A nice local hotel, if you get the right room

Reviewed By katydidlynne

We stayed at this hotel for our wedding. We booked two rooms- 205 (executive suite) and 509/8 (presidential suite). 205 was beautiful, open, lots of light, warm colors in the room, AC was robust. It looked exactly like the photo online. 509 was disappointing- it seems they renovated it more recently than 205, but everything was gray. Everything. We were pretty confused when we checked in to 509, because they also gave us the keys to 508 (a basic room). Apparently you get two separate rooms when you book- the Presidential suite and a basic room, and we ended up with an empty room that no one used. Had we known ahead of time we could've arranged a friend to stay with us. They seemed like they wanted a blue accent wall, but then the entire wall was covered up by an unmovable gray curtain? The couch still had the store tags attached to it and the fireplace was crammed in a corner and not very usable. The AC unit had leaked at some point and they didn't fix the water damage, so we couldn't close the shutters in the living area. The AC in the Presidential Suite was not as good as in the Executive suite. They have one unit for each room, instead of the two for one space in the Executive , and despite having the units running since we got in, it still took 12h to cool the room 5 degrees, and we couldn't sleep. Thankfully we had the Executive suite still so we slept down there that night. After 24 hours it was fine to sleep in the Presidential suite. There were aspects of the Presidential suite that were nice, like the reading lights on the bed, outlets on the desk, and being able to close the bedroom door if you had guests over. The bathroom was very nicely redone, but if you're looking for a tub, there is only a shower. (The Executive suite had a shower/tub combo.) We paid $250 a night for the Executive suite and $500 a night for the Presidential suite. In our opinion, the Presidential suite was not worth it. The Junior suite was more our style and at half the price. I would only consider the Presidential suite if you get someone to split it with you and they stay in the surprise extra room.

Nothing special- overpriced - parking is annoying

We booked a night at this hotel for one reason: my grandfather had a fairly serious medical procedure scheduled for the following day, and we wanted to be very close to the medical facility where the procedure was taking place ( UMass Hospital Worcester) so that hopefully we would be less stressed out in the morning and so we'd avoid any potential traffic, because we live fairly far away from Worcester, in Connecticut. I'm used to staying at a Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Comfort Inn/Comfort Suites, Homewood Suites, Hyatt Place (once), La Quinta (although not in a long time), Fairfield Inn and Suites - well, I think you get the idea. All of these hotels are usually relatively reasonably priced and they all have free continental breakfast at all times. These hotels are essentially in an entirely different category of accommodation, and it would be unfair to 100% directly compare my previous excellent stays at Hampton Inns or Fairfield Inns to my stay at this Hilton Garden Inn. I've always known that Hilton Garden hotels have no free breakfast and I've always avoided them mostly for this single reason. This was the first exception, because apparently there were a bunch of graduations happening, and all of the better choices for hotels were booked up when I was ready to make my reservation. I was so disappointed when I found out that the Homewood Suites was booked - it was the highest-rated hotel in Worcester on Tripadvisor, was cheaper, had complimentary breakfast, and I just knew that Homewood Suites hotels were excellent places to stay - I believe I stayed at one last year, and it was an amazing value. So, I'm not going to be too hard on this hotel for the things that I already expected prior to arriving. I knew there was no breakfast, I knew I was paying too much considering how much cheaper the Homewood Suites was, etc. etc... I will only focus on a few unexpected negative "surprises" or just simply things that were worse than expected. For starters, the hotel is starting to show its age - that's just a simple fact. No big deal, considering the price I paid, I'd say it's worth mentioning. Also, we got some wings from the Uno's Restaurant that is connected to the hotel the night we arrived - they were barely edible lol - petrified hahaha. I just laughed it off though. We also got entrees and those were pretty good. Parking was in a garage across the street, which was rough for my grandparents. I will say, the app checkout was nice.

Not the Marriott I’m used to….

