Situated 221 kilometres (137 miles) west of Tbilisi, on the Rioni River, it is the capital of the western region of Imereti. Historically one of the major cities of Georgia, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia in the Middle Ages, and later as the capital of the Kingdom of Imereti. The Parliament of Georgia moved to Kutaisi in 2012, in an effort to both acknowledge the status of the city, and to decentralise the Georgian government.

Probably one of the best places in Kutaisi to get western fast food of reasonable quality and price. There are many places in the city that try to copy the McD concept, but often the food is greasier there and just not as tasty. The problem with McD is vegetables and fruit. The standard burger just does not contain a lot of vegetables. The best low budget option for European food that I found in the old town is the nearby Cherry restaurant on the third floor of the Karvasla shopping center. For 10 Lari you can get a decent meal there with lots of fresh vegetables. It is buffet style. However, it closes at 6PM, while McDonald's is open late.
