Hotel-Restaurant Le Fruitier

Welcome to the Fruitier !Located between the Mont Saint Michel and the D-Day beaches, the hotel-restaurant Le Fruitier welcomes in a contemporary and sophisticated setting. Each of the 48 bedrooms in our hotel was designed and decorated individually to offer guests personalised comfort... And be sure to enjoy our restaurant Le Fruitier and its contemporary take on traditional cuisine made with local ingredients, as well as the hotel’s “bistro”, La Poêle de Gargantua (Gargantua’s Frying Pan).

Unfriendly and rude staff, great food.

We stayed at this hotel yesterday (June 5th) on our way back to Cherbourg. We know the town and have visited before so thought this would be a good choice. Mistake. We arrived early and decided to have a drink in the bar. Many, many local people were served before we were. Eventually a reluctant waitress said "Madame?" in a way that was not encouraging. I ordered in French and some..... time later it arrived, after quite a few local people who arrived after us were served. When we booked into the hotel, the receptionist, who would plainly know that I was British when I spoke French, was, what can only be described, as hostile. She continued speaking in rapid French throughout our conversation, which, luckily, I could understand. I found out the next day that she did speak English. She refused to give us two keys for our room saying only one was needed and pointed at the lift dismissively. As we had a terrible thunderstorm that evening we decided to eat in the hotel. I approached the waiter who was standing at the entrance to the restaurant who waved me away and walked off in the opposite direction. I went to reception to book a table with the receptionist who refused to acknowledge me and continued a long conversation with someone about the storm. We returned to the bar and tried to speak with the same waiter again but he ignored us. In exasperation, I went back to the receptionist and booked the table. Once in the bar again, for a pre-dinner drink we waited and waited to be served whilst other local people came and went and were served. Eventually, the waiter (the same one who had ignored us twice) served me with my drink in a dripping wet glass that had just been washed and not dried. In the restaurant our order was taken by a very pleasant young girl. Unfortunately, the person that served us was the hostile waiter who promptly shouted three times "Burger, burger, burger" when he bought our meals. When I indicated that the burger was for me he plonked my plate and my partner's plate on the table with our wine and water and walked away. It was notable that he served all the other people in the restaurant, who were all locals, with their drinks, pouring out the wine and water as you would expect in a good reasonably priced restaurant. The saving grace of this experience was the food which was excellent, well cooked and seasoned, well presented and delicious. I can only assume that the staff at this hotel are not keen on tourists or the British, I am not sure. I know I won't be staying there again or, unfortunately, eating there despite the excellent meal. Bad service leaves a bad taste.

Comfortable room, super swimming pool. Poor check-in process, no coffee in room, ultra-slow WiFi

Although everything is very stylish and extremely well presented, we felt disappointed. SatNav takes you to a different location nowhere near the property. There was no-one there, the shutters to most rooms were closed, no response to the doorbell. We called the number on the booking form they explained we had to visit a separate hotel Le Fruitier to check-in, where they gave us the key card. We insisted they accompany us to the 'hotel' to show us to our room. None of this is mentioned in the booking process, we were the only guests staying there (there are only 3 rooms), we felt very isolated. The 'hotel' is actually 3 rooms on the 1st floor of the building, the owners' main residence. There is no hotel sign on the building, and as there are no hotel staff on the premises, I wouldn't necessarily describe it as a hotel, it's more of an 'Airbnb' type arrangement. The 'Welcome Tray' in our room consisted of 2 Earl Grey tea bags! No coffee, no milk, no water! WiFi is painfully slow at just 0.42 Mbps (described in the Room Directory as 'High-Flow!). The indoor swimming pool was super, along with the sauna and steam room, but doesn't open until 9.30am, so it's not possible to use it if you like to get up early and go out for the day. After our stay, I read quite a few reviews all mentioning these same issues, so it appears that either the owners don't care, or can't be bothered to change the information/instructions on the booking confirmation process. I expect more from a hotel.

Very warm welcome on arrival. Room a little sparse on decoration, stark perhaps, TV peux petite, and had a bit of a DIY feel to the construction, but bed was comfy, though could use extra pillows. Good shower. Spent evening out eating and viewing town. Breakfast old school French petite dej, but fresh. Nice touch of proper English tea bags. Reasonable pricing. Easy internet log on.

Bed and Breakfast Saultchevreuil
