We don't speak German, realizing they don't have an English menu. The waiter recommended this dish... wunderbare! Service and food outstanding!

This is a wonderful Bavarian-style restaurant. I had the pork roast and dumplings, it was good but not excellent. The burgers I saw at other tables looked wonderful. My girlfriend's garden burger was completely different from any garden burger I have ever seen in the states. It was so good I tried it, it was like biting into a patty of fresh vegetables

We sat in the Biergarten, a small backyard, where every seat was taken, yet it still managed convey an intimate family atmosphere. The menu is familiar German food prepared on the premises. It is a family run business where everyone is involved making the customer feel welcome. The portions are huge and we were glad we all opted for the "small" portion of Schnitzel mit Bratkartoffeln. The Schnitzel (pork cutlet), which took up half the plate, was juicy and the Bratkartoffeln (fried potatoes) seasoned to perfection. There was also a small salad, which offered 5 separate ingredients arranged on one plate, included in the meal. A regular size would have been 2 pieces of meat. We did not have room for dessert.

Restaurant Gildehaus is an appealing contrast of the old with the new. The half-timbered booths are charmingly cosy while the white elements underscore the modern look. These booths are the ideal location for a confidential business meal or a romantic din
We spent there a Sunday evening, having a dinner. Everything was correct, particularly recommendable was goose consommé. Service on the high level, interesting interiors, however it might be considered as a bit too old-fashioned. Quality of food not excellent but having no reason to complaint.
