When you go out for a meal with friends and your partner you can forgive the food a little if the service is good. This place looks welcoming and it's clean inside. The menu is also fine with local choices. The reason we won't be going back there again is that the hostess was just plain rude. The husband is fine and charming, his wife more like Sybil Fawlty. Probably fine if you're local and French, but verging on the unpleasant if you're not.

Le Pre Fillet

On our most recent visit we decided to try the excellent value weekday set lunch, a real bargain at €14 for four courses with wine and coffee. Our menu began with an adequate starter of chicken liver pâté (somewhat liverish and quite grainy) which was served with excellent fresh crusty 'farmhouse' bread and a dollop of fruity chutney. The main course of pig's tongue with a piquant sauce required a certain amount of courage at first (mostly on account of the skin - which left you in absolutely no doubt that this was indeed tongue) but in fact it was surprisingly tender and very tasty. It was served with tiny wedges of golden roasted potatoes and a mixture of (frozen) veggies. So far, so OK. Then came the wait, which wouldn't have been half so bad (after all we had wine to sip and a stunning view to look out at) had our waitress not come over specially to tell us that she couldn’t clear our table, because she first had to serve 'very important businessmen who have to get back to work'. Far better, I feel, to have said nothing!!! She redeemed herself somewhat by (eventually) bringing us an outstanding cheeseboard - and a knife with which to cut our own selection.Things were nicely rounded off by dessert, which we selected from a (modest) list. My ice-cream was fine, though nothing to write home about. My husband however made the winning choice; so-called 'gourmet' coffee, which came with mini portions of three different desserts - a slab of layered chocolate gâteau, a chocolate-coated biscuity case containing stewed apple and apple ice cream and finally, a tiny crème brûlée. Very good, it was!To sum up, the only real drawback was that the restaurant was overly-full for what was clearly (on this particular day) a reduced (and therefore very stressed) staff - and fewer customers would have been better served. Those ‘important businessmen’ left before their dessert - while a group of eight cross-country skiers who hadn’t booked were squeezed in at the last minute.

Brasserie Les Varietes

This bustling bistro was full up on a weekday lunchtime with local office workers and folk of all ages, evidently regular customers, all enjoying the buzz and communicating from table to table. Informal, friendly and efficient service despite the rush. We felt instantly at home, and every service contact was professional (with an appealing cheekiness). Our salads were only so-so, but the hot food on the other tables looked better, and this bistro is evidently about providing a filling lunch at a certain standard with an extra helping of charming banter.

This was an easy choice as I was staying in this hotel. My colleague and I shared the 3 cheese fondue that was served with a meat tray selection and small new potatoes. The fondue was very good and the wait staff was kind and courteous.

We loved this restaurant. The service was incredible, staff was extremely friendly and warm and the atmosphere was fantastic. Don't let the outside of the restaurant fool you into thinking it isn't worth a visit. We are hoping to go back again on this trip!!! We LOVED the fondue (a mix of comte, morbier and bleu de gex). I had the food as a resident and as an external guest. As a resident it was very ordinary but the staff were helpful and friendly. As an external guest the food stepped up considerablyFrankly needs help to really mpove forward. Nothing bad just nothing greatDear Andrew,Thank you for your kind comment on the staff but concerning the restaurant, earnestly, you can't expect to eat the same thing when you are a resident paying 14.00 € for the diner + the breakfast and when you eat "à la carte"! For residents it is still a home made cuisine but it will of course be a bit more simple.Kind regards

Salad 90% lettuce. Complained about bone dry bread, we were told it was hot ( how about a damp tea towel??) then when asked for replacement told the baker was on holiday ( unlike all the ones we saw that were open!). Half litre of Jura Red Wine was undrinkable - definitely not as advertised. Why make such a simple meal so bad?? Never, ever eat here.

The restaurant had been recommended to us by a shop-owner in St. Claude. When we arrived there without reservation we got a grumpy reply that we should have reserved. Strangely the place never filled up during the evening. The waiter started to put paper place mats on our table, when he saw their business card given to us by the shipowner, he changed to cloth mats ..The service started to get friendlier after we have ordered. Although the service reception was quite awkward the food was actually fresh, delicious and well presented.
