Cafe Carleton is to the Greenbrier resort what the Palm Court is to the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Situated across the concourse from Draper's and overlooking the Casino Club, it is open on Friday and Saturday nights with live piano music and show tunes between 7:30 p.m. and midnight. The atmosphere presents an adult, luxurious experience with premium wines and spirits available by the glass. The menu consists of caviar, oysters, cheese plates and charcuterie offerings. It is named after the Greenbrier's interior decorator, Carleton Varney. Jackets are required for gentlemen. And if you prefer denim, make it well-kept denim in a dark shade. And no men's hats or baseball caps are permitted.

Not really a grill. We hoped to find somewhere to eat while staying at overly priced Greenbriar. This was a local pool hall and we felt we might be murdered. We had some fried cheese sticks and a terrible burger & got out of there.

When he purchased the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, in 2009, entrepreneur Jim Justice, now governor of West Virginia, promised to restore America's Resort to its former five-star status. He introduced the Casino Club of the Greenbrier, built an NFL training facility to lure NFL teams, persuaded high-profile professional athletes to join the Greenbrier Sporting Club and build homes on the property, attracted the PGA Tour and launched the Greenbrier Classic, persuaded NBA Hall of Famer and West Virginia legend Jerry West to become a resident and put his name on the elite Prime 44 West steakhouse and added JJ's Sports Lounge to the impressive list of the Greenbrier's dining collection. JJ's is a popular destination after dinner and a stop at the Casino. Located beneath Jerry West's steakhouse, it is a sports bar with many television sets tuned to the day's sports events and a magnificent bar that stretches from here to there. We don't drink so I can't vouch for the beer and wine and cocktails. But I can vouch for the ginger ale, very authentic. And the bar food is exquisite and plentiful. JJ's (I suppose it stands for Jim Justice) is a great place to hang out after a long day of golf or whitewater rafting or falconry or horseback riding or tennis or swimming or even bowling.

You've heard of bar food. Well, the Tree Tops Cafe overlooking the spectacular Outdoor Infinity Swimming Pool at the Greenbrier resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, is famous for its pool food. On a hot day in the mountains, the pool near the Golf Club is a favorite destination for kids. The entire family often camps out for a leisurely poolside picnic. The cafe offers casual full-table or lounge chair service with a view of the Allegheny Mountains. Adults and kids enjoy burgers, sandwiches, salads, ice cream, shakes and smoothies. Service, as you might expect, is impeccable. Waiters and waitresses continually stop by to make sure every need is taken care of.

We're staying nearby at a friend's house and we're hankering for a burger. We asked a local man where to go and he recommended this place. This did not disappoint. The cheeseburger was excellent and the fish and chips were some of the best that we've had--even in comparison with the UK!

Whenever my wife and I visit the Greenbrier, the magnificent resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, we plan for five days because there is so much to do and so many good restaurants. For example, there are two restaurants located at the Golf Club that are named in honor of legendary golfer Sam Snead, who once served as the golf pro emeritus at the Greenbrier. Sam Snead's is a spiffy dinner restaurant while Slammin' Sammy's is the Greenbrier's rendition of a "Sports Bar." It overlooks the iconic Old White golf course, site of the PGA Tour's Greenbrier Classic, features several big screen TVs, billiard tables, shuffleboard, football and other games. It's a relaxed night spot to watch a sporting event or socialize with friends and enjoy a traditional cuisine like burgers, wings, salads, pizza and sandwiches with a huge beer selection. On our visit, we had a classic jumbo shrimp cocktail, cream of mushroom soup, a traditional Caesar salad, Cedar Plank Atlantic salmon roasted in a wood-burning oven with corn, cabbage and bacon and The Slammin' Sammy's Burger, an eight-ounce chuck of Angus beef, tomato, lettuce, Kosher pickle, aged Wisconsin cheddar cheese, bacon and onion jam on a toasted Brioche bun. With house-cut French fries. For dessert, we shared a big slice of fresh strawberry cake and Greenbrier owner and West Virginia governor Jim Justice's chocolate chip cookie sandwich with vanilla ice cream and hot fudge.
