Yoshima Parking Area

Reviewed By Michael L - Tokushima, Japan

In Japan, they like to rate things - and there of course are the three best places in Japan to see a sunset. Or more, depending on which website you look at. This place is not on any of those lists, but it should be.
If your travels are going to take you across the Seto-Ohashi Bridge between Honshu and Shikoku, I highly recommend timing it so that you can stop at this rest area in the late afternoon, give yourself a little time to eat dinner, and then go outside and relax as the sun sets over the Inland Sea. The Islands in the distance, the ships slowly chugging through the straights, and even the industrial city of Marugame in the distance make for a very lovely scene.
Their is a food court, which provides the usual fare for rest stops. There is also an udon restaurant with a view, but this closes at 5:00. Above the restaurant is an observation deck with a fairly good view, but you can also walk around the small park to the south of the parking lot and get other good views.
There is also some sort of oil refinery to the south, along the path of the bridge. I find this place is an interesting combination of both the natural and industrial faces of Japan. If you are in the area, and the timing is right, this is a nice spot for a break.

Marugame is a fantastic little castle, one of the 12 originals in Japan. It is good walk a bit hot and humid in July, with a great view of the city. Got some wonderful photos even with it being overcast.

Although we have been to this temple several times, it is always pretty and seems to change with the seasons. Be sure to explore the hill behind the temple with a small shrine filled with tanuki, or "racoon dogs" and the somber crypt with Kannon statues dedicated to lost children. The garden is especially lovely in the spring.

Higashiyama Kaii Setouchi Museum

Reviewed By KC930 - Hong Kong, null, Hong Kong

It’s smaller than what I was expecting. I feel there were more paintings by Higashiyama Kaii san at this other museum of his somewhere else in Japan (think it was Nagano?). Nevertheless, love his paintings so this was worth the trip from Sakaide Station. The cafe has an awesome view of the Seto Ohashi bridge. I didn’t sit down at the cafe though and instead walked to the area outside the cafe (which you don’t need tickets to get to, if the museum doesn’t interest you). There are benches there too!
To get to this museum, if you don’t have a car (like me) you can either rent a bicycle from Sakaide Station (available at the Tourist Information Centre) or take the very infrequent bus from Sakaide Station. Caveat is you have to return the bike by 16:30 so that didn’t work for me and it was a rather dark and gloomy day - not very pleasant to cycle especially in an industrial area. The bus that returns to the station is past 18:00 and by then it will be too dark and cold (it’s a very deserted area! And the museums close at 17:00 and there is absolutely nothing else there). So I called a taxi (the staff at the Seto Ohashi Memorial Hall kindly helped me call) and for reference it was 2160 yen for me. Better than walking or waiting for the bus for 1h+ in the dark!
In hindsight I should’ve tried to go earlier in the day and cycle there...

I didnt know either artist, but I found Genchiro Inokuma very varied and it was interesting to see the differences in his works - the way his paintings evolved.
Ohtake's exhibition was awesome- crazy, insane, colorful, all over the place. Loved it, an awesome contemporary artist. Its up until November 2013- worth it if you are in the area!
the building itself, the entrance is also cool.

Ubushina Shrine

Reviewed By Lara N - Takamatsu, Japan

Ubushina shrine is not a destination, but a beautiful stop if you are in the area. The small shrine has a long staircase leading up to a maze of shady paths that have surprising turns with interesting rocks and views. At the base is a little park for a toddler to enjoy stretching legs and running around. Be sure to look for the break in the rock fence in the parking lot which leads to Ubushina Udon. It has good food at a reasonable price.

I think this place is good for kids. I only tried the bowling, the facility is really out of condition. besides this, I didn't find any else interesting.
it's quite dead in the night. I am the only one playing there. so didn't feel the excitement at all. feel sorry for the whole property, the business must be strugglling for a while. for such a small town, not enough demand could support this concept.
good luck!

Seto Ohashi Commemorative Museum

Reviewed By Easytravel88 - Hong Kong, China

We visited the museum on our way back fro Shikoku to Honshu. The museum is about 15 minutes drive from Marugame city and is situated next to and underneath the Seto Ohashi Bridge which connects Shikoku to Honshu. Parking is free. The musuem is a little weird-looking building with a pyramid-shaped roof. The rooftop observation deck offers a good look of the Seto Ohashi Bridge. I guess the exhibits inside the museum give a good guide about the history and construction of the Seto Ohashi Bridge, and the movies were interesting although we just understood a little bit of it.
