Where to eat Mexican food in Council Bluffs: The Best Restaurants and Bars

October 4, 2019 Giuseppe Pratt

Find out what Mexican restaurants to try in Council Bluffs. Council Bluffs is a city in and the county seat of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. The city is the most populous in Southwest Iowa, and a principal city in the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from Omaha, Nebraska. Council Bluffs was known, until at least 1853, as Kanesville. It was the historic starting point of the Mormon Trail. Kanesville is also the northernmost anchor town of the other emigrant trails, since there was a steam powered boat to ferry their wagons, and cattle, across the Missouri River.

Hook & Lime

Casual dining with a chef-driven menu of tacos, tortas, and small plates specializing in Mexican seafood. Our bar offerings include Tequila-centric craft cocktails, tequila flights, margaritas, and beer.

This is a neat little place with lots of outdoor seating. Not a lot of menu choices, but what they do have is interesting. We had the salsa trio, tacos and tortas. The carnitas was super good, and the brisket was even better. For fish lovers, the smoked trout tacos are better than the shrimp ones. Margaritas are on the rocks, not frozen, and they have many tequila and flavor choices. Wait staff was really friendly and helpful. We would definitely eat here again!

Just finished eating here and have to say we are disappointed. I know we shouldn’t expect much from Mexican food in Iowa but we heard it was good from nearby hotel desk lady. Enchiladas were small a completely covered with sauce that was just soggy. Good totally average. I’d say go across the street to another place.

This is a bright and cheery restaurant, located on the fringe of the Old Market. They offer a wide range of Southwestern and Tex-Mex cuisine. You start with complimentary chips and salsa. Everything we had was very tasty. I liked the veggie options, while my nephew opted for quesadillas. The portions are large and prices fair. Service is friendly and efficient. Recommended.
