Needs repair but friendly staff

Hotel workers/maintenance blare loud music from their cars and seem to live onsite. They drink more beer than a frat party, swim in the pool that says “closed” and enjoy staring at you as you walk from your car to your room. Bathroom door was loose on hinges and would not close. Bathroom light and desk lamp did not work, switch was destroyed and could have shocked me. Door to hotel room was loose in door jamb and would move back and forth half inch even when locked. Friendly staff and good breakfast but rooms weren’t clean, had crumbs/lint on the floor, and hair was in the sink. Dirty and needs repair and maintenance. Disappointed in what appeared to be a nice place from the website and when we arrived.

The National Hotel

The National Hotel has just completed a four million dollar renovation and updating, while maintaining the grand dame's wild west, gold country roots. Rooms and public areas have many of their original fixtures (phones & lighting) and furniture. All rooms are luxury, many with jacuzzis, balconies, heated floors, fireplaces and so much more. Most of the 150 year old bar has been kept in tact and now is an elegant venue for meeting and imbibing, or while waiting for your table at our fine dinner house.

Meh.

My family of four was looking to spend one night in CA Gold Country and did a lot of research on hotels. We chose the National Hotel because of the reviews and the fact they offered rooms with a king-sized bed and a twin trundle for my teens. When we arrived, the town seemed shut down. We had just come from Placerville, which was bustling, and were disappointed in the lack of activity here. The hotel lobby is very cool but the reception upon check in pretty much indifferent. Our room was very dark. The king bed was okay but the kids found the trundle uncomfortable. When we pulled out the bottom bed we found a kid's blanket that had been left behind. We returned it to the front desk, and they were again, indifferent. The breakfast was basic but good enough. Upon check out, no one asked how our stay was, wished us a good day, etc. Not a huge deal but IMO, these things do matter. We went on to various other towns in Gold Country and liked pretty much all of them better. If ever to visit again, I would stay elsewhere.

We have never found such a comfortable motel anywhere on our trip. Lodge sounds expensive, but it isn't. Value for money. Everything was very clean, comfortable beds, large quiet room with a view of the well kept hinterland. Great pool with sun until the early evening. All under the direction an extraordinarily nice gentleman. Thanks very much!! Barbara and Christel from Germany

Lovely stay - were we in the same hotel as some of these reviews?!

Reviewed By Maureen F

We found the hotel by chance having decided it was time to stop driving for the day. What a lucky find! Taylor who checked us in was so helpful & friendly, as were the ladies on duty next morning. Our room was excellent - big, airy & immaculately clean with everything we needed. Super-comfy bed & pillows & a lovely hot shower. The breakfast next morning was a nice surprise, being more substantial than we thought & it was very relaxed with no-one rushing us. The hotel was in excellent condition throughout & very well located for shops etc. I honestly don't know what people are complaining about reading some of the reviews as our experience was first class.
