Where to eat European food in Galway: The Best Restaurants and Bars

April 3, 2020 Rebbecca Marino

Find out what European restaurants to try in Galway. For visitors, the best thing about Galway is that you can walk everywhere. As soon as you arrive, enjoy a walk through the city streets. There, you'll find lively pubs, independent shops and winding cobblestone streets packed with students, artists, writers and craftspeople. You may even hear Gaelic spoken. For a day trip, take a ferry to the island of Inis Mor. You'll return refreshed by the ocean air and Inis Mor's breathtaking scenery. Oh, and be sure to wear sunscreen on the island, no matter how chilly it is. (Just trust us, okay?)

We were a walk in party of 3 at 7:30pm on a Wednesday evening and no problem getting a table. All our food was excellent - sea bass, chicken with Gorgonzola, pizza, tiramisu. Service friendly and speedy without being rushed. Definitely a good decision to try this out and we could be back again tomorrow!

We are so glad we decided to have dinner at this cozy restaurant. We had been walking around Galway checking out our options and decided to eat here on the spur of the moment, and it was a great choice. The staff are friendly and attentive. I had a delicious tagine that the kitchen kindly accommodated my request to add chicken to. My husband had the lamb shank. We also shared a mezze board as a starter (which had excellent hummus and was a generous portion). We'd visit this restaurant again in a heartbeat!

Wonderful meal with a fantastic atmosphere. Very authentic italian food. Desperately wanted to try the Tiramasu, but was far too full! We had salmon slices, as well as Arancini al Ragu, for starters, which were devine! Our mains were Polo alla Valdonstana (chicken breast with ham and sauce), and the Agnolotti di Carne (meat Ravioli....), which were both fantastic! Highly recommend this restaurant.

This place is A MUST eat! When I tell people (mostly Americans) about the amazing and exciting food scene in Ireland, WEST is what I am talking about. A recent 10 day stay at The 12 Hotel had us dining at WEST 3 times; each experience was 5 stars! The wine selection is second to none and the staff are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, but it is the FOOD that completely blows you away. This is the epitome of the NEW IRISH FOOD scene; a stunning combination of traditional Irish flavors and ingredients prepared and executed in the most innovative and delicious ways. Too many people today are still ignorant as to how amazing the food is in Ireland -after Italy, perhaps the best ingredients in the world! Fish caught daily, beef, chicken and lamb from farms minutes away. Most restaurants tell you exactly where your food is coming from and West is no exception. This is FINE dining at a very reasonable price. Romantic ambiance. We cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough... if you are in Galway, it is well worth the 12 minute cab ride to beautiful Barna!Dear Franco,Wow! This means so much to us. Thank you as you have raved about everything we hold dear and are passionate about in West. We have been pioneers of the food scene in Galway since opening twelve years ago and we are honoured to be involved in actively elevating Ireland's reputation as a wonderful food destination too.We, and Ireland Thank You.Very best wishes,Fergus and Team.

This is a lovely location with nice staff. The sandwich menu is excellent and enjoyable. Night times are very quiet and this is a great pity. Galway is not the place for night time sandwiches. Down the road you have Wooza, always full while Dough Bros across the street is full as is Venice. Why??? They do great pizza , you can do that too. Glad you’ve brightened up the place , now change the menu , you’ve a great location and staff. Go take on the competition
