During our time in Devonport, my wife and I decided to have dinner one evening at Taj Mahal. We arrived at around 6:00pm and were seated right away. However, a “Bush Christmas” was being celebrated in town; a large party was expected, so we arrived at the right time. While I didn’t see it on the menu, I love masala chai and asked if I could order a cup. The server cheerfully checked and advised that the kitchen would be happy to prepare a cup for me. One of the owners then came out to make sure I enjoyed the masala chai. I really appreciated this personal service! Just as important, the masala chai was very good. I started with an order of samosas which included 2 samosas. They were good, but I was a little disappointed with the shell. The vegetable filling was tasty, but the shell was a little overdone. My main course more than made up for the samosas. I had lamb vindaloo which was authentically spicy and accompanied by a fragrant rice a garden salad and naan. This meal was delicious and enough for me to have a second meal of vindaloo, rice and naan the following day. The restaurant is spacious with comfortable seating and was very clean. While I understand the practicality of plastic covers for tables, they are not aesthetically appealing. Laundering the lovely tablecloths that were under the plastic would be my preference. Still, I enjoyed my dinner at this restaurant and was appreciative that the kitchen staff graciously prepared a cup of masala chai for me.

This is an amazing venue, very understated but the food talks for itself. Superb food from the entrees of tandoori lamb and chicken and tasty Samosas to the curries which burst with great flavours. We just keep going back the host and his family make you feel so welcome.
