Will Guest Homestay

Most beautiful place in Ella - highest recommendation

Reviewed By Passenger58138982866

Wills Homestay is an exceptionally beautiful place in Ella. The family has built a little jewel into the mountain here. We were lucky enough to be able to move into the highest room. There was an indescribably beautiful view with a dreamlike sunrise in the morning and the starry night in the evening. Perfectly integrated into the plant world, you have the feeling of living in the jungle. The food is excellent and plentiful. The hosts are very friendly. All in all an unforgettable stay with excellent value for money. We'd love to come back.

Eco Friendly Hotel near the Yala National Park

The secret jewel of Kataragama/Yala

Reviewed By PetyaLazarova

We had a lot of hosts in Sri Lanka but this one was the best one. The secret jewel of Kataragama/Yala. If you like nature, good quality, extraordinary service this is the right place. The accommodation are beautiful modern houses right beside a lake. The two brothers Chamit and Dulaj organized everything for us, showed the surrounding nature and many animals, cooked a delicious candlelight dinnerin in the middle of the jungle , organized snacks for the safari and even drove us to the next accommodation. Thank you very much and we would love to come back, without these two guys this place would not be the same. Petya and Thomas from Germany

The Rock Face Guesthouse

A friendly small guesthouse with a great view and nearby the main street, to all the nice restaurants. The guesthouse also provides very good Sri Lankan food and has great hospitality for a good price.

You get what you pay for

Very clean, breakfast was good. The hot water not so good and toilet seat damaged. Also it is up a steep hill so no good if lots of luggage. Our van driver managed to drive within 50 yds to locked gate which we got through at the side. We took just enough clothes for the 2 nights. We were shown a very nice room on the 2nd floor which looked new but it was up 2 flights of stairs that had no handrails and we were worried about that. So took a standard room on the same floor. At £9 a night can't complain. Lady owner did our washing 400lkr per kilo - paid 200 in Kandy? It was a bit of a climb but road led straight to the middle of town for dinner. Staff were very nice. Views are good.

Adjust your expectations

The caretaker was very friendly, welcoming and engaging. We were welcomed with tea on the patio overlooking the mountains and nine arch bridge which was spectacular. From a location perspective it was fantastic albeit very challenging to get to especially with luggage. Getting there was not easy so much so our driver had to park at the top of the hill and we had to take a tuk tuk down with our luggage because it was raining and the hill was too slick for him to navigate in the van. Then there was another climb up to the guest house so if you have a lot of luggage or heavy items know it’s a fairly long windy hill from the upper road down and a short steep climb up to the guest house. While the views are amazing the accommodations could use quite a bit of improvement. The rooms were dirty. The one I had was at the end of a small communal hallway with a plywood door to enter and a key lock which didn’t feel that secure. Same with the bathroom door. Termites had eaten through part of the bathroom door trim, there were gaps around all the windows and doors, dead bugs in all the window sills/crevices and holes in the mosquito nets. If you are staying on the main level the caretaker, and what I assumed were family and/or friends, were staying in the other rooms and they congregate in the communal areas in the evenings watching videos on their phones. They also wake up early and with the walls being thin you will hear conversations and videos bright and early. My friend was staying in the large room above the gathering area and the stairs were slippery and looked partially rotted in some areas and there was no lighting so her son fell a handful of times coming down the steps. Their bathroom did not have walls going all the way up to the ceiling so there was not a lot of privacy. While the room was spacious and has a couch and two chairs they were very worn and torn and the curtains were very filthy and stained. Same issue with gaps all around their windows and doors and holes in mosquito nets. If you are backpacking in the area and are planning to be out and about most of the time and just need a place to store your luggage and crash without breaking the bank then some might not mind the accommodations but the photos of the actual rooms don’t really reflect the current condition of the property. The caretaker was very hospitable so this review isn’t meant to reflect poorly on him but rather the owner who would greatly benefit from improving the accommodations. Just know going in that you pay for what you get at this place.

Madushanka Resort Ella

Great place, lovely host, amazing breakfast

Reviewed By NetherlandsLot

After messing up our bookings, the family that runs Madushanka Resort were kind enough to put us up. They gave us a huge, very clean room, with an amazing view. Morning time the guesthouse serves an amazing breakfast that combines continental (a big omelet and toast and jam) with Sri Lankan influences (a lovely pancake with coconut filling and roti). We are thankful to have come across this friendly family and regretted having to leave. Would recommend to anyone.

Dolape Villa

A very nice stay

Reviewed By ricordatiilgiacchett

This villa is a very good place to enjoy the beautiful nature of the Hill Country. It's around 15 to 20 minutes away from Ella but there are buses. They have different types of rooms, from the budget to the suite and the location is very nice, with a super view on mountains and waterfall. The food is delicious and for reasonable price and they guys are very kind and always ready to help. If you are coming in this area this place worth the stay!

Pleasant View Ella

Nice property, friendly owner but....

Reviewed By halfnote2005

None of the rooms has A/C or a fan. It was not an issue as we travelled in April and the outside temperature was pleasant. We would have liked to leave our window open but there is no net on the window to keep the creepy crawlies out. There is however a net over the bed for the mosquitos. The owners were friendly, generous and helpful but communication was not easy as their command of English is rather limited. Travelling with a local driver made all the difference. Be aware that parking can be an issue and that pillows are hard.

Heina Nature Resort - Eco Home & Yala Safari

Heina Nature Resort which is located just outside the Yala National Park, is an eco home surrounded by beautiful lakes, rivers, the jungle and archeological sites, nested in two acre land at Yala Kataragama which is a small village located in the finest edge of the lower southern corner of the island, is one of the most visited, sacred pilgrimage sites for Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Veddah communities of Sri Lanka, and also the closest point of entry to the main entrance of Yala National Park. The resort is about 240 km from Colombo, 38 km from the Mattala Rajapakshe International Airport, 10 minutes walk to historic Kataragama temple and only 15 minutes drive from Yala National Park main entrance (Yala Block 1, Yala Block 4 and Yala Block 5) Heina, which has two exclusively designed chalets with all modern luxury amenities in a rustic style adjoining Goyagala lake, gives the illusion of being cut off from the civilization due to its unique location.
