Le Chamechaude

The first day in St Pierre de Chartreuse we walk to St Hughes for lunch at Le Chamechaude. It's an easy walk and it's an enjoyable lunch. A good value three course menu, featuring the dish of the day, a chilled beer and bottle of Cote du Rhone and you know all is right with the world! The food in winter is hearty mountain fare served inside in the dining room and bar. Summer sees lighter dishes which can be served outside where you can view the mountain that dominates the area and gives this restaurant its name. All dishes are simple, tasty and reflect the local area and yes you can always have a fondue. The wines are of a good standard including the local favourites and all are at very fair pricesWhether its snowing or sunny I'm sure your visit to St Hughes and its famous church will be made more enjoyable by a visit to Le Chamechaude.

Isabelle and Eric suggest traditional and mountain dishes, based on local products. Enjoy our frogs' legs (by reservation), taste the real Savoyard fondue or enjoy our Grilled Fillet with seasonal sauce. A menu of the day is offered from Monday to Friday

We arrived here hot and hungry having cycled up hill for some distance. The plat du jour tasted great, and the portion size was certainly enough to restore our spirits and strength. We departed feeling very full. Friendly, English speaking, staff. Outside terrace (on street but not noisy). Nice village. Thanks guys. Hope to visit again one day.

After a first lunch here - eating 'Galettes' in a hurry passing through, we found ourselves returning to this cafe restaurant 3 times despite normally avoiding repeat visits to places whilst on holiday. Pleasant terrace overlooking the square / Main Street, not as cute as some of the other options in the village but better food and frequented by a number of locals - a good sign. The service was reasonable, if a little abrupt initially, but the Galettes were really excellent, cooked quickly and just behind the bar where you could watch if you wanted. They were served without delay which meant they were piping hot and the correct mix of crispy around the edge and gooey where there was filling. Good choice of local fillings, generously filled and served with a very small green salad on the side ( a couple of mouthfuls - so if you want real salad order extra eg. The chibois, which is tasty and very good value).Plats du jour also looked good but seemed to sell out fairly quickly - we ate one day at 1315h and they were already gone. Not the sort of place for a long drawn out gastronomic lunch or dinner but very satisfying in between a busy day's activities

On cool days a log fire, cheese fondue and a glass of wine. What could be better. Lunch time salad, omelette, charcuterie and a glass of wine. Perfect lunch. On lovely hot days a drink on the terrace with a tarte myrtilles sauvage. Any which way a perfect destination for a little trip out. The views are spectacular, the staff friendly and for these wanting something more active, fantastic walks. Every photographer's dream. Oh, and don't forget a visit the the fromagerie.

Restaurant la Pierre Chaude

I did not understand the significance of the restaurant name but it refers to a hot stone( the translation of pierre chaude)on which one cooks a selection of meats at our table! They advertise it as smoke and odor free and they were right! We chose a combination of beef, turkey, duck, and veal, which came in very thin slices, for each of us to cook. Along with this came four different flavored mayonnaises: herb, garlic, mustard, and something spicy I did not try. We all agreed we like the herb the best. It also came with a big bowl of steamed potatoes and a sour cream sauce flavored with chives and roquefort cheese. it was a relaxing main course and our waitress who was just delightful stopped by to ask us if the stone needed to be replaced with a hotter one, which we did once. We began this prix fixe meal with three different starters: a duck paté, an assortment of charcuterie(various hams and sausages and a country paté), and a cheese melted on bread served with salad. The meal itself did not come with salad, so I recommend adding one. It was a good balance for a hefty meal. We found the wine fairly priced but after tasting a pitcher of the local red switched to a wonderful burgundy. We have found that the white wines from the region are more drinkable, and so fairly priced compared to back home. For dessert, they had the normal evil French choices, all yummy, with a few using the local liqueur Chartreuse. I had profiteroles and my companions both had tarte tatin, an upside down apple tart. While it did not have a caramelized coating on the apples, which one would normally expect, it was indeed delicious.Definitely a fun meal I would try once. You would need to decide if you would try it a second time, but we watched delighted families with kids having the pierre chaude dish, and it is great for a lingering Sunday dinner which this was. We were there almost three hours and were very happy.

Very average lunch, despite what looked like a lovely atmosphere and a good menu. My daughter had the small burger with chicken. Served on top of a rosti instead of bread I thought was a nice and innovative touch but the flavouring of the chicken was clearly out of a packet. My husband's omelette was very flaccid and grey in colour so not very appetising.Beautiful location and charming decor so a bit of a shame really. Cordialement.Madam,Thank you for your comment, I am unfortunately very surprised of that this but I would like to bring you some answers. Our chicken comes directly from our butcher, thus it is a fresh product and a premises, not taken out of a bag. Our chef, too managing of the restaurant, prepares this chicken he even with some spices "Mexican" way which we like mixing in the guacamole. As for the omelet, maybe would have wanted him to you a little firmer, but when we speak about omelet at our home, she owes be slightly "dribbling" as we say. And for the grey color, it is the preparation house of the mushrooms which we put in our omelets.Really sorry that it did not please you.Cordially.

We came in May 2017, at a time of the week when there really isn't a lot open. Our choices to walk to dinner from the Hotel Beau Site was Le Malissard or nothing. Lucky for us, this restaurant was really very good! We recommend it highly even if there is a lot of competition. The regional fare is especially good, and it's just the right balance of local people and gentle guests that makes everyone very comfortable.

Let's come and enjoy a seasonal, original and tasty cuisine. All our dishes are home-made. There, you will alos discover an outdoor spa

We visted Oreade for a sauna and bath during a rainy day. The sauna is good! Worth a visit... But, the restaurant is not really good. We had steak that was 'over done' (we asked medium rare), salad leaves with starter was really old and not looking fresh and all dishes had balsamico on the plate. Too strong! Small choice - two menu options. Wine, however, was good and worth it's price. Service was friendly.HelloThank you for your comments. We take them into account.Concerning cooking of the meat, do not hesitate to tell us if cooking is not respected, either we will recook it or replace it by a less cooked steak.Actually we have made the choice to use balsamico cream to decorate plates and to add a special taste with acid touch. Objective is to use it when necessary and in quantities that do not “disturb” the main taste of the dish. It is effectively a bit strong and probably does not suit to all palates. All our dishes are home-made, with fresh and seasonal products. In order not to waste food, we cannot offer too much choice of menus. Two menus are offered to clients and they change quite often (one daily). And in case you do not like something, we always try to find something else that will suit you, just do not hesitate to ask us (the same if you have allergy or specific diet).Hope to see you soon in the spa and restaurant in St Pierre de Chartreuse

Wonderful clean farmhouse atmosphere, esp. in sunny weather. Home cooked, simple local fare using ingredients right from the farm and region. The couple who has run this spot for the past 10 years is charming. Great spot for a small family reunion or relaxing time with friends after hiking in the Chartreuse mountains. Reservations ahead are necessary.
