When 5 South Main opened a few years ago it was a welcome addition to the South Shore's small roster of very good breakfast places. Creative omelettes, giant pancakes and fresh squeezed juice justified the above average prices. It was our go-to place to bring weekend guests. Our two most recent visits (latest one Oct. 14) were disappointing and it seems a change of ownership is behind the decline of food and service. The new menu is but a shadow of its former self. Fewer choices on a pre-printed page (no more blackboard specials) and bitter coffee are features. Service? Under the former owners we were asked half a dozen times how everything was. Now no one asks, but maybe they don't want to hear the answers. After a sub-par experience a few weeks ago we decided to go 'breakfast basic' on our latest visit. Scrambled eggs, sausage and oatmeal. What could go wrong? The scrambled eggs were burned and dried out, as if they were cooked some time before we ordered. The sausages were cut in half lengthwise and placed flat side down, most likely to make it appear that four sausages were there instead of two. However, they were dried out as well. The oatmeal, which used to feature fresh fruit, came with frozen blueberries, which leaked blue coloring throughout the dish. Home fries tasted of freezer burn. The new owners are concentrating on making this a dinner place (no thanks) and in the process have reduced the number of mornings they serve breakfast, cut the number of breakfast selections, introduced frozen ingredients and raised prices. Not a recipe for success, but the reputation forged by the former owners should keep it crowded for a while longer until the clientele catches on. Normally I would write off a bad breakfast to experience but when one is paying $33 for breakfast for two one has the right to expect quality. That used to be the case at 5 South Main. No longer true, and that is too bad given the barren landscape for quality breakfast options in the area.

The avocado toast and quiona salad are two of my favorites. If you like pineapple, give the pineapple basil smoothie a try...tastes like vacation! I'm also a fan of the house blend juice - kale, pineapple and cucumber. The young staff does their best to keep the line moving. Just note that everything is made fresh so expect a little bit of wait, particularly on weekend mornings...but it's worth it.
