Maharajah Darbar

In mainland Europe, Maharajah Darbar is the best Indian gastronomy restaurant I have ever visited. Those golden utensils, forks and knives, and barbecue-a-la-table kind tandoori brochettes with charcoal....just awesome. So were the rumali roti, The mango Chicken, kashmiri rice and the Kulfi.I would move to visit this restaurant again and again :)

Achiana

Reviewed By Efrin_Knight

Thirty years ago, in 1983, this place was an Arab restaurant where I used to eat a very good couscous with my third ex-French wife, the mother of my younger son, Elden, the Tenor. I remember that they had a nice wood fireplace which was very pleasant during the winter, and we both enjoyed the good food and the atmosphere during many months. Then, the Arab restaurant became an Indian place, the fireplace disappeared and it has remained so ever since. I remember the first Indian owner from the 1980s, who was very smart and friendly. The current Indian owner told me that he is the third one and that the two previous owners died already. I advised him to be careful...Until December 2003, when I moved to Miami Beach, I used to go there every two or three months, and now I try to have lunch at this Champigny Achiana at least once a year.My last visit took place on Wednesday, June 12, 2013 and I had a very good lunch, as usual, for only 9.50 € + 4 € for 1/4 liter of so-so red wine. They also have two other menus, both of them under 20 €.I chose a Pakora (Potato beignet) for a starter, which came with a plain Nan (Indian bread). This was followed by a very good Chicken Curry with rice and I finished with a Halva (Indian cake)As I wrote in the title, this restaurant has always covered its tables with real tablecloth, while most places offering such a cheap menu for lunch (dinner is more expensive) cover them with paper, and sometimes with nothing at all. Also, you will eat each course in a dish, which is changed three times, unlike another Indian place in Montparnasse (for which I already posted a review here in May 2013), where they bring everything in a metal plate with several divisions, as if you were in Alcatraz many, many moons ago! Needless to say that I was never a guest of that venerable institution (although I did have the privilege of being one of the twenty or thirty thousand political guests of Fidel Castro’s dungeons in the 1960s…), but I have seen some movies and documentaries about it.A simple detail will show that these folks are wise professionals. Usually, when you choose a cheap menu, if you leave your fork and knife on the dish, the waiter will take them out, no matter how dirty they are, and put them back on the table instead of changing them. At this Achiana restaurant in Champigny-sur-Marne, if you leave your knife and fork on the table, the waiter will put them on the dish and change them automatically. You only see this detail in refined and expensive restaurants, where you pay "mucho money" to eat. In here, they do it for only 9.50 €… The only problem is that this place is in the outskirts of Paris. To go there, you must take the RER A (Gare du Nord, Châtelet, Gare de Lyon or Nation) and get off at "Joinville le Pont". Then you take bus 108, get off at the second stop after "La Fourchette" and walk half a block. The whole trip will take you about thirty minutes from Gare de Lyon or Nation. If you like Indian food and happen to be in the area of Paris Nation, where I usually stay at the "Hôtel Lux" (the best value for money in Paris, for which I posted one of my first reviews in March 2009), you may want to try this place which is less than half an hour away from "Nation" by public transportation.

This restaurant serves very nice and tasty dishes in a very cosy atmosphere. The service is good and the owner of the restaurant who is also serving the dishes is a very nice and polite person. We have known this restaurant since it opened and have never been disappointed. We can definitely recommend it !

The greeting and the service at the Taj were very good, the waiter being very helpful. The food was OK, but lacked the spice blends that set a great Indian meal apart from an average one.

Starting on a positive note, the service here is quite good, very friendly and welcoming, a little drink is offered on arrival ( nice but also common practice). The restaurant albeit small is well decorated and cosy in the winter time, a little away from the main centre of La Varenne, it's calm and easy to park. The food however, is disappointing, sometimes it's nice and fresh with great flavours and sometimes it's really not with cheap fatty cuts of meat and so so sauces. They really need to make their cooking more consistent if they want their clients to keep going back and back. Just to give a little example, my father ordered monkfish as a starter and instead came salmon with no "oh I'm sorry Sir" just a roll of the eyes and quite a cheeky attitude, something that I really cannot stand from waiters. Little things but when they mount up you realise that you really paid over the odds for a meal that you could frankly cook much better at home with a cookbook
