Intimate bistrot, quirky and sympa waiter. Food disappointing. Fish soup more like a bisque, I liked it but my husband didn't. Advertised at 9,50 per kg on the board, our two cups were that price each! Sole in a rancid butter/ juice was "terrible". Quinoa bland and overcooked. My lotte in meaty gravy was quite nice, apart from fatty bacon wrap, salad was lovely, as was glass of Spanish white wine.

Fantastic restaurant with a very traditional and cozy interior and very good food and wine. Plat de jour , Couscous, was only served for lunch but they arranged to serve us for dinner. It tasted delicious. Their Pizza is also great. Nice prices. We had managed to close our self out of our residence and asked the manager if she knew anyone who could help us. The restaurant was fully booked but she called a few phone calls and helped us solve our problem . The staff went over the edge to help us in this problem.

On our last night in the Biarritz area, we chose La Plancha for dinner. So glad we did. It is, in a word, marvelous. They do not take reservations but open at 715 PM. By the time we arrived around 730 (in time for sunset) the parking lot was packed and there was a line of people waiting to be seated. We didn't care. The beauty and ambiance of the setting alone compelled us to stay and wait as long as necessary for a table. Situation right on the water with the best surf (4-5 foot crashing waves) along with the unobstructed view of the setting sun made this setting incredible. There is outside seating but clearly the preference was for outdoor seating because the view was so wonderful. The Maitre D had on jeans and a captain's hat and reminded me of the skipper on Gilligan's Island. He was tall, large and in charge and took no crap from patrons who tried to talk their way to the head of the line. After waiting patiently he found us a table at the end which we shared with two young couples. We had a perfect view of the sea although our seating was covered. Of course, the menu was mostly seafood and it all looked wonderful as we watched other patrons being served. We started with olives and fresh bread (what else in France) and I ordered scallops while my partner ordered Langoustine. Both dishes were delicious and served with salad. We ordered a lovely bottle of white wine and finished our meal with chocolate mousse. What a meal !!! What a setting !!! What a marvelous way to conclude our lovely time on the French west coast. Although the restaurant was very busy our service was excellent and it was fun watching the staff work hard to keep patrons happy. No wonder people keep coming back here. We cannot wait to return to this part of France so we can eat and drink here again. Do not miss this phenomenal slice of paradise on the beautiful coast of France. It is spectacular.

a brand new venture in Guethary replacing the pretty average "all you can eat" Ximist.Complete overhaul and redecoration with plenty of outdoor seating and a light and airy interior - and only opened in July this yearFresh fish and seafood (landed in St Jean de Luz just down the road ) beautifully prepared and presented.A small selection of meat dishes available too.We had a platter oysters and ceviche of dorade with avocado and grapefruit as starters followed by hake with a "concasse" tomato sauce and seared tuna pieces with a light but tasty dressing. Cheeses and an apricot clafoutis tart for sweets also great. Wine very reasonably priced and we had a really good Madiran red.We admired the size and content of the "plateau de fruits de mer" being served to other diners and had our visit not been on the spur of the moment , would have ordered them - next time perhaps ( They do the fruits de mer as a " take away" too ordered from the bar area)Despite it being an out of season Tuesday night there was a nice atmosphere and the staff friendly and cheerful.

First of all, we were staying in San Sebastian. I had previously booked a reservation at their sister restaurant nearby at a "ferme" (farm) Ostalapia that had been featured on an episode of Parts Unknown w/Anthony Bourdain on the San Sebastian episode. Well, to begin with, it was beyond difficult to book even that reservation as their website (REALLY) states that you must call in to get a reservation (yet, when even in this internet day and age, it is 100 TIMES easier for all modern restaurants in all Western nations to do it online). So I had called in 2 months prior and booked via Skype and even that took 2-3 calls over a couple of weeks. Mon dia!Well lo and behold, we are in San Sebastian. And instead of our 1 pm reservation, we want to change it to noon that day as we are up and about. So we ask our BedandBreakfast host to call them to see if they can change it. Well, lucky for us, he called. Why? We could not go to Ostalapia. Why? They had booked a wedding in the interim. Did I receive a call or an e-mail? Of course not. Why? Come on, these are the French, the worst humans on earth, on average. Trust me, I have been there before-unfortunately. Anyway, we had plans. And it was a gorgeous late Sept. day. So we agreed to go their "sister" restaurant on the sea. Nice location. Great patio overlooking the sea. Nice waitress-totally unFrench. Stated she did not speak hardly a word of Spanish despite living about 20 miles from Spain. But her English was great. Loved it.We ordered the grilled whole Turbot-the local fish. Simple but super fresh. Loved it. And the "french fries" were actually good. And, get this, they offered (and actually served) free, delicious, tap water unlike anywhere in Spain even though their water is absolutely fine. No stupid, over priced Perrier-oh mi dios! And I even got my Orangina, which is hard to come by in supermarkets in the US.In the end, Ostalamer saved the Osta "alleged" franchise.

The fresh fish here is stunning, and you can eat like kings for about 40€ a head. We had a salad of scallops and stuffed mussels for starters, then monkfish with piperade, which was huge. Rice or baked potatoes are the only sides. Here fish is the star, as the wet fish counter proves. The service is lovely, correct but relaxed, in line with the feel of the place. The boss always offers us a free digestif, then some other customers invited us for a drink on the terrace, it's that kind of place. And watching surfers as you eat is really amazing. Love Tantina, love Bidart, love Pays Basque!
