Hotel d'Alibert

Centuries-old historical building with excellent included breakfast

Reviewed By JeffB4706

We two stayed in the room "Le Furet" in Sep 2021 during a one-night stop in Caunes-Minervois. It was pleasing to be in this historical building, and we would stay here again. The service provided by Frédéric and his team was excellent, including advice about the town. The included breakfast was served at tables in the historical ambiance of the interior courtyard. It was very generous and delicious. Garage parking is available, with a door opening into the hotel.

We stayed for one night and I had a lovely swim in the superb large pool. Breakfast was lovely. Homemade preserves with crusty bread, fruits, croissant and coffee and grapefruit juice. Simple very fresh food. The hosts are very helpful. They found me an extra pillow for the night as I like two. Highly recommended.

A Big Hand

Reviewed By Anthony B

Let me introduce you to the crepuscular town of Caune Minervois. One of the twilight settlements just off the main route from Beziers to Carcassonne. It's also one of the most marmoreal places I've ever visited. This region of France is noted for its high-quality Minervois wine. What you might be surprised to find is the proliferation of deeply veined and richly coloured marble which they quarry in the surrounding hills. Caune Minervois is 'marble central'. Wherever you look, there are sculptures and monuments carved from this local resource. These range from alluring nudes, brutal angular forms and of course the big hand. But as Leonardo DaVinci famously said: "I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” As long as that angel is a deep red colour with distinct grey highlights, then there are a host of ethereal beings waiting for liberation around here. The Marbrerie Hotel sits in the centre of the village. You won't struggle to find it. Just ask directions to the establishment that boasts a large marble hand holding a bunch of local grapes and most will know where to send you. I mean, you can't miss it. It's massive and, to me, a little disquieting to be honest. The Hotel decor continues to celebrate the local stoneware. Almost everywhere you look, there are distinctive objets that pay marmoreal homage. Not only in the red-tinged gift shop but fire surrounds, tables, countertops and sanitary-ware. They're proud of this unique natural material and the many items, useful or otherwise that can be made from it. This symphony of stone gives The Marbrerie a distinct Belle Monde feel. That and the period furniture, the frosted glass lampshades and turn of the century wallpaper. You could be an absinthe-soaked artist reeling in from the local bar as you drink your way through the French countryside. It’s an apt place to recover before you continue your louche adventuring. From that point of view, The Marbrerie offers a unique experience, far from the snap-out-of-the-mould chain hotels that dominate the stopover market. To stay here is a throwback to a more gentile age where you enjoyed a bespoke service in truly unique surroundings. As you might expect with character comes quirkiness. That includes creaking floorboards, strange washbasins and whistling pipework. And there is a distinct edge of gloom as the dark furniture soaks up the light. To some, these features may grate but don't let it put you off. It is a unique spot provided at a very reasonable nightly rate. You'll pay a lot more for this kind of experience in the city centre, so make sure you enjoy the ambience, it's a rare thing! We decided to take breakfast offered as it was at the off-kilter price of €8.85. As you might expect, it was a continental affair of fruit, bread, jam and good coffee. Of course, devilled kidneys, spicy boudin and madeleines steeped in lime cordial might have been more evocative, but it was a decent petit-dejeuner served at a reasonable cost, so no problem. So if you want to get in touch with your inner Proust, then The Marbrerie is the perfect place to remember a lost time. And all in a sumptuous, marble encrusted tribute to the Belle Epoque here in the 21st century.

It is situated in the old center of the village in a very narrow street. It is difficult to reach by car, but there is possibility for free parking at 100 m. The rooms and beds a good. Small, but well equipped bathroom with a modern shower. The people are very warm and friendly. The breakfast is excellent: fried eggs or omelet, fresh bread and croissant etc. There is possibility to do your laundry.
