Fowey (/ˈfɔɪ/ ( listen) FOY; Cornish: Fowydh, meaning 'Beech Trees') is a small town, civil parish and cargo port at the mouth of the River Fowey in south Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The town has been in existence since before 1300; the estuary of the River Fowey forms a natural harbour which enabled the town to become an important trading centre. Privateers also made use of the sheltered harbourage. The Lostwithiel and Fowey Railway brought China clay here for export.

Fowey Estuary

Reviewed By PJaneS - Bath, United Kingdom

Fowey is delightful, busy in the summer and popular with tourists, but absolutely charming. Wander up and down (steeply) to get there, enjoying the views and the old buildings. Potter along to Readymoney Cove (and view houses of celebrities!) or take the ferry to Polruan. Or sit and watch the traffic up and down the estuary and watch the world go by with a coffee or an ice cream or a Cornish Pasty!

South West Coast Path - St Catherine's Castle, Fowey

A short 2.6 mile walk on the South West Coast Path around a strategic headland on the River Fowey, used to defend the estuary and harbour for over 2000 years. With terrific sea views, the walk passes a castle built by Henry VIII modified during the Crimean War and Second World War. It also visits 2 small, secluded coves before heading up a woodland path past Daphne du Maurier's 'Manderley'.

Walked the South West Coast path from Fowey to Polkerris and took in St Catherine's Castle as part of the walk - well worth the stop to view these ruins.

St Catherine's Castle

Reviewed By PaulM13324

Castle is not huge but has great views of the River Fowey and across to Polruan. You definitely need walking shoes as the path can be muddy. Readymoney Cove is a quaint spot with a nice little beach. Main observation is that once you leave the car park, directional signs to the castle appear to be non existent. Keep an eye out for the English Heritage flag which gives you an idea of where you need to go. Also, it would have been helpful to have some more info boards at the castle to show how the ruins may have looked originally and to explain what the remains are.

Saints Way

Reviewed By K567 - Cambridge, United Kingdom

We walked the Fowey to Polkerris part of The Saints Way and carried on the SW coastal.path to make it a good 7 mile circular walk. The paths on this stretch are well marked but I recommend googling Gribbin Head walk. This circular walk is listed on the SW Coastal Path website and contains a detailed OS map and instructions which is useful as some signs simply have arrows or public footpath, as opposed to The Saints Way'. We walked it on a mixed weather day but it was still really enjoyable, with great views, particularly if you combine it with the coastal path. I loved that the paths throughout are cordoned off from any livestock (taking the detour around to Gribbin Head) and were good underfoot - potential for being a bit slippy near Fowey but not too bad really with reasonable footwear. Undulating but not overly strenuous. Lovely!
