As of the 2010 census it had a population of 5,522. The community was named for the cascade in Wappinger Creek. A portion of the village is in the town of Wappinger, and the other part is in the town of Poughkeepsie, with Wappinger Creek forming the dividing line between the towns.

A bit of history...years ago, there was a very family-oriented eatery at this location called Frank's Italian Restaurant. It was a great place with basic, traditional Italian food, always served hot and delicious, and with great service and reasonable prices. At some point the original Frank's was torn down and a new, upscale restaurant went up in it's place, but still called Frank's. The menu, service, and prices all changed. You still got a great meal at Frank's, but they were clearly trying to attract a different kind of patron.Fast forward to today - there are new owners and the place is now called Bella Italiana. My wife and I decided to try the place out for dinner. The parking lot was almost empty and the place was dead, which should have been our first clue. We were seated quickly and placed our order. I chose the Rigatoni Bolognese and opted for the Italian Wedding Soup instead of the salad. The soup I got was greasy and had no taste, definitely not like the Italian Wedding Soup my grandmother used to make. The server noticed I wasn't eating it and offered to replace it with a salad, which I accepted. My rigatoni also had no taste to it. My wife ordered the Chicken Parmigiana with spaghetti; she enjoyed the chicken but the pasta was served undercooked - not "al dente", but undercooked. The prices are nowhere near in line with what you get. Maybe this place will improve with time, but it will be a while before I eat here again, not with so many other better choices for Italian nearby.

This place has great pizza! No doubt about it. Their entree's are good , but not great! I recommend the margarita pizza and the baked ziti. The place is small and not very cozy to dine in. Be aware, if you order pizza for delivery on Friday night around 6, it seems like they pre-make the pizzas and then just warm them up and deliver them because of the large volume or take outs Friday nights. I know the difference from a fresh pizza and a warmed up pizza .

Have you ever liked a place but not been very excited by it, and thought that if you gave it another shot it could become a favorite...like a "sleeper" movie? That's how I feel about Mamma Mia's. It seemed really average, but I had only one, limited, experience, and I got a hunch it might have something remarkably good to find.I've driven past it for years. Their street-side sign changes every week and shows interesting sounding pasta and seafood dishes, and very (almost suspiciously!) low prices, like $10.99 for an entree. The small building doesn't look like much on the outside and I've never noticed a lot of cars in the (small) parking lot.I stopped by to pick up take-out pizzas because of the "2 large pizzas for $16.95" sign out front. I ordered one plain and one with two half-toppings, and the total came to around $23.00. At the time, I hadn't remembered the price displayed on the sign, but I asked about the total because it was unexpectedly high. I am pretty sure I recall correctly that I was told that the two pizzas were $18.99, plus the charge for the toppings plus tax. I didn't realize the discrepancy until the next day when I drove by and looked again at the sign and saw that the sign did say 2 pizzas for $16.95. In any event, even at around $23 the price was OK for two pizzas of that size, and the pizzas tasted pretty good. It wasn't NYC style pizza with thin crust and browned cheese. It was more the "old fashioned American" style I'm used to getting in areas that are not well known for good pizza, and in an area like that these pizzas would have been very good. The sauce was sweet, the dough was soft and on the thick side of average, with a noticeably nice flavor, and the cheese was not rubbery at all. Overall, it was good and if this restaurant existed when I was a child upstate where the pizzerias all made bland, tough-doughy, dismal pizzas with plastic-tasting fake cheese, it would have been a favorite! In Hopewell Junction today, where there are multiple other options for definitely excellent pizza (La Torretta and Tiramisu, among other good contenders), I will choose another restaurant when I get a craving for pizza.At the rear of the restaurant is a bakery. A sign states that the baker is a Culinary Institue of America graduate...those guys are everywhere in this region! The selection on display was small and looked really standard. Round cakes with typical simple decoration, and some small tarts and average-looking cookies. The things looked 'dry' to my eye, and didn't tempt me to try one, so I can't comment on their quality or flavor.The two persons at the register was very amiable. We had a nice chat as I picked up the pizzas and that left a good impression. I was also offered a bunch of "free bowling" coupons for a local bowling alley, which was very friendly and I appreciated very much.The dining room inside is small in a cozy way. Everything inside and out was clean and appeared well cared for. It was dark inside and the decoration seemed reservedly old-fashioned in a comforting way. I started fantasizing and formed an impression of a small family-run restaurant that might have very well-made fresh food and a clientele mostly of older people who have been coming there for years because they want good and inexpensive food. I could be wrong. However, I'm interested enough to want to return to try the dinners of Italian and Portuguese foods. The menu listed many interesting-sounding plates with several seafood choices.The restaurant is notable because it serves Portuguese food, and not many places around here do, to my knowledge. I can easily see myself being a regular if the Italian and Portuguese dinners are delicious.So, overall: average but intriguing and possibly a "hidden gem"!

