Tourist Trap

Facilities are not what you'd expect for an idillic resting place, as advertised. The place is noisy and staff are unwelcoming. The place feels run down and desperate to make money. Staff were not wearing masks, as necessary. Would not recommend.

Paradise with tingling bells

After a few days of rain and cool temperatures at the west coast of Portugal, we took off towards the Alentejo and the sun turned on! On the spot we checked what was available in the area and came across Monte the Boa Vista and booked it for 1 night. It was a little difficult to find, the last part of the road is also a little rocky and bumpy. But when we arrived we immediately booked it for another 2 nights. What a beautiful, tranquil and amazing place! The rooms are huge, also equiped with a little kitchen and a BBQ outside. They all look out over the pool and because the 'resort' (don't worrty they only have a few rooms) is on top of a hill, you have the most beautiful view of the surrounding area. Lying at the pool, the only thing you hear is the tingling of the bells of the goats that pass... There's a big Intermarche close by and you can also visit the lake, its about half an hour drive. A few very nice restaurants also in the area, but we especially enjoyed the BBQ next to our little cottage. The owners are really friendly and helpful as well. We had an amazing time in this little paradise!

I spent three unforgettable days in Herdade Vale de Cabras. Manuela is very kind and her breakfast is one of the best of your life. Position is perfect: you are surrounded by nature but you are close to the most important cities of Alentejo. Everything is very clean and well kept. Last but not least: you can see a wonderful starry sky!

Every trip has its low point and this was it for ours. Being a holiday weekend we made the mistake of not booking rooms in Evora early enough so had to find somewhere for the night and this place was the nearest available. At 60€ for the night for the 3 of us with no breakfast it was more expensive than usual for our last minute booking technique. (We averaged 45€ to 50€ per night incl breakfast) We arrived to find it locked up but repeated rings on the bell brought a response from the lady proprietor, cheery welcome not included! I was starting to see "Bates Motel" signs flashing in my mind!! The building is clean and well maintained. The room was likewise but dated although the air con worked as did the old TV. We asked if the attached restaurant was open for dinner or breakfast. No. We asked where we could eat and she did the fingers walking signal and pointed towards the town. We then showered to find the bathroom floor went from shiny and slippery tiles when dry to downright lethal ice rink when wet and the water leaked out into the main room thereby increasing the kill zone! The local chorus of barking dogs finally quieted at about 1am and we got some sleep only to be awake at 7 to the calls of the local dogs. This was fortuitous as by 9.30 they were actively changing rooms and knocking up those still in bed to get them cleared out ASAP. The floor was still wet and everything damp. Portal itself is a nice rural town and we had a great meal in a locals bar on the lower square but the accommodation block is best avoided.