Reviewed By Navigate115419

I booked a 1BR suite so that my family and I could attend a concert at the DCU Center. The location was good and the property was quiet. Upon arrival I confirmed with the front desk that my room was feather free and had some extra bedding. I was assured it was. I go to lay down and found feather pillows. I visit the desk and reiterated that I needed foam pillows and some extra bedding. We go t grab some dinner and come back….still no foam pillows and the bedding is nowhere to be found. Go back to the front desk after the night shift took over and finally got bedding and foam pillows. It took a tremendous amount of effort to get what I needed. When we arrived to our floor the stink of weed was so bad I got nauseous. The smell lingered for our entire stay. The room was ok but the bathroom was a train wreck! The shower curtain looks like someone had a fight with it. Holes, wrinkles and generally tired. The bathtub handle fell off in my hand when I tried to turn the water on and the drain was plugged with years worth of hair and mold. The tub must have had a hole because it had a big almost color matched sticker on it and you could feel a dip in the surface of the tub. Finally the breakfast was different….eggs were literally burned and sausages were cold and dry. Bagels and other pastries were stale and there was no cereal without added sugar. If you like applejacks and Fruit Loops you were good. If I were a Marriott property manager I would be embarrassed to claim this place.

Horrible stay

Reviewed By genevievem20202020

Very disappointed. This was by far the dirtiest Hampton that I have ever seen. I went to the front desk and told the manager there was mold in the shower and she told me she was aware and that they were having a hard time getting rid of it. I told her the rest of the room was so dusty and so dirty.. The staff was very rude and unprofessional. Refused to give me a receipt. The whole experience was horrendous. I will never ever be back and I will be sure every parent at my son's college is aware of the low standards in this hotel. No surprise, it is Under New Management. Last year this hotel was very nice and clean. Not anymore. Stay in Auburn or Westborough. They are both clean.

Of course this is a new hotel.... so very clean and updated. Staff very friendly. Plenty of parking in garage below the hotel. But make sure you get a parking pass from the front desk or you'll be paying the regular garage rates (which can be $$ when there is an event happening at the DCU center. Plenty of restaurants and bars to go to close by (drive to Shrewsbury St). Bar is open till 9:30. Breakfast is expensive for a "European" style ($17)....there are a few diners in the area. Only complaint is the view from the inner rooms......roof mechanical stuff.

Newly renovated. A great place to stay in Worcester. Rooms are artfully decorated and the bedding very comfortable. Also, conveniently located near WPI and other locations downtown. But I can’t say enough about the staff, especially Shawna and Kwadwo at the front desk. The staff are super friendly and attentive, and always go out of their way to respond to any request. I stay here frequently because of them. Be sure to let Maria take care of you in the bistro and Victoria in the bar! No complaints at all!

Better than an underpass

Reviewed By PhilipK392

I stayed at this miserable Holiday Inn Express for three unpleasant nights only because I had to (every other motel in Worcester was fully booked because of college graduations). Unfortunately, I found out why this was the only one with available rooms. A good place to start was when I checked in. As I was doing the paperwork, my daughter asked to use the lobby restroom, which required the key card to open the door. The manager, Dawn, (remember that name) told her she couldn't use it until we were fully checked in and received our "official" key card. I'll not mention every indignity, every act of discourtesy, every single negative example of what made this an unspeakable destination - but here are a few highlights. I asked for a 1-hour check-out extension time on the last day, of my stay - the place had emptied out, almost no one left. Dawn replied with a terse "No"; of course, I asked why and she told me I'd had a discounted rate that didn't "warrant a late check-out" - that was it, discussion over. Here's a bit more...during the course of my stay, I'd asked the desk for change for a five. Answer: "No". (they don't have cash.). Next, the shower broke (the handle had gotten stuck and wouldn't turn off (this time they, however upset by my inconvenient weekend request, were willing to fix it - eventually). The place is spartan, virtually amenity-free. But what really sets it apart is the icy attitude of the staff led by our leading lady, Dawn. I believe she doesn't like herself, her life, her guests and least of all, her employer (note to you, Dawn: get another job, ideally not in a customer-service position). The bottom line is if you're down to only two options: 1) to camp out under an overpass or 2) to stay at the Worcester Holiday Inn Express, I think you should choose the Holiday Inn - and that is a very close call.
