El Alma Cafe

We chose El Alma randomly because it had a rooftop patio. We had to wait nearly an hour but weren't in a hurry so it didn't really matter. We were able to sit on the multi-level rooftop patio and really enjoyed the view of the Austin skyline, good food and good drinks. Our waiter seemed annoyed to be there but maybe he'd had a bad day. It didn't keep us from having fun.

Juan in a Million

In the summer of 1980, two school teachers opened a restaurant in East Austin on a mission to revolutionize breakfast. Nearly 40 years later, Juan in a Million’s authentic Mexican cuisine has become famous both in Austin and around the world. Some say our

Quick bday girls trip to the ATX....asked all my buddies what is the ONE place that we absolutely could NOT miss - and it was a unanimous Juan in a Million! Excellent recommendation.Delicious brunch, excellent service, super casual environment, and great prices! Made us feel like a million bucks, especially after a late night enjoying the vibrant nightlife. Ordered the Migas - very generous portion of cheesy goodness, complete with potatoes, beans, and flour tortillas. Chips and salsa were great. They even brought out a less spicy second salsa option for my Yankee friend.Quick $6 Uber ride from our hotel. Will definitely be looking forward to my next trip.Thank you for swinging by while you were in Austin for your trip! We're happy that you enjoyed our migas, chips, and salsa. It was definitely no problem for us to make a less spicy salsa for your friend. Hope you visit us soon, Juan in a Million Family

Chuy's Restaurant

This place was recommended to me by the girl at the front desk of the hotel I stayed at. I usually shy away from chains but didn't realize it was part of a chain until after I'd already eaten there and been wowed. There's an all-you-can-eat nacho car (bar) during happy hour M-F. That alone is worth the visit. All you need to order is a drink and the nacho car is yours to visit as many times as your stomach can manage. There are great thin tortilla chips, their wonderful queso, their exceptional refried beans, taco meat with pepper and onion bits, sliced pickled jalapenos, pico de gallo (their original spicy salsa), and ranchero sauce (according to them, the least spicy, but still had a nice kick).Upon learning it was my first visit, my wonderful waiter offered me samples of any of the salsas on the menu. The Hatch green chile came out warm, and genuinely spicy (like it should be!). I tried not to go overboard on the free stuff because I wanted to try something on the menu. Friday's special offering, chicken enchiladas with a creamy spicy avocado salsa (and the standard rice and refried beans), was recommended, and was delicious, reasonably priced, and a large enough portion that I had leftovers enough for breakfast. And seriously, any Tex-Mex or Mexican place that makes refried beans as good as Chuy's is a 10 in my book.Go. You won't be sorry you did.

Fonda San Miguel is one of those magical old school Austin places. The interior reminds me of some of my favorite places in Mexico City. Happy hour is the perfect opportunity to explore the menu and taste multiple items. Also, their cocktails are unique and always Mexican inspired. Be patient as there are a lot of people that love their happy hour. Know you’ll probably have to go to the bar, grab a drink and wait it out. But it’s worth it.
