Kutaisi (Georgian: ქუთაისი [kʰutʰɑisi]; ancient names: Aea/Aia, Kotais, Kutatisi, Kutaïsi) is the legislative capital of Georgia, and its 3rd most populous city. Situated 221 kilometres (137 miles) west of Tbilisi, on the Rioni River, it is the capital of the western region of Imereti. Historically one of the major cities of Georgia, it served as the capital of the Kingdom of Georgia in the Middle Ages, and later as the capital of the Kingdom of Imereti. The Parliament of Georgia moved to Kutaisi in 2012, in an effort to both acknowledge the status of the city, and to decentralise the Georgian government.

It's a bit of a trek from the road, but well worth a look. Inside is beautifully preserved, although not a particularly big place.
We did it as a tour with Kutaisi-Tripstation that also covered Prometheus Caves, Sataplia Caves, Gelati Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral. Definitely value for money and a great experience.

Unfortunately the outside is covered in scaffolding at the moment, but the real beauty is inside. It is a shame that there was no one to tell us anything about the place, but it was good just to take it all in visually.
We did it as a tour with Kutaisi-Tripstation that also covered Prometheus Caves, Sataplia Caves, Motsameta Monastery and Bagrati Cathedral. Definitely value for money and a great experience.

It is the biggest cave in Georgia. Only one tenth is open for tourist, still it takes an hour to explore. Only guided tour is permissable.
Cave is having breathtaking views of stalactites, stalagmites, petrified Waterfalls, underground rivers and lakes. Boat ride is possible depending on the weather (water level).

Okatse Canyon is truly amazing place with very beautiful nature and a kind of extreme views from the hight of a bird's flight. The path starts at the visitor centre, continues through the Kolkhan forest and finishes on the iron pathways, stairs and viewpoints built on the top of the canyon itself.

This place has been almost totally rebuilt over the years, which the signs in the grounds explain and show with photos. It could be argued that such extensive renovation has spoiled it and I can see why some would say that, because some parts of it look extremely out of place and out of character. I still think it is worth a visit though!

Very nice market with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese and spices to buy. Recommended to visit and talk to few of villagers if u speak some Russians or Georgian.

This Fountain is marvelous, because it points to the rich heritage of Colchis, the ancient name for east-Georgia. The figures that form the Fountain are originally made of gold, and can be found in the national museum in Tbilisi. They were of course a bit smaller.

This would have been just another historical museum, without an employee of the museum that joined us right when we entered. We went along the whole exhibition together, which was great. He was ready to answer all our questions and you could tell that he is just so enthusiastic about his job. We are not particularly into acheology, but history can be very interesting, and our guide was just great in sharing his knowledge.
