What to do and see in Manchester, United Kingdom (UK): The Best Places and Tips

July 18, 2017 Brain Ambrose

Famed for its soccer team and music scene, which has produced the likes of the Smiths and Oasis, this center for sports and the arts is a down-to-earth and friendly city. The so-called Capital of the North has overcome industrial decline, bombing (in WWII and by the IRA) to become a confident and cosmopolitan city of well over two million. It is well served by a bus and light rail network. Top attractions include the Lowry art complex, arcade Affleck's Palace and Canal Street gay village.

The John Rylands Library

Welcome to The John Rylands Library, one of the world's finest collections of rare books and manuscripts. The John Rylands Library is part of The University of Manchester. Please note that we open at 12noon on Mondays and Sundays

The architecture of the library dates back to the 1890s and is really fascinating offering many interesting vistas for photography. There is obviously a vast collection of books too that are beautifully housed. The library also has Exhibitions from time to time on various subjects and I was lucky enough to see one on colour, illustrated with some wonderful books.
It's a gem of a place, but it isn't for everybody; certainly, young children would not be interested.
As a bonus, it's free too.

We went on a guided tour of the old buildings are on this site. Whilst the tour guide was not a strong architectural historian, (more a historian), the buildings are fantastic and well worth seeing, particularly the library with wonderful artefacts on display. Very peaceful, what would be expected at a site so close to central Manchester

Come and visit the home of the Manchester City Football Club and explore the heritage through the unique memorabilia and interactive displays, reliving the greatest moments and discovering what makes City the Club that it is today. Take in the view of the Etihad from the Tunnel Club Seating area and visit one of the Club's superb hospitality areas. Take your seat in the press room, sit behind the press desk and through your own eyes, experience the feelings and emotions Pep Guardiola and the first team players feel when conducting a press conference. Get warmed up in the players warm up room and then venture into the inner sanctum of the dressing room. Sit in your favourite player’s seat before heading to tunnel. Stand in the tunnel and experience the roar of 55,000 supporters, then walk pitch side and take in the panoramic view of the Etihad Stadium. Sit in Pep Guardiola’s seat in the dugout and feel the big match excitement.

On Friday night I went to see the preview of ‘Frankenstein’. The play is very faithful to the original book whilst interjecting some very humorous one liners, the atmosphere was literally ‘electric’. The play contained some wonderful special effects and real scare moments, it was a visually stunning performance. Most of the acting was wonderful, the captain played by Ryan Gage was superb, however for me by far the strongest performance though was the actual creature played by Harry Atwell, he commanded the stage and played a larger than life monster, he was truly brilliant. The only weak performance in my opinion was unfortunately the lead role of Victor Frankenstein played by Shane Zaza. Although he played the tortured soul part well he seemed to rush through and mumble quite a few of the more important lines. One can only hope he slows down the Delivery and increases the volume on the finished production. The other supporting actors were all very good, many playing multiple roles. Shanaya Rafaat and Colin Ryan were both extremely good, a real joy to watch.
The play was one of the better productions I’ve seen at the Royal Exchange, a visual feast and I would heartily recommend it. Please note though there are some gory bits and the play comes with a 14 plus age advisory.

It's really just a functioning library in a really pretty old building. We only checked out the music floor, which was impressive enough with its collection of books and sheets as well as the pianos to practice on, but the through gem is the Reading room directly under the dome, which is definitely worth a sneak peek!

The Manchester Museum

The Manchester Museum is home to an array of treasures from the natural world and the many cultures it is home to. Highlights include a T.rex and fossils of other pre-historic creatures, ancient Egyptian artefacts and live amphibians and reptiles. You can handle objects from the collection, take part in hands-on activities or enjoy a glass of wine of cup of coffee whilst exploring the latest ideas in science, culture and the arts.

I recently visited the Manchester Museum and found it a very enjoyable experience. There were a number of Exhibitions available including: Ancient Egypt, Manchester's archaeology and Pre-history (of which Stan the T-Rex was a natural highlight!). If you enjoy taxidermy animals then this is the place for you! A particular favourite of mine was the exhibition on Egyptian Mummies, including those from the Ptolemaic and Roman period. Displays on the use of fakes/copies/reproductions was also an interesting view and why these are used.
Overall, I spent a couple of hours taking in the museum, which was free to enter, and would recommend a visit there whilst in Manchester.
