We discovered this superb cafe last month so when friends were visiting the area we couldn't wait to introduce them to this incredible find - though as it would be New Year's Eve we thought we'd better see if they had a table. I messaged them, they replied very promptly and we met up there. The food, as it had been on the first occasion, was excellent. The simpIe but INCREDIBLY tasty roasted potatoes with a mayonnaise dip which I had as a starter was just yummy and my main course curry with rice and a mint yogurt on the side was excellent. I can't recall the name of the dish our friend's wife had but she was raving so much about how good it was that we all had a taste of it - and it was! We had a large cafetiere of coffee which served the four of us and were astounded to see the price on the bill was so modest. It worked out at less than £1 a cup (or beaker, as we all had) and I haven't paid so little for years! The next day we told the farmer who had first introduced us to Jim's that we had been again and how superb it had been again. He said he'd heard a rumour that Jim was thinking of closing the place except for special occasions as they had been somewhat dispirited by some negative folk. Oh don't! We've waited years to find a place like this and it would be a shame if they were put off by nit-picking or gluttony customers. The four of us had starters and main courses, extra chapattis, a litre carafe of wine and coffees all round. The bottom line was less than £65 for freshly prepared, imaginative food and a welcome change from the standard vegetarian offerings of cheese pie or risotto of other restaurants and pubs in the area.

Its been a while since our last trip because it appears to have had a major redecoration which seems to have led to price increases but when one compares the portion size and overall quality of the product to larger chain offerings such as Wetherby Whalers much smaller potions then it is still value for money. Service is still pretty good too. This is the place to go if you want to combine a pleasant lunch with a trip to the much larger Boundary Mill shopping emporium at the other end of the car park. Made the journey across the still snow laden hills and now flooded roads in fog from Yorkshire all the more pleasurable.

Another fabulous meal at this lovely warm restaurant. There are lovely open fires to warm you. The views are spectacular especially as it had been snowing. The staff are very polite and courteous. Nothing is too much trouble. The food is fabulous and the portions are generous. I had scampi and my other half had the salmon with a lovely herb crust and to his delight crispy skin. Will definitely visit again

Haven`t been here for years, then for one reason or another have been three times in as many weeks. First was just a snack lunch, then evening meal with two other couples, then a meeting function with pie, peas and chips.
The staff are friendly and helpful, the food on the good side, but in my opinion a bit overpriced for pub grub - home made meat pie with chips and peas was around £15. The pie was good, plenty of lean meat, just a bit pricey. I also think the menu is a bit limited and could be expanded. Same applies to the wine list.

The Alma Inn Restaurant

We recently went to the Alma for the Croquet Dinner. It was lovely. We had the dining room set to for the occasion. There was only about 16 of us but we were treated very well. The room was so countrified and the atmosphere was one of cosiness. The room was very warm unlike some places where you can feel the nip. The food was enjoyed by all and we weren’t tied to one menu. There was a special menu for the night and an a la carte one. We could choose whatever. I had the duck spring rolls for starter and the lamb rump for main course. The lamb was divine. Cooked just the way I liked it. It was served with hot pot potatoes on a bed of spinach. The potatoes weren’t cooked through which was my only gripe. Others on my table had the pie and peas which was a plate pie of beef mince and served with a sweet red cabbage and mushy peas. Smoked Haddock served on a bed of creamy potatoes with an egg on top which was good. Two others had the lamb rump and one had a prawn and shrimp thing which they enjoyed, possibly a starter as a main. One had the fish pie which they said was good but would have been better if some separate veg was included. The host was very attentive and shared some Slivovitz with us after the meal. The staff were attentive but not in your face. The photo shows the members who won the Longman Cup which is a prestigious National cup for Pendle and Craven Croquet club. Come and play at Earby.

Party of 4 adults.
Chicken wings missing from American Platter, quite a big omission!
Ice cream missing from profiteroles with cream and ice cream.
Both errors rectified when pointed out, but quite big gaps on the plate! Surely, should have been spotted by staff.
When you order, you’re given a choice of potatoes, but be warned if you pick anything other than chips you’ll be charged an extra 99p. Don’t mind paying this, but please don’t describe the potato items in a way that makes them all sound the same cost when you order.
The decor is quite nice and the staff okay, but this place isn’t great value and add in the above and it becomes poor. Food is only average too, not the big flavours we were hoping for.

I had been hearing rave reviews from this pub, and used to frequent years ago.
Staff are great, food was ok (as you would expect from a traditional free house).
I also wondered why the specials menu only starts at 6pm?
Choice of beers good and place is dog friendly.
I personally wasn’t blown away by the food (not a criticism) as I had heard from friends, but it is good and honest pub grub in a lovely setting, will defiantly try again.
Does exactly what a traditional pub should do.

The White Swan

The white swan at Fence is a traditional local pub that just happens to serve food, real ales & wines so fine that you will probably do a little dance of delight when you sample them. Backed by Timothy Taylors, fronted by team Turners with cellar queens Liv & Lou plus the boy wonder Tom Parker in the kitchen, we've got a veritable dream team going on. It will be love at first sight, smell & savour.

I reviewed this shortly after it opened and gave it 5 stars and on subsequent visits have never had cause to change this however my last visit was disappointing for several reasons.
We booked latish so weren't surprised that we had to arrive early. Only 4 tables were filled when we arrived - and the same number when we left 2 hours later so there was little atmosphere and we could easily have been booked in later.
The menu is (as we knew) small and in the past there has only been one price - as their website indicates. No - there is only one meal at this price everything else is more expensive. This made the price more like a major city than our rural area where we have many excellent eateries. The food was delicious although I thought not quite as good as on previous visits - and there was no vegetarian option. As others have commented chips as an addition were pushed - at 40p per chip I'm not surprised.
When the bill came there were two items on it we had not had,
Sorry, disappointing and wont be rushing back./

Having been a Trip Advisor Reviewer for a long time, some might comment I always have a lot to say, but regarding this very "plush" restaurant attached to Boundary Mill, I'm afraid on this occasion my findings and comments are brief. Food is pretentious, a little greedy, not particularly well cooked and no one on our very first occasion asked if everything was ok, (which was very much, not the case). Sorry, the experience did not march the lovely decor etc.....definitely not on our list for a return.
