Matutinaâs, originally located in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan, was a favorite stop-over of northbound motorists. However, since the new expressway extension (TPLEX) was opened about 2 years ago, the old site was effectively bypassed. Its new branch in San Juan, La Union, though not along the route to Baguio City, was therefore a very welcome sight for travelers going to the Ilocos region. Itâs spacious, cool, comfortable and relaxing, with a lot of trees, perfect for those on an eight-hour journey. And the food is really good too!

Another cold rainy night in San Juan led us to the shelter of the first floor of l.u town centre. The guys from above sea level were as usual giving the hard sell despite the fact that their resto had no empty tables. So they say us at sizzling county. It's a steak and ribs place with a Wild West themed decor.I had the New York finest which was beef served with cumin rice and white sauce. It was terrific as was the lengua. The problem we had was the steaks. After the steaks were served we realised that no one asked how we wanted the steaks cooked which is a very amateur move for a steak house. Steak was unseasoned and poorly cooked and lowered my score on what was other wise a good venue

On a wet miserable night we ventured to San Juan in search of something different and in NLMTD we found it, the call the lifeguard burger - 11 inches of pure burger heaven (or hell) in a bun, cheesy, full of salad and with ketchup and mustard - and served with fries and 2 litre iced tea. My wife and I only managed to eat half and we are considered big eaters. So tasty and yet couldn't finish it which says a lot
