Le Pichet

Whenever I’m missing France, I head Downtown to cozy, casual Le Pichet, near Pike Place Market, for lunch. The ambiance reminds me of the bistros I frequent in Paris; the mostly light fare has always been authentic; and I consider the service to be exemplary. My most recent visit proved to be no exception.I entered close to 1 p.m. on a weekday and was surprised to see so many vacant tables and only a few customers eating at the bar. Usually the place is quite crowded, inside and outside on the sidewalk patio. But I usually come on weekends and during periods when the tourists have hit Seattle in full force. My late September visit resulted in a much quieter atmosphere and even more attentive service than usual. The server, perhaps a owner, greeted me warmly with a French accent, invited me to sit at any table and gave me a menu, water and a description of the daily special (quiche). I could not decide between a baguette with French ham and gruyere and a green salad with hazelnuts so ordered both. These have always been my favorite choices here, and I was not disappointed. The baguette was as good or better than those I have eaten in France and the salad was extremely fresh with a generous helping of nuts. The attentive server ensured that my water glass was always full. When the check came, it had a 20 percent service charge added to the total. Many Seattle restaurants adopted this policy after the minimum wage in the city was raised considerably. Le Pichet, however, has a note on the check to customers about the charge. It invites those, who do not consider the percentage in line with the service received, to ask for it to be removed.

Our large family group (8 adults, 4 children) enjoyed a delightful dinner, around a nice big table in the spacious mezzanine area.Although the menu is limited, it caters to most tastes; likewise, the wine list caters to most tastes and pockets. Most of our dishes were interesting and full of flavour, although the crab 'gazpacho' was a bit disappointing, with the crab overwhelmed by the tomato flavours. The service was quite outstanding – very efficient, friendly and helpful. Although not inexpensive, Loulay offers reasonable value.

Place Pigalle Restaurant and Bar

Place Pigalle has an attractive setting off the main concourse in the Pike Place Market near Pike Street, with a welcoming ambience, comfortable seating arrangements and a beautiful view. The menu is filled with interesting selections made with fresh local ingredients using French and other culinary traditions to provide an amazing array of very interesting dishes. We chose the Duck Breast and Northwest Bouillabaisse and split a Washington Apple and Belgian Endive salad. Guy was our server and he was superb—very professional and helpful—with a good sense of humor. He gave us time to enjoy our meal, helped with our wine selections, which were excellent, attended to our requests and contributed to a most enjoyable evening. My ratings are based on my assessment of how well the personnel do what the owner expects them to do. I rated our experience as outstanding. I’m already thinking about another visit to Place Pigalle to try the Octopus and Country Sausage.

So glad we decided to have breakfast here- it was not cheap - but it was excellent. On a pleasant morning we were able to sit on the terrace and glimpse the world going by. My wife (as always) opted for a cooked breakfast- this time the oeufs brouilles. It was a plate full and she said the scrambled egg was cooked ‘just right’. I couldn’t go past the house made granola with yoghurt and strawberries- perfect. I would definitely have this again. I love the mix of textures and flavours. Excellent espresso coffee with a decorative twist of lemon on my spoon. Friendly and efficient service. Very happy customers.
