meat-avoiders, alert: do you see this magnificence!?! it is alpine cheese... (....too banal a word! how about, "bovine heavenliness")....baked to perfection, with local free-range pickles, plus pickled free-range baby onions & boiled, free-range, gluten-free, grass-fed potatoes to complete the experience. the locals are content to call it "raclette": translated into atheism it is "walhalla on earth".i have now already made enough decisions for you. your remaining work involves calculating how much bovine heavenliness gets committed to how much potatoed & pickled goodness, ....plus of course, just how many days of abstinence do you want to invest before arrival, to reserve volume?footnote: carnivores: they are nice enough to offer options to delay your extinction too!merci.

I ate here as part of a group. The menu had been arranged beforehand. It was very disappointing. The soup was tasteless. The roast beef was as tough as leather and the sauce was industrial which went well with the instant mashed potatoes. Only the carrots tasted good, but over cooked. The dessert was a joke. Bowls of double cream were placed along the table and we were served two meringues directly out of a package which was probably purchased at Prodega. No fruit, no color, no imagination. I drank no alcohol and still paid CHF 40.00 for a terribly deceiving lunch. I'm sure the management will say it was our fault: "You ate later than announced" "You chose the wrong menu." I'm sure a dinner for two, eating venison would be fine here. But why are the standards so low for a group outing?

Busy restaurant/bar (you are best to reserve a table for lunch in advance) with a great list of available drinks and a limited food menu for lunch. Service is friendly and efficient. The food itself is presented nicely but the quality is more in line with an average pub. A good atmosphere makes this a great bar for a drink.

The evening we went had a special menu for St Nicholas (Soirée du Père Fouettard), a five course event for 92CHF plus wine. We were sat at the end of a table with 8 others from another party: not ideal but not a problem either. The atmosphere was relaxed and good with a DJ playing music at a volume which is not disruptive at all.The menu was well designed and the food cooked and presented very well. The only flat spot being that the poached egg in the coup was still cool having been pre-cooked earler in the day and not warmed up enough. However the taset was excellent. The wine list is not overwhelming and all wines served are available by the glass. Judging from one example where I know the retail price, the mark up is 2.5 to 3 which is on the low end by Swiss standards.Service was really very good. All look to be students. All in all an excellent eveninng . We will definitely be back.A word to the wise: parking will be a problem if Fri-Son next door is open with a popular event. We had no problem as it had not yet opened when we arrived..

We went with high expectations. The place is much bigger than we had realised. We had the surprise menu. The presentation was excellent as was the service. The cooking, however, was not very imaginative and two of the courses were almost cold. The wine prices are typical for Switzerland and I admit to disliking paying CHF85 for a bottle I can buy for CHF22. Others have said La Cène is the finest restaurant in Fribourg. I respectfully submit it is nowhere close to being in the same league as Ayer or Trois Tours. I doubt we will be back.

Yesterday was Monday. On Mondays most restaurants about Fribourg are closed, so I had to make do with McDonald's. It wasn't too bad. Today I decided to treat myself, so I made a reservation at the RdHdV which is mentioned favourably in the Michelin red guide and is ranked the second best restaurant in Fribourg by Trip advisor. It started well, I was seated at an excelent table on the lovely balcony and my Campari Soda arrived promptly (though without a lemon). From here everything went downhill. I could analyse the food in length but it would be simply throwing my pearls at the pigs. Sufice it to say that both my plates were simply, plainly and definitely bad. They were crowded with various bad looking and bad tasting stuff. The choice of the stuff on the plate made neither rhyme nor reason. The ingredients were all second rate and the whole assemblage was precooked and warmed before serving, probabely in a microwave oven. Nothing, but nothing, tasted anything but foul. Since they had no half bottles of wine I drank wine by the glass. There was practicely no choice and both wines I had were bad. On my way back I passed the McDonald's where I dined yesterday. Today I payed ten times more, yesterday I enjoyed it ten times more. How is 1:100 for price quality ratio? Never mind, there are and will be bad restaurants, but how can so many people eat such bad food and then attest in writing that it was excelent?
