Stopped here, right in the middle of Cluny's main street, for a relax and refresh on a very hot afternoon. Excellent location, very friendly and helpful waitress. Service was prompt and unhurried.Lovely shaded on-street location and relaxing atmosphere. Had we been staying longer in Cluny we'd definitely have gone back for a meal.

Relais d'Ozenay

An attractive old building in an attractive setting, with a surprisingly modern interior that lacked much atmosphere. The notice on the door says open at 7pm, but little happened before 7.30. Think before you drink: the aperitif and wine-by-the-glass prices are quite high enough for what was eeked out as 12cl doses. I wondered about short measures, to be frank. We took the 34 euro menu, with cheese available at an extra 4 euros, with a choice of two starters, two mains and one dessert. The amuse bouche was a curate's egg, with the good part at the bottom and a tasteless albeit fashionable foam on top. The starters were essentially very tasty, but chef is too fond of putting minute quantities of umpteen ingredients into or onto things, notably radishes in razor thin slices, which rather confused the issue. The waiter has an excellent memory, and tells one all the things in every course: each recitation reinforced my opinion that there are too many ingredients in everything. Chef! Please learn that less can easily be more rather than going down the route where more is less. The best part of the meal was undoubtedly the seven hour confit shoulder of lamb that we both enjoyed. The dessert (no choice) was not as per the menu but the so-called tiramisu that another critic has complained about. Notably its crushed biscuit base. It had nothing whatsoever to do with tiramisu, no coffee, no marsala, none of the classic ingredients that appear in its homeland or even in UK supermarkets. I do hope I was not expected to rave about a modish deconstruction of some kind. OK I am raving but in a negative way. Will I be going back? No.

La Calabrese

My wife and I recently had lunch at LaCalabrese in Cluny. It is very convenient to the abbey and a great place for a mid-day meal. We both ordered pizza and, had we known in advance, we probably would have ordered one and shared it rather than having ordered the two that we did. They were large and reasonably priced. The manager indicated that all of the ingredients for the pizzas were imported from Italy. They certainly tasted authentic. I would recommend this restaurant for lunch for anyone heading to the abbey in Cluny.

A place to see. We propose menus with combinations of local flavours and others from further afield, according to the season and your gourmet desires. The vegetarians have not been left out and all is home-made. To be experienced.

It's the kind of restaurant you always hope you'll find in rural France but seldom do. Nothing much to look at on the outside. Inside are plain wooden tables and stone walls hung with pictures by local artists. The menu is on a blackboard with 3 or 4 starters, 3 or 4 main courses (including vegetarian) and a few desserts. The food is delicious with both typical dishes such as bavette (beef) and also a Moroccan influenced mild lamb curry. We were pleasantly amused when we ordered one starter and a voice from the kitchen shouted "c'est fini"! When we asked about fish we were told they couldn't get fish fresh enough, so it wasn't on the menu. Certainly best to book - we arrived soon after 19:00 and it was full by 20:00. The proprietor (she also serves) speaks some English. Since she was the only one serving, service was a little slow but with food like this, who cares? We paid just over EUR 70 for 3 people, 3 courses including a half litre of rosé wine. Credit cards accepted.Thank you. As time goes by (almost 6 years, which means that not only the service is slow in our case), we hope however to have become more efficient while remaining simple and maintaining the quality of our culinary proposal. We still change our menu every 3 weeks and always have vegetarian options.

This is an old school French working man's restaurant. A 4 course meal, wine and coffee included set menu for 12.5 euro. The first course is a serve yourself buffet with cold fish, pate, salad etc. The second course is the menu of the day, no choice, 3rd a cheese plate to pick from, then dessert and coffee. The wine is a large bottle of, red, white or rose, drink what you want. It is a hundred yards from the voie verte bike trail.Service with a smile, good food, no choice but great value. No tax, no tip, wine included.

