It was incorporated as a village in 1834 and as a city in 1891. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 8,365. It lies on the shore of Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the St. Joseph River, about 90 miles (140 km) east-northeast of Chicago. It is the county seat of Berrien County. It is home of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

Lest my rating seem harsh, this is one of our go-to takeaway restaurants in Saint Joseph. Quick, clean, fast, and a change from the bog-standard American-American chains surrounding it--Papa Vino's, Chili's, Dino's Pancake House, that sort of thing. (In fairness, I grew up in San Francisco, which has more than its fair share of Asian hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and a clientele which is used to Chinese cuisine.)We've eaten here a number of times over the years, and a range of dishes: beef-broccoli, moo shu pork, General Tso's Chicken, that sort of thing. And we'll be back many more times!

This is the only Chinese food I like in Southwest Michigan. They are busier at lunch and pretty empty at dinner. Dinner lovers usually do take out. There is no liquor license. The governor's chicken is the best I have had! There are many other Chinese restaurants in the area. I don't like any but this one. Crab Rangoon to die for! Old décor but clean.

Went here with my daughter to enjoy a good meal but it turned out not so good....found a chicken bone in my daughter's meal - did not offer to remake the meal or discount our dinner.....and no apology for the management at time of checkout

4. New Hong Kong Restaurant

The owners stole the name and menu from the original New Hong Kong House Chinese restaurant that has been in this town for many years. They copied everything! Can this be legal?? Even the telephone # is similar. These people are slick and cannot speak English--so they claim. They screwed up our order and could not understand ourt complaint--so they said. They are a rip off, ignorant and should be closed down.
