Also here is Peneda-Gerês, Portugal’s only national park, a gorgeous wilderness area of mountains, gorges, water features and wildlife. Many picturesque villages and manor houses dot the countryside. Two areas are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Alto Douro Wine Region, and the Paleolithic rock art in the Côa Valley.

Disappointed at the Hotels Intransigence

Reviewed By 486BobB

We accept that travel; during the pandemic has been fraught - and last year when the travel rules relaxed we booked a long weekend at the Douro Royal Valley and we were really looking forward to the trip. Everything went swimmingly until the British Government changed the travel rules (yes I know this is not the hotels fault!). Unfortunately their cancellation rules were 72 hours out or pay for entire trip. The change happened in rules occurred less than 24 hours. I spoke with the hotel about credit for future visits or pay night one only to no avail. A very painful lesson from an industry looking to get back on its feet and I am certainly happy to help. However, it will not be the Douro Royal Valley that i will help in the future. A shame really - even Ryanair gave a travel credit against future flights!

Nice and clean hotel

Position: hotel is 10metres from the metro station Casa de Musica. And about 50mins walk to the center. To the airport by Uber 10euros (12,5km). Room: a small room with a large bed. The room 407 is situated to the street – very noisy from metro, bus, reconstruction… the room is nice, clean, the shower is actually part of the bedroom (it´s in the middle, with glass walls). Disadvantage: There is one big duvet, a small window. Equip: safe, hair drier, TV, Aircon, freeWiFi-good, a small fridge, nespresso coffee machine with 2 capsules. Breakfast: average, juice tasteless, coffee-average, Staff: friendly, average English Overall: Nice and clean hotel, for reasonable price. Recommended

The shower cubicle was very clean and offered perfect water pressure and easily adjustable water temperature. The beds were very comfortable, the bed linen crisp white and good quality. Big bonus the air conditioning worked perfectly. Our room also had a small balcony. Things to note: no lift and hot drinks only available from venďing machine on the ground floor. Large lockers available to leave luggage before check in and also after check out if required. Location 2-3 minute walk to old town square (downhill). What is good: The view, the cleanliness, the cocktails, the pool; What is Medium: The mattress, (average but OK) pillows (too high and very hot - two pillows each should be different thicknesses). The rooms - lovely now while new, but I can see they will suffer from wear and tear within months. The shower room walls are made of plaster board and the toilet and shower are either side of the basin unit. The toilet door, like the shower door, is open at the top so any bad smells from the former can be shared in the bedroom. The breakfast - OK, but no jam. Had to ask for black tea bags. Would be nice if the drinks were served, particularly for the less mobile. What is bad: The winding road up to the rooms (goes on for km’s) with sharp bends. The signs. Tiny brown, with symbols that can’t be seen/understood easily if you drive by or in the dark. How do you know that a plate/knife/fork picture is also the Hotel Bar? The steps, oh boy the steps, there must be 1000’s. Some of which are not the normal maximum height of 18cm, but at least 20cm or more. My knees know. And the lovely granite "calçada" paving has occasional missing stones or loose stones which are serious trip hazards. No wheel chairs possible at this establishment and anyone who is unsteady or uses a walking stick is at great risk of tripping or falling. The Food/Bar area: Was soulless - like a posh school dining hall (but with a great view). NO information in rooms: - just referring you to an app. if you can’t or don’t want to use this app then the communication of everything - meals, menus, where is the bar, towels for the pool you have to dial 9 to ask. Who wants to ask "What are you facilities?" I HATE using the phone. You might only get to find out what you missed when you LEAVE… if you are lucky. There are instructions near the pool not to use the room towels - I happened to find a "pool towel" left by another guest on a sun bed - but no information that they were available and where to get them from. I don’t imagine that the app tells you any of this either.

We really enjoyed our four night stay here. It's a business hotel on the outskirts of town rather than a tourist spot. But outside of town is a 15 minute walk away and less than that is a great supermarket and a MaccyD's. Staff are excellent and Juan in particular is a delight - willing, able and highly competent. The rooms are good and the bed is one of the best hotel beds we've ever slept in. We recommend this as a darn good hotel.