Le Saint Martin

Reviewed By bargee2016

Chapaize is an attractive little village with about 170 inhabitants. There are two restaurants and a bar selling bio snacks so they are spoilt for choice for eating out on their own doorsteps. There is also a handful of stalls forming a small Sunday market, a group of potters and a couple of galleries, and a church dating from the C9, but that’s pretty much it - no ubiquitous tabac, coiffeuse or pharmacie. As with most such villages I suspect the downside as far as the Chapaiziens and Chapaiziennes are concerned is the large number of tourists who crowd the streets in summer. We added to the crowd, visiting on a hot Sunday for lunch at the restaurant Saint Martin - not to be confused with the church of the same name opposite of course. We did eat here several years ago, and felt it was time to pay another visit. Trusting to the meteo forecast we booked a table on the terrasse, and arrived early enough to bag one in the shady passage to one side. There are no set menus, and the dishes are listed on boards on the wall. As readers of previous reviews will know, my wife loves fish. As I am not so keen she tends to make the most of her chance when we eat out, and here there were several choices; quinoa salad with crab and wasabi mayonnaise or salad with crispy whitebait as starters, and three mains - medaillon of lotte with cream, chorizo and peppers, or omble chevalier with a spicey sauce (which I always think should be sea horse but know is actually the trout-like char), or risotto with cuttlefish ink, squid, Dublin Bay prawns, and cockles. She chose salade croquante friture de la Saône (whitebait), followed by the risotto. She voted her whitebait as probably the best she’d ever had. They were crispy but lightly cooked, retaining the fishy taste so often lost when they are overcooked. She did feel that although the salad was a good salad it would have been greatly improved with a little lemon in the dressing. Her risotto gained top marks, with a great variety of flavours and importantly also of textures.A green pea gaspacho with goats cheese sounded appealing as the sun was so hot, and I had rolled local sourced breast of limousin veal with vegetables as a main. The gaspacho - effectively cold green pea soup in this variant - was fine but unremarkable. The veal was very good indeed, with a handful of lightly cooked vegetables and light jus.Chef/owner Luc Ory himself came to the table to tell us the choice of desserts of the day, and we had a chocolate gateau with raspberries and a deconstructed lemon meringue pie. I would far prefer a really good lemon meringue pie in its original form, but I guess that is not really a very cheffy dish in a restaurant, so deconstructed it has to be.My wife is happy with a light red wine to go with her fish when I’m eating meat, but this time I chose a Viré Clessé vielles vignes from vigneron Jean-Marie Chaland (white of course, as only chardonnay grapes are grown there).Reading the menu choices you can see that although we are in rural Burgundy, the cooking is far more eclectic. Luc Ory may be an alumnus of the Institut Paul Bocuse in Lyon and have Burgundian roots, but here he is not frightened to introduce a wide range of flavours, mostly with great success.Another place for us to come back to.

One worries about restaurants so close to a major attraction but this restaurant proved the exception. Good table across the road from Chateau de Cormatin. Super hot day so decided to order light. Excellent salad followed by excellent hamburger and fries. Super clean bathroom. Great service. Recommend this restaurant for a simple and tasty lunch. I noticed other meals on my way to the bathroom and all food looked great.

Fleur de Lys

Prior to this restaurant being taken over it was a ‘last resort’ place. If all other options in Cormatin were closed, we’d go there. Generally unfriendly and very average food. As it had recently been taken over by a new management we visited it again this week. What a transformation! Welcoming and friendly, the waitresses insisted on speaking English despite me continuing to speak french. The menu is extensive with french and international items plus pizza and pasta dishes. There really is something for pretty much everyone. If you want ‘arty, posh’ food go somewhere else. If you want good food, well cooked, presented nicely and reasonably priced this restaurant is probably the one for you. We will definitely go back, regularly.

La Table de Chapaize

We dined twice here within a few days. First on a Saturday, place packed, staff on top of their jobs, fascinating food with really subtle and skilful flavours, wine to die for and an excellent price to quality ratio.Back we go on Tuesday, place packed, front of house staff on top of their jobs again. We opted for the next menu up the price scale of two. Starters OK but no sense of the subtlety seen on Saturday.. Main course of veal then follows lukewarm with very modest accompaniments likewise lukewarm on a lukewarm plate. Clearly it had been sitting somewhere cooling off for ten minutes or more. We are not in the habit of sending things back but this time we had no choice but to do so. What's more it reappeared just as lukewarm as before and we sent both plates back again. By now any professionally correct kitchen would have recooked a fresh set of food, but, no, the same grub reappears acceptably hot this time. Microwave? Dear oh dear oh dear!!! What on earth was going on? Was the boss cooking on Saturday and his second in command left to blow it on Tuesday?. A free glass of wine each was a nice apology but we were left grievously disappointed. My ratings are an average of the 5/5 I would have given for the Saturday and a charitable 3/5 that ought to be 2/5 for Tuesday. An object lesson in how easy it is to turn customers from enthusiasm to the opposite. Which day will you pick? Good luck!
