Rather hard to reach without a driver guide but worth the visit to see these centuries old Unesco sites. Built round or square, these hakka houses are homes to hakka familes of the same family name. Extended families all live together in the past but due to the lack of privacy, many younger folks have moved to the cities to look for work and these houses are usually occupied by the senior family members and young children.
The drive was about 1.5 hours through winding mountainous roads from the Nanjing County train station. We started our journey from Xiamen North Station and it took 30mins by bullet train to Nanjing County. I strongly recommend getting a local guide but not those large group tours as they will take you to visit retail shops to buy souvenirs. The driver guide is a much better option and you can stop whenever and wherever you like.

Do make the effort to see this piece of local architecture and history even as the place gets more and more commercialized.

Simple small rural village near the Tianluokeng cluster. There are private tulous (earth buildings) in the area as well (but not as grand compared to the Yuchang Lou). There's also a small ancestral hall and memorials dedicated to outstanding villagers in the village. A small stream runs inside the village as well. If you want, you can sleep in one of the tulous here.

Don't just visit in the day when day-trippers crowd the toulou and footpaths, stay in a local hotel just five minutes walk from the small market in the morning and enjoy breakfast from the carts or in the small shops selling steaming hot wonton/meat noodles with plenty of fresh vegetables.
The village is quiet and idyllic at this time, the charm of the river and a black goat nibbling grass just amazing for urbanites like us. Buy the sweetest tangerines from the trucks and get a 2 yuan plastic cup of soybean curd from the old lady in the corner before she disappears!
We enjoyed all this after enduring the first day of pushing past, or rather getting pushed by swarms of tourists at the narrow door of the round toulou. The river and water-wheel are picturesque, and even crossing on the broad stones over deep and swift-running water is not a challenge if there weren't so many people.
That said, the fruits, pineapple, passionfruit, bananas being hawked were cheap and fresh but being made to try tea for over an hour by the tea touts (our tour guide for this stretch obviously needed the commission) was unbearably tedious.

This village has 5 tulous in total but it is a good base for exploring the area where you can find other villages with similar tulous. They look similar but each one has some particular feature. I suggest getting a guide or you will not know what you are looking at.
You can even find a place to stay in these tulous, but the rooms are very very basic, yet clean. If you want to have your own bathroom, then this place is definitely not for you. Experiencing the village means that by sleeping there in one of their rooms means you will be dining together and enjoying what small things they have to offer. Strange but true, in these small villages people have gigantic karaoke systems which they turn on in the evening for everyone to enjoy.
Each tulou houses about 100 people... but many rooms are just locked because many people nowadays work in cities. So you will not find as many people as you might think. The villagers earn a small living by selling tea, which they grow just outside the village (there are many tea plantations surrounding the tulous)
I was in this village for 3-4 days painting the tulous and visiting around other places which featured other types of tulou. I enjoyed the painting as well as the interaction with the local people who are very friendly and NOT pushy at all to sell their products. Unlike in other parts of asia where you feel pressure to buy things, here the atmosphere is diffferent. Just take these places as friendly villages where a nice cup of tea really welcomes guests. I cannot speak chinese, apart from the occational word... and yet, I was able to find a way to enjoy what they were offering. This is another reason why I suggest getting a guide so that you can interact more with the people.
For me, this was truly an unforgettable experience... but remember if you decide to go as a tourist, just for visiting, it is one thing... living there for at least 2-3 days will give you a different view - and of course villagers will want to know more about you and welcome you to dine with them.

I liked these tolou more than the Tianluokeng cluster. The winding stone path (don't wear heels like some were!), the mixture of wooden buildings and old rammed earth houses in various states of repair provide a nice lead in to this fine example of a tulou. It is even possible to stay in around the tolou town area, but unfortunately I can't help with details. I went on a week day so the crowd numbers were low. I saw many bus tours there, so that's probably the easiest for English speakers to get there.

Of all the tulous we saw, this was the one of which I formed the least positive impression. That's a shame because this is one of the oldest surviving tulous, dating back to the 14th century. It is also notable as being a rare example of a five-storey tulou. The problem is that it has been turned into one great big flea market with every corner of the courtyard crowded with tea shops, trinket stalls and tobacco shops. You can't get up to the higher levels, so there is nothing to do except stand there and be hassled to buy stuff. We felt like sitting ducks.

The stone dragon flags (石龙旗) were erected some two hundred years ago and they are still standing there despite earthquakes, storms, etc. Many were also refurbished lately by successful
overseas Chinese .
It's definitely worth visiting together with tianluo Keng (田螺坑). Make it a ~ 15 minutes tour and quickly move on to next location.

Well-preserved.
Quite big!
2 mysteries to the place:
1) The ground shakes and bounces when you jump on it.
2) The well on the left brings clean clear water to the tulou while the well on the right provides murky water.
Found out why from the local tour guides.
There are 2 other tulous nearby, go see them too!
