Wisconsin Resorts | Places to Stay in Wisconsin

April 19, 2023 Roger Rusk

When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks. Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings. Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells! Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

Unfortunate start turned great!

We booked a spontaneous trip to Grand Geneva for Memorial Day weekend to get away from home for a couple days. We booked a suite to accomodate our family of four. Prior to departing for our trip, we received a call from Caitlyn telling us that the air-conditioing in our room was broken and that no other suites were available. She offered to put us in a 3-bedroom villa for the inconvenience with no change in price. We really wanted to be in the main lodge for the convenience and access to the pool, restaurants, and other activiites. However, the stay in the Villa was exceptional, and surprisngly very convenient and accessible. Caitlyn also provided some additional indulgences to make our stay very memorable. Highly recommend the Grand Geneva for standing behind their satisfaction guarantee. Caitlyn also deserves a huge thank you!

We have stayed here twice. The first time in Tamarack and this time in Cedar. Both visits were relaxing despite cold, snowy weather. Both units we stayed in had kitchenettes, which worked out well for us given I enjoy cooking. The staff were friendly and accommodating. My only complaints were that the 4-cup coffee maker is just wretched and I brought my own the 2nd time. The other issue is that I wish the kitchenette had a few more cooking utensils. We intend to make another visit in the fall. Thank you.

Beautiful hotel, questionable owners

Reviewed By tatormae

The grounds are beautiful and I liked my room. The staff interactions were friendly. Look, the January 6th committee was televising their findings and as a good American, I wanted to watch. I kid you not - they only have Fox News and Newsmax (which isn’t a real news channel). Of course neither channel were airing what I wanted. They also don’t have Bravo but thank god they have Newsmax! Even if you’re a Republican ran hotel, not all your guests want faux news channels. This reason alone is why I probably won’t ever stay here again. I’m not lining the pockets of owners who have Newsmax over Bravo. Your guests deserve better.

Avoid at all costs

Wow. This is going to be a long review. Lets start with the check in process. There is one person working the front desk (okay its COVID times so thats completely expected), but most of the rooms we had reserved were wrong. We were booked directly with the hotel, so none of the 'expedia messed up' it was the hotel directly. They told the bride we were with they did not have any bridal suites, the best best had the same room reserved, checked in right after her and was able to get that same room category. So they just bluntly lied. If you are handicap, this is not the hotel for you. There is A LOT of walking to get to each floor and room. While they do have some elevators, if they are working, find somewhere else The smell. The hotel is being renovated, but they could not get rid of the smell of mildew and mold. Our buddy stayed in a room next to us and i wouldn't even let my two year old go inside because it smelled like weed so bad. i am unsure if they actually even clean the rooms. Our sheets had hair on them. Our fridge was broke. Again with a two year old so have to have a fridge for milk. they did replace the fridge so us, but it never got cold enough. (I attached some photos of the gross rooms) The service.. WOOF. there were maybe 5 other tables at both the lunch and breakfast restaurants when we went. It took 45 minutes for our breakfast (pancakes and yogurt) and an hour for our lunch to come out. the lunch at least came our before our drinks were served ha! I was here for a wedding and let me tell you the wedding coordinators here are a JOKE. I work in the industry myself and i cannot say enough bad things about them. Its almost laughable. Our friends wedding had to be moved inside due to weather (not the resorts fault at all). When she asked if the flower girls could throw flowers they responded "I guess, but we will just have to pick them up" oh you will have to do your job? wow. She was promised a bridal suite, they did not give it to her instead was given a complimentary lunch HA. The table where her parents were sat was wrong even though she had given them the exact table numbers and who would be at each table. so the father of the bride had to sit at a different table. The service was just god awful. If you are planning on staying here don't. if you are planning on getting married here RUN FOR THE HILLS. esp if stephanie adamski is your planner. It also took 3 months just to get a room block here.. shouldve been a red flag right there.

Disappointing

Reviewed By 700dough

We were happy with the cleanliness and overall condition of this house. The beds were comfortable, and the covered deck was quite nice. But, we were disappointed with the amenities. It is advertised as being able to sleep 14 (5 queen beds and two fold out sofas). The living room had seating for only 5 people. There was one coffee table and a small bookcase, and nothing else. The dining room had seating for only six. The kitchen had a nice refrigerator and microwave; but the stove didn’t seem to heat adequately. The only other appliance was a four cup coffee maker. Four cups! No toaster or anything else. Including no pots, pans, bakeware, plates, glasses, coffee cups, tableware, knives, cooking utensils, etc. we did find out that we could go to the office and get a tub with some pots and pans, but nothing else. So the first thing we had to do was find a store so we could stock up on supplies - an unexpected expense. The website gives no warning that these items are not supplied. Our family had a fun weekend, but next time we’ll stay somewhere else.

Champagne?

Reviewed By 619melodied

The jacuzzi suite was nice, area was good and plenty of things to do with it being a bit rainy, but when we went to open our complimentary champagne we discovered it wasn't champagne at all, but a bottle of apple cider... Still, wouldn't have ruined our anniversary night, except that it required a bottle opener to even drink! So we had a very sober, very ok, anniversary (after 10pm there's no one to open the bottle)... Website could be updated to say the champagne doesnt contain alcohol, or just call it sham-pagne instead of the misleading wording... Still, everything else was good, might try again next year in a less expensive room considering there's no champagne anyway.

Main outdoor playground was closed sadly as is most other attractions in April with outdoor waterparks.

Dirty and LOUD

Reviewed By X1032UHjamiew

We were on the first floor right next to the main entrance. The room we had reeked of chlorine from the swimming pool. So bad that we had headaches. There was a 1.5 inch gap from the door to the floor so you can see people walk past the room we were staying in. Every time someone went past the room with a luggage cart you could hear it on the tiles as if there was no door. You could hear the people talk casually in the next room over and they were not talking that loud at at all, so that means you can hear EVERYTHING! You could hear every single toilet flush and every shower turn on. You could hear people walk across their rooms on the 2nd floor and they weren't being obnoxious. It just means the building was built horrible. For pool towels they handed out towels that are hand towel size. Try drying off with that! As for the indoor swimming pool. There was built up film built up on the walls of the hot tub and pool. Definitely not coming back.