Our quest for excellent Shrimp Scampi Pizza continues which led us to Leo's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria. Not too many pizzerias offer shrimp scampi pizza, so trying Leo's was a must. Note that the restaurant and the pizzeria are separate restaurants, each with their own entrance although the kitchen is shared. This was our first visit here and we were informed that one can only order pizza in the more casual pizzeria side of this establishment. Everything else on the menu is available on the pizzeria side, but pizza cannot be ordered on the restaurant side. The shrimp scampi pizza was good, but not great. Garlic is an integral component of anything "scampi", and surprisingly there wasn't enough garlic on this pizza. This was brought home by the addition of some garlic powder -- which should have been quite redundant but was not. Unfortunate. Our table also ordered the Pasta Putanesca, another favorite that is not commonly offered. Leo's did a better job with this dish as it was loaded with capers, black olives, bacon, green onions in a rich marinara sauce. We may return to Leo's, but the search for excellent Shrimp Scampi Pizza continues.

First visit. Food was excellent, wine was excellent, service was superb. We took Dan's recommendations and had no regrets. Specials were wonderful. I highly recommend it. Space is a bit tight, and room is loud. Nevertheless, it was not uncomfortable. In an area filled with wonderful restaurants, it is hard to choose a favorite, but we'll be back here again. Go early, however, unless you don't mind waiting. Bar is nice but it was packed when we left.

It is a very large pizza place. They serve slices at lunch. The lasagna pizza is amazing and one slice will fill you for lunch. They heat it quick and are very friendly.

We love this place. The food (everything on the menu) is delicious. The service impeccable. The only downside is there is no inconspicuous/subtle waiting area so the entire time youâre eating it is under the watchful yearning eyes of diners that are impatiently waiting for a table in the small 14 table place. Go anyway during not so busy times.

I and my wife did not like the main dish very much. I had the Spaghetti alla vongole, a dish I usually love. And the sauce and vongole were good. But the pasta was cheap pasta from a box and overcooked. I definitely can do a better job at home. My wife told me that her chicken was dry and the pasta boring. The bread, when it finally came (the server seemed a bit overwhelmed) was very good. If you order wine by the glass you get a large glass full. But as with the dishes it is quantity not quality. The restaurant was a bit loud in the beginning, better after some people left. The atmosphere is more functional than cozy.Overall, I do not recommend this place, if you are looking for good food. But if you are starving, this might be your place.

Lived in the area my entire life but this was first time at Longobardi's...so dark every time we pass by we always thought it was another closed pizza joint. Took relatives to dinner there since someone told hubby it was good. First thing we noticed were the highly inflated prices for a pizza joint. Bread and 3 pieces of bruschetta were brought to the table. We ordered fried calamari for an appetizer. All rings and they were so tough and chewy. Worse fried calamari we have ever had. One person had stuffed shells with meatballs. The two meatballs were huge but tasteless and she said she has had much better Italian food. Two others had spaghetti with marinara sauce. Simple enough but spaghetti was overcooked and the sauce had chunks of tomato and had too much acidity. Here is the reason for only one star. I went to ladies room before we left and much to my surprise the one bottle of soap there was EMPTY!!! All I could think of was how many of the female employees had used the facilities without washing their hands!!!!! I could not get out of there fast enough. Thankfully I always have a small hand sanitizer attached to my purse!! No, we will not be back due to the highly inflated prices for ordinary Italian food and the seemingly unsanitary restroom. There are too many really good Italian restaurants in the area that serve much better food at more reasonable prices.

Something has changed in Aroma. I've been there at least a dozen times over the last couple of years and unfortunately I won't be returning after this visit. The short story-the entree's didn't arrive until 7:40 pm on a 5:30 pm reservation!! And although management walked by our empty table numerous times, no one even noticed! We arrived on time at 5:30 pm and were quickly seated. We received our glasses of water. Nothing else until 6 pm when I finally asked for a basket of bread. This should have been my first clue. The bread didn't arrive until 6:10pm. At which time I asked to place the appetizer order. I was told that they were too busy to take separate orders for appetizers. Ok fine! At 6:25 our appetizer and dinner orders were taken. 35 minutes later, at 7:00 pm, we asked if the appetizers were coming! At this point we have now been seated for 1.5 hours. There were at least 9 tables around us and all had received their appetizers, dinners and some were on dessert. Appetizers come and are picked up from the table at 7:15 or so.. At 7:30pm - we ask where our entree's are. "We're very busy" we're told. "Five minutes" we were told. But by now every table around had appetizers, dinner, dessert and left! And most of those people came in after us. The 7:30pm crowd was now being seated and we are still waiting for our entrees. During this entire time the manager and hostess, as well as the waitress, walked by this circular table sitting in the middle of the room with a party of 5 and NO ONE every even noticed that we were sitting there for 1.5 hours; most of the time with just glasses of water in front of us. Finally at 7:40 they told us our entree's are on their way. At this point its too late to go anywhere else and we are all sooo hungry. 3 of the 5 entree's arrive at 7:40! Then 1 at 7:45 and finally the last arrives at 7:48pm. For a 5:30 reservation?? Seriously?? All the apologies in the world cannot make up for this! All the time they claimed they were very busy but that doesn't make sense when all the other tables around us were being turned! The truth is that the waitress probably never put in our order at all!! Furthermore, management, who had walked by us a dozen times, didn't even notice. Shame on you Aroma! If I'm paying top dollar for a restaurant I expect top service and good quality of food. I got neither! Yes something has changed at Aroma and its not good!
