Makeda

Karamara

Karamara is a cozy little place with a welcoming Ethiopian decor - table settings, art, etc. The staff is friendly, and the woman who helped me the first time I went spoke English as well as French. The place is small, so it might fill up fast. If you are coming with friends, check to see if you can make a reservation. I don't know if you can, but you might want to if you can.Since I can't eat gluten due to my celiac disease, I had to forgo the very tasty-looking injera, which contains wheat flour as well as teff (I asked). However, their vegetarian combo is all gluten-free and all vegan, as well as being savory, delicately spiced, flavorful, and filling. I found it very satisfying, even when eaten with a fork and a spoon rather than injera. :) You ge a few different stews - greens and onions, cabbage and carrots and potato, lentils, and one other which I have sadly forgotten, although they were all good.I have only ever eaten here by myself, but I saw larger parties of diners sharing combinations, beers, and apérififs who seemed to be having a great time, so I would say that this a good place to come with your friends for a delicious meal in a friendly setting. They're open late, too.

La Maison Berbere

Near Tours train station.

My wife and I stumbled across this Morrocan restaurant after we got back from touring the Chateaus in Loire Valley, France. The Chateaus are absolutley beautiful! We stayed at the Grand Hotel right by the train stop in Tours, France. We were tired after touring so we wanted to eat near the hotel. We walked around a bit in the area and decided to eat at La Maison Berbere. It is located right off the street and did not look too impressive from the outside. And the inside looked like a Morrocan garage sale. BUT..., the food was excellent!!. We were so surprised that we had to submit this restaurant to Tripadvisor. It was not listed before our submission. We highly recommend eating there for a unique Morrocan experience. I had the lamb in a tajine and it was probably the 2nd best meal I had on our 10 day trip to France. The only better meal was at Mugaritz in San Sebastian, Spain (a top 10 restaurant in the world). If you are near the Tours train stop, try La Maison Berbere. Just be patient...there was only 1 waiter the day we went. Hopefully your experience with the food will be as good as ours!
