Nipped in here on the last evening of our holiday. Was unsure of the set up and was just about to grandly babble...pour commencer je prends.........when the no nonsense waitress went non non non and told us the set up. Starters were self service and we were to order the main from her. We had very tasty salads and meats from the buffet. Both opted for delicious steak hache for mains. Deserts were also included, my partner went for a tasty lemon tart and I had cheese (not much as I had to swat some flies off the camembert which turned my stomach somewhat),We asked for red wine and were surprised when a litre of a decidedly dubious vintage (none) was plonked down between us. I was driving so had a glass but my partner got well and truly sozzled. And all for 12.50, plus extra for coffee. The place rapidly filled up with lorry drivers and families. Obviously these people know good honest reasonably priced food. Not sure if these restaurants are widespread throughout France but this place was a revelation to us and we enjoyed it very much. The no nonsense approach was refreshing. Try it, it wont break the budget.

On a day visit to Neufchâtel we came across this apparently small bar in the centre of the town. It has a small 'sun terrace' at the rear of the building that proved to be a real sun-trap as we enjoyed a light lunch. The service was pleasant, efficient and polite. Two of us had salads whilst I had a croc-Monsieur with salad. The salads were large, but very enjoyable and the croc was delicious. All in all we had great value for our money at this hidden gem.

We stumbled across this place whilst driving from Calais to Saint-Malo on holiday. We wanted to find somewhere to eat off the autoroute, and this seemed like a great spot. We had a lovely croque monsiuer, with ample salad and amazing mushroom sauce (really really delicious). The rhuburb juice was also incredible.

Attracted from the motorway to Neufchâtel by the smell of ripening cheese, we parked next to the church (well worth a look inside) and walked up the street to this restaurant. It was Sunday lunchtime. We had the €12.50 menu - a salad to start for my wife, and I had some excellent charcuterie, followed respectively by chicken and for my part tender and perfectly cooked steak, frites and a béarnaise sauce served separately rather than drenching the meat as often, sadly, is the case. And then, yes, then, came the cheese. Not your usual parsimonious paper thin slice of something or other, but a plateau of cheeses - 7 in all, left nonchalantly on the table by the industrious and all-knowing lady of the restaurant with the words "servez-vous". We had generous samples of each and the plateau, only slightly diminished, went on to the next lucky diner.A half bottle of excellent wine and water only elevated the bill to just over €40.

We drove through Neuchaftel en Bray hoping to find a restaurant. Le Cantanzaro had a full parking lot so we figured it must be good. It was excellent. Most of the diners were locals who were ordering pizza. I did see someone eating pizza with a French twist (Boudin sausage). We had a full meal with salad, appetizers and pasta. The pasta is made fresh at the restaurant. The Carbonara was served with a raw egg yolk on top as was the carpaccio. There was plenty of outdoor seating and our dog was able to join us. The servers were very patient with our limited French.

It is definitely worth stopping at this restaurant if you like burgers: all ingredients are fresh and tasty, from the bread to the meat. The additional local cheese went very well with it. Otherwise there was a full menu for 15e which may be even less expensive during week days. Nice atmosphere, efficient service with a smile, several regulars, which is always a good sign.

There's not much going on in Neufchatel, and the town is mainly a staging post for trips to the coast or further west. But this pizzaria is fine and all reasonable value. Vin en pichet is around E3.80 per 25cl and drinkable. Expect pizzas for 9.00 Euros and the children's size marguerita at E5.80 (2014 prices). Staff are efficient and pleasant.

We booked to stay here to break our journey. The staff very welcoming and friendly. Food in the restaurant excellent. The rooms are a bit cramped and there is no lift, but ok for one night. The breakfast is a bit frugal and they do not replenish supplies so get there early.
