Le Meat

Looking for a straightforward meal on a stopover evening in Orleans on the way south. After a walk around the beautiful cathedral area we found this restaurant on a street full of similar places. A quick look at the menu outside confirmed that this is a heavily protein based establishment with a simple menu - perfect for 4 committed carnivores and a food motivated beagle. We sat outside at one of the small number of tables jammed onto the pavement on a busy street of bars and restaurants giving a busy, pleasant environment. The owner was friendly and welcoming - brought a water bowl for the the dang without being asked. Always a popular move with those of us travelling with the family pet.We ordered a large sharing board - charcuterie and cheese as a starter between the four of us. followed by confit of duck, a magret du canard and the entrecôte brochettes. When the starter arrived we knew we were in trouble! It was huge - groaning with some very good charcuterie and a nice selection of cheeses. We did our best, but mindful that the main course may very well be on a similar scale we did not finish the whole thing. The main courses were served very simply with French fries (vegetables or salad were also offered.) the fries were excellent - clearly home made on the premises. Both the duck dishes were very good. The brochettes were the only disappointment - very tasty and served with a nice selection of sauces but the beef was a little tough. Eating there again, I would go for a steak rather than the brochettes. The main courses were of equally daunting proportions. A doggy bag was provided for the left over meat and the hound was very happy with his breakfast the next morning. The bill, for four with water, soft drinks and a nice bottle of Loire valley wine was very reasonable. Definitely recommended but go hungry!!

We asked at the Ibis where to eat, and we were given a 20% discount voucher for here, a cut above the usual burger places, and when realising we were English the waiter found us English menus.
