Wuzhen Water Town

Wuzhen, a 1300-year-old water town on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, is a national 5A scenic area and one of China's top ten historical & cultural towns. Located on the Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain in northern Zhejiang Province, it is at the center of the golden triangle consisting of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Suzhou. Wuzhen can be easily accessed through a number of expressways and national highways. In 2001, Wuzhen was named as a candidate for UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage List. At the end of 2006, it was included in the revised List of China's Candidates for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. In 2009, Wuzhen was named as the first PATA eco-tourism destination in Mainland China. The ancient Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows through the town, which is divided by waterways into four areas, Dongzha, Xizha, Nanzha, and Beizha. Since its foundation in 872 A.D., Wuzhen has never changed its name, location, waterways, or way of life. Traditional buildings remain intact today even after hundreds years of weathering.

Xi Zha

I'm rating it V.good, because of the potential, but we visited it unfortunately during a local holiday period. So it was very crowded. In the late afternoon and evening it was very very crowded and busy. However that did not take away from the pretty evening scenes of the lit up riverside buildings. This place consists of a lot of restaurants and small eateries, a few museums and some nice peaceful quiet parks off the river bank. At the western end, near the temple/pagoda? We came upon a beautiful field of lavender coloured flowers. Nice.

If you are into Chinese culture, this is a must visit place. The place is located in between Suzhou and Hangzhou, so it's a little off the beaten path. It is an actual town dating back from 500 BC. People still actually live here. Some of the houses are converted into public exhibits showing ancient wine making, cloth dying (you see some of this in kungfu movies), bed store, etc. Some are exhibits showing the various festivals and ceremonies practiced in China. Make sure you don't accidentally enter a private residence. You can ride a boat to the other end and then walk back. The boatmen even serenades you on the way. Most visitors here are locals from the parts of China, so it may be very crowded during Chinese holidays.

Mao Dun is as famous in China as Shakespeare they tell me!
The locals are very proud of this famous Chinese writer who hails from Wuzhen.
Worth the time to learn about this man and and his works of literature. Most children in China would have read at least 1 of his books.

正如我轻轻的来;
是夕阳中的新娘;
油油的在水底招摇;
不是清泉,是天上虹;
向青草更青处漫溯;
悄悄是别离的笙箫;
正如我悄悄的来;

Feng Zikai Memorial

Reviewed By A_Roade - Province of A Coruna, Spain

Feng Zikai is an important cartoonist of Republican China, little known abroad. The museum is housed in his country home (his Shanghai home also had a museum, now closed). The place is a bit run down and has virtually no visitors, so you can wander about the 1930's house completely undisturbed. The collection of works by Feng is not that great, and the captions are all in Chinese. There is a good selection of books and merchandise at the entrances. This place will be underwhelming for the non-geeks of China culture but it can be a good contrast to the overly commercialised tourist trap that is Wuzhen, main attraction of Tongxiang.

Little Putuo Temple

Tongxiang Museum

Reviewed By PylonPete - Yantai, China

On the face of it a typically decrepit small-town museum. But it contains an amazing collection of Neolithic jade objects and some later pottery but little else. Some English explanation and labels. There's nothing else to do in Tongxiang, but this is well worth a half-hour if you find yourself there.
I'm always surprised in China that so many objects of such age and such quality turn up in the most unlikely of places and they make no fuss about it.
