The fish chorrillo is one of the best fish dishes I have ever had. Good vegetarian choices. Chicken is not great. Good sangria made with Chilean wines. The biscuit makes a good dessert after a great meal. Also very nice Peruvian paintings to enjoy...

This restaurant is a fast-food relative of LA’s El Pollo Inka restaurants, which feature authentic Peruvian foods. And what delightful fast food it is. If you’re willing to sacrifice some ambiance, or take the food back to your hotel, you’ll enjoy generous portions of made-to-order, delicious, and unusual offerings, for $6 – 8 per person. No surprise that this place is popular with locals. The core of the menu is open-fire roasted chicken, subtly and deliciously spiced. ¼ chicken will cost you $4.99, but that includes a cup of cilantro-chicken-rice soup and 2 side dishes. Or order chicken a la carte for $2.50 - $3. Most locals get a salad, simple but pleasing with a light Italian-style dressing. We added plantains, which I recommend, though a whole order is a lot for one person. Unlike other plantains I’ve had, they’re soft and sweet rather than hard and starchy. They’re fried up till partially caramelized, and great for a side or “dessert.” We also tried the yucca, more like a starchy fried potato, and the sweet potato fries, which were lighter but less sweet than the plantains. You’ll get a huge amount of fries, so plan accordingly. Steamed veggies are previously frozen, but we ordered them anyway to increase our intake of produce. You can order extra sides, such as rice, beans, French fries, corn, or extra soup. If you’re feeding 4 or more, there’s a whole roasted chicken for $13.85, which includes rolls and soup for 4, and other large-scale meals. My husband ordered Lomo Saltado ($6.75, served with rice and French fries), a pan-fried mixture of steak strips, onions, and tomatoes, deliciously spiced. They make this with chicken as an alternative. Also on the menu are chicken salad, chicken rice, sandwiches, and salchipapa (sausage and potatoes). Only a few dessert offerings, but you probably won’t need them, especially if you get the plantains. We tried the alfajores anyway, mini-shortbread sandwich cookies with chocolate pudding filling. Excellent. In addition to the usual fountain drinks, they serve Inka Kola, which apparently packs a large caffeine dose, and other South American sodas. We went here twice recently and found the service very friendly and accommodating, even on a rainy LA Saturday night when people were lined up at both the drive-up window and the counter. Speaking of the drive-up, if you like good food and bargain prices, but can’t stand fast food ambiance, you can pick up your food to-go without even entering the restaurant. Personally I like to hang out and rub elbows with the locals. It’s very clean, on both visits we saw workers sweeping the floors inobtrusively between customers. The only way you can go wrong here is by ordering more food than you can eat. We did that.
