11 including 2 children for family lunchtime birthday meal. Booked in advance (advisable). A pub which centres on decent food including a good hot carvery with - when we were there - beef, Turkey, pork + Yorkshire puds, gravy, sauces and at least five veg. Although we were there for four hours we were never pressed or hastened to move on. Al a carte menu and specials available. Clearly popular with plenty of return trade. Full bar with several draft beers. Staff friendly and happily served up a brought Birthday cake. Would return. Not fine dining but solid fare. Easy to reach location with a reasonable amount of parking.

Really happy with the lunch we had here. The service was great (very friendly and helpful waitress) and we all loved our food. There are some lovely walks around here so this is a fantastic place to come for lunch afterwards, particularly if you have...MoreThank you for sharing your feedback. We are always happy to see walkers, especially when you bring your dogs along too! We look forward to seeing you again soon.

The Greyfriar

Reviewed By Natasha P - UK

Having read reviews recently, which were all good, we were looking forward to lunch on Saturday with our friends. Our table was booked for 12.30, we arrived early about Midday, and ordered some drinks, we advised that we could sit at the table early, which was great. Our drinks did take about 15 minutes to arrive, but it was busy, so we were OK about that. When the drinks did arrive, we said could we order the Wine and Food. The Waitress took our Wine order, but never came back for the Food Order. In between this, she bought the wine, it was White, we pointed out we ordered Red, she was not happy about swapping it, then the Water, we ordered Tap, the water was in a sealed Bottle, I asked if this was Tap, she said No, and then was not happy about changing it. She never came back for our Food order. We then asked a waiter if we could order, as we have by now been waiting over half an hour for our food to be ordered. He was very apologetic, he took our order, and advised that as the Pub was busy, there could be a delay. We said this was fine. Finally after 45 minutes our Starters arrived. There was an apology when the food arrived. The Starters were good. When we had finished 3 out of the 4 plates were cleared by the Waitress, but she left the 4th, we had to ask the Waiter for it to be cleared. During this time, we ordered more Wine, after 20 minutes of waiting, we asked the Waiter if we could have the Wine, he checked with the Waitress and she said she had been too busy to put the order through and get the Wine, the Waiter apologised again, and bought the wine straight over. Eventually after about another 45 minutes from finishing our Starters the Main courses is arrived, they were a little disappointing. 2 of us had the Halibut, the piece was very small, and over cooked, and came with a fondant potato, 2 cabbage leaves, and a butter sauce. Its all tasted quite nice, apart from the fish being small and overcooked and lack of vegetables. My friend had the pie, but the vegetables, were roasted, and quite black round the edges. We didn't complain as by this time , we had gone past it, and couldn't face another wait. We turned down Pudding and Coffee, as it was now about 2.45, and again, we didn't know how long we would have to wait. Yes the Pub was busy, but surely this is good, yes, we were advised about the wait, but I think the time we waited was excessive. The Food was OK, but not great, again I don't know if there were issues in the kitchen on this day, as other reviews had all been pretty good. The big issue was the service, this really was extremely poor. I also must point out about the Ladies Toilets, it was a wet day, and OK the floor can get dirty (the toilet and washbasin I must add were clean) but and this was not down to the weather, wall and windows in the Ladies Toilet really need a good clean. We live within walking distance to the Pub, and we were looking forward to visiting again, but based on Saturdays experience, I don't think we will again, which is such a shame. I have written many reviews on trip advisor, and I would say about 98% of then have been good reports, I hate writing a bad one, as I appreciate that other people will read this, and it can reflect badly on the Pub, but I must review how we found our experience, and it wasn't good.

Without booking, but just after opening at 5pm, we ate in the small dining area, Seating 16 at most. Service was quick and friendly and the portions generous, hot and delicious. Both starters and mains were chicken based and with non-alcoholic drinks (they do not do alcohol) the cost of some £45 including tip was reasonable. Beware that although a Market Street address it is in fact in a side road just off Market street which may be known to the locals but wasn't to us! Happy to recommend.

The Sun Inn

Hidden away down a little lane on the edge of Bentworth Village in Hampshire, The Sun Inn is a very pretty, flower-adorned and unspoilt rural free-house dating back to the 16th century. Brick and board floors are laid with a rustic mix of scrubbed pine tables, benches and settles and the original beams are hung with sparkling horse brasses. Walls are adorned with plates and prints depicting the history of the village of Bentworth and it is surely one of the most atmospheric and authentic pubs to be found in Hampshire.

Cosy, historical country gastro-pub on the edges of Alton, Hampshire with amazing fresh prepared food and great beer. Surrounded by four Gardens and cottages French Horn is a perfect place to relax and enjoy summer days. During cold winter we light up the fire places inside.. We are child and dog friendly. Chalets to stay in also available.

Wanted to try here again with its new management and not disappointed. Limited menu but good fresh dishes, slightly different from the norm. Crabcake starter a wee bit bland but the veggie tartlet was excellent whilst the chicken stuffed with feta was lovely albeit I found the sauce more gravy than sauce. Good zucchini but at £4.95 a portion way over priced!
Good beers TT, Tribute and Doom and service was fine. The bar area is not the best so try and eat in the restaurant area if you can.
Prices for the food are a bit on the high side for what is, in essence, a pub so they will have to keep the meal standards very high to keep those margins! Oh and please serve the meals on a plate not on slate or boards!

We enjoyed a superb lunch there this week. We started with the salt and pepper squid (we shared but not too much for one) and followed up with the duck and the baked cheesecake (with spiced apple), then shared the filo wrapped baked apple. Every course was beautifully cooked and bursting with flavor. We washed it down with a lovely red from Portugal. We have tried most pubs in this part of Hampshire and the Royal Oak was by far the best. Just sad it took us so long to find this great restaurant.

TripAdvisor Review Nov 02, 2014: 'This is a gem of a small pub. What the owners have done is so obvious and apparently simple, that you can't but help wonder why more don't do it. Make the place homely, relaxed and inviting. Get a professional in the kitchen who knows what they are doing, has an abundance of pride and enthusiasm and wants to provide fantastic food. Put a team together who enjoy looking after customers. Source drinks that taste great, not just the run of the mill okay, that will do, but great. Set prices at a level that when the bill comes, you feel value has been delivered.'

I've eaten lunch a couple of times here now and it's honest home cooked quality pub grub. Pies are great, with accompanying well seasoned mash and perfectly cooked veg. Pride is taken here- portions are quite huge. Perhaps a wider choice might be good, especially of salads and healthier choices but what they do they do well. To be applauded

In Front Of The Jane Austen's House

Reviewed By HilaireH116 - Alexandria, Virginia

After visiting Jane Austen's house, we crossed the street to enjoy a delightful cream tea at Cassandra's. Her tea room is charming. She has a lovely and diverse collection of tea cups suspended from the ceiling that are fun to look at. My husband had the red winter spice tea and I had the currant, both of which were great. In fact, we enjoyed the winter spice tea so much that we purchased some before leaving. We ordered fruit scones, and had clotted cream and a lovely pot of jam. The scones were perfect. The staff are gracious, and the service is very good. This is a great spot for afternoon tea, lunch or a quick snack. Cassandra's also offers ice cream and candy treats.
